DayZ Creator: "A Console Port is Almost Certain"

Dean "Rocket" Hall tells us how the standalone DayZ title will squash hacking, and teases the future of the title on consoles.

During my last day at GDC, I had the chance to chat with DayZ creator Dean "Rocket" Hall just before he departed San Francisco to prepare for a trip to Mt. Everest. The day after Hall spoke at his own panel that focused on development of the DayZ mod, he shared with me some details regarding the development of the upcoming DayZ standalone title, as well as the future of the brand.

When I approached the topic of DayZ coming to consoles, Hall admitted that despite a lot of speculation, nobody had really posed the question to him in a straightforward manner. After I took the opportunity to do so, he revealed that while a console version of the title isn't currently in development, there's nothing keeping it from happening in the future.

"Certainly I think if we don't, for want of a better word 'fuck up,' the PC release then I would say a console port is almost certain," Hall revealed. "I know a lot of people get really hot and bothered about it. Like, I'm not a console gamer, I'm a PC gamer, but I don't think it necessarily has to hurt things."

But what consoles would be likely to see a DayZ title in the future? At the moment it seems like the PS4 may be the leading candidate. "It appears to be the kind of game that Sony are interested in, I think we just have to wait and see," he continued. "We've talked and met with Sony, and they're very - you know, they're obviously interested."

When it comes to the DayZ mod, hacking is a major issue. For the standalone release, the development team wanted to make sure that the same security issues that plague the mod didn't pop up again. "It's very difficult to be able to turn around and say 'We have solved hacking' because of the nature of it and even what [the hackers] are trying to do, it's a creative thing," Hall explains.

However, the project's progress towards launch has already been pushed back six months in order to tackle the hacking issues, and the changes that have been made are far-reaching. Unlike in the DayZ mod, each players' computer won't receive updates for each action that takes place on server. "There's kind of now a bubble around the player," he notes. "So the player only receives updates that are relevant to them."

This change is designed to do two things: It cuts down on the bandwidth usage and lag that is so prevalent on many DayZ servers, and also prevents cheaters from being able to create tools that show where other players are on the huge, open map.

There is currently no firm release date for the standalone version of DayZ, though Hall and his team are continuing to release developer video blogs [http://dayzdev.tumblr.com/] to showcase their progress towards an eventual launch.

Not sure if April Fools joke...

OT: That would be fantastic news if I didn't think the next console cycle was going to fall flat on it's face right out of the gate. Still thinking about switching to PC gaming exclusively.

You just know that somewhere out there, some charming person is rending their garments in rage at the thought of those dirty console players being allowed to join in the fun.

Good, I must admit I was a bit sceptical about it, but good.

DayZ is always something I've been interested in if it came to console, so I'm hoping that they don't in their own words 'fuck up' and therefore it allows it to come to consoles soon after.

Sounds good to me. I'm a PC gamer but the more people who get to join in the fun, the better! Here's hoping it has cross-platform play, if possible.

I'm a console gamer. Bought Arma2 on PC to play Dayz, but my computer wasn't up to it, so I'd love the experience on a console. If they made it on PS4, which I wasn't previously considering, that could sway me in its favour. I'm sure lots of people would also want to buy it. No need to limit yourself to PC when it's a game that would fit in well with other console games.

To be fair, this turn of events with no impact on the PC gaming community is terrible news!

Fun?

I take it you've never played DayZ.
Sure I have. In fact, I played for a length of time that bordered on unhealthy.

Contacts with other players were some of the most thrilling experiences I've had in games. The fact that dying is a big deal - or at least it is if you've accumulated a lot of good stuff, that players can kill you quickly and easily, that many will want to do so, that even the ones who don't will see you as a potential threat, all combined to make for some very tense moments. So yeah, fun.

Granted, being sniped a minute after you spawn is not so fun.

Just thought I would point that out. :D

I hope the standalone version of DayZ is a hit, the PC version is blast to play and seeing it go more mainstream would be fantastic.

This is good news for me. As someone who can't really afford to get the software to run PC games on my Mac, I'd appreciate a console port. Beware fellow survivors, ALL OF YOUR BAKED BEANS ARE MINE!

Well I'd definitely play on my xbox if I could. My laptop is on the bottom range of being able to play DayZ, so a more solid platform to play on would be greatly appreciated.

DayPS3.

Old joke that barely works. But hell: I'm lonely, so clearly there is justice.

I'm with most other folk here. I don't mind this so long as porting it doesnt effect the production of the PC standalone.

I hope it burns. DayZ SA started out as a indie development but now it's turned into the soulless corporate machine.

On a second note: Never trust what Rocket says. He cannot stick to things he says.

That's awfully negative of you. The game still has it's indie roots in mind, it just has the power of Bohemia Interactive behind it to make it better than it was. I for one am happy that Rocket will be able to profit off of this phenomena that he helped create.

There's reason to be negative. What DayZ SA has become cannot be define yet as they are trying to hide most of the features becuase "it's still in development" and what is said cannot be trusted because of the potential bias. The limited access was given to the staff, mods, and a few selected guests like FRANKIEonPC who is renowned for his possible use of hacks.

Sorry, I did once wish that Rocket would gain success but not anymore. I was going to buy it but now I'm hesitant to even buy it if it comes to 75% off in Steam.

I'm still not sure if this is an april fool's joke or not... I thought it was obvious and it made me laugh, but people seem to take it seriously, despite that he went on a trip to mount everest and the "hot and bothered." >_>
