Rumor: Aliens: CM Dev Spills Beans on Production Woes

An anonymous Redditor claims to have the inside scoop on why Colonial Marines came out half-baked.

First of all, you need to take everything you're about to read with a grain of salt. With that in mind, an anonymous poster on Reddit - who claims to have been involved with Aliens: Colonial Marines for the last year and a half of its development - has posted a long and rather detailed account of the seemingly endless bad fortune the title encountered during its ridiculously long development cycle. We have no way of verifying the integrity of these claims, and the poster notes right off the bat that they must keep their identity secret to avoid legal action. However, the detailed account does elevate the story above what you might expect to see from a disgruntled fan trying to spread nonsense.

"Pecan (the internal codename for ACM) has a pretty long history. SEGA, GBX and 20th Century FOX came to an agreement to produce an Aliens game around 6 years ago, after which SEGA almost immediately announced it, long before Pecan had even started production," the poster explains. "The game has been in active development in the past, only to be shelved in favor of another project (Borderlands, Duke, etc), and each time it was resumed it would undergo a major content overhaul."

He or she goes on to detail how Colonial Marines was constantly put on the back burner in favor of other projects. According to the poster, the story campaign was only 85% finished with just four months left before the game had to ship, and the story - which absolutely butchers Aliens canon - was still in shambles.

"Campaign didn't make much sense, the boss fights weren't implemented, PS3 was way over memory, etcetcetc. [Gearbox] was pretty unhappy with [TimeGate]'s work, and some of Campaign maps were just completely redesigned from scratch. There were some last minute feature requests, most notably female marines, and the general consensus among [Gearbox] devs was that there was no way this game was going to be good by ship. There just wasn't enough time."

But the game did ship, and as review scores across the board have shown, the game suffered because of it. You can read the full, much longer rundown on the original post [http://www.reddit.com/r/LV426/comments/18ewf4/a_lot_of_you_are_rightfully_upset_at_the_final/].

Again, it's impossible to tell whether or not this story is legit or not, but the explanation does certainly seem to fit with how the final product turned out. What do you think? Is this a sad love letter to disappointed fans, or a particularly creative forum troll trying to smear one or more of the companies involved?

Have to appreciate the irony (if it's true) that one of the last minute features added to a game with 6 years of dev. time was putting in female characters in a series that is known for its female characters.

Without verification I take it with a pinch of salt, but considering the end product, I don't think it seems all that far fetched. The game clearly suffered like Duke Nukem by having a long development cycle as well as multiple teams working on it at different points.

God knows how they made it so bad when Alien Vs Predator 2 (released around 12 bloody years ago) did such a good job of bringing the series to life.

gearbox hasn't learned shit apparently.
Could you clarify on this?
He's probably referring to Duke Nukem Forever and how much ACM's tale has in common with it, if the reddit post is actually true.
That what i thought. Maybe someone should inform him that gearbox didn't develop DNF and its failure can not be really attributed to them. This would be the first opportunity for gearbox to learn this lesson for themselves as far as I'm aware. If the article proves true.

If this is true, it sheds some light on why ACM turned out the way it did. We've already had claims that TimeGate were responsible for 80% of the production and Sega was quick to come out saying that they didn't outsource anything. Regardless of what happened, though I won't be buying it simply because all the these production woes don't excuse poor quality. Especially when they're asking full price.

It doesn't seem that authentic to me. If it was to be a single developers apology to fans then it's 90% stuff that was already known or suspected and it confirmed absolutely everything that the gaming community suspected. Also it's pretty short on top of not shedding anything new. He could of told people things that only a Gear Box team member would know to try and give some credibility. Also it's kind of rushed with him saying at the end "I got to go soon so ask away" if a real Gear Box employee was going to risk getting fired and sued then he'd of at least made sure he got absolutely everything he wanted to say out. (also I wouldn't of asked for questions on the offchance a question made me accidentally somehow reveal my identity)

He does go into detail about the PS3 version being over memory, boss battles not being implemented until less than 4 months was left on the title, etc. Those are certainly things only someone involved with the project would know.

This sounds exactly like what happened with X-Men Destiny at Silicon Knights. In that case it was Activision who called their bluff and forced them to panic and ship a hot mess after they wasted the dev time. At least with this we got Borderlands 2 + a crap game. With Silicon Knights they burned the time on Eternal Darkness 2, so we just got crap.

Yeah it's 90% stuff we know though. I would of expected some more details personally it just doesn't pass the smell test for me. It's a fake, a phoney, we've all been duped Mike!

Right now, I'm starting to think that Gearbox are only at their best with a Borderlands game, because almost any other game they've released aren't half good or half-baked.

After reading that thread I realised we could have had an awesome Aliens game if they hadn't decided to work on BL2 and instead just properly finish and polish ACM.

but no they had to put that franchise on the back burner for a personal project and they also outsourced to two other studios...

Yeah I'm not really trusting GBX much any more now seeing as how I thought BL2 was mediocre for me after finishing the story and now learning we could have had a decent Aliens game.

But hey everyone's putting all their money onto Bioshock Infinite, I'm sure that will never ever fail in anyone's eyes.

Everyone probably already saw this, since this massive letdown is just... sour
But I'll just leave this here

If this was a troll, it wouldn't be a very amusing one even for the creator so I would think this is legit.

Like I said in another thread, it's games that start with a B. Borderlands. Brothers In Arms. Balf Life: Bopposing Force.
