Bethesda Not Ready to Talk About Fallout 4

A new project from Bethesda Game Studios wasn't in the cards at E3, and it may not come to light for a while yet.

Fans of radioactive wasteland violence were disappointed at this year's E3 when Bethesda didn't reveal a new project from their primary developer, Bethesda Game Studios. Elder Scrolls fans have had their fair share of hype with the upcoming Elder Scrolls Online but there hasn't been much news on the Fallout front in some time, leading many to wonder if a big reveal was coming at the event. Pete Hines, vice president of Bethesda's parent company ZeniMax, offered his two cents to say that fans' expectations for a Fallout announcement are probably unrealistic.

"We are not into annual franchises," Hines says. "We have never done that, I don't see that it is something that we are doing anytime soon ... But these are big games that take a long time and folks need to understand that we have a very certain way of going about things." He added that ZeniMax won't be releasing any information about the new project until the developers themselves give the green light. "Todd [Howard] will let me know when he is ready and I will tell everyone else what he is up to."

It's only been four months since Bethesda Game Studios released Dragonborn on PC, so it's fair to give them some more time to crank out something new. There aren't even whispers about the studio's current project, so expect it to stay under wraps until it's good and ready.

Were people actually expecting a Fallout 4 announcement? Shit, I still feel like Fallout 3 just came out.

EDIT: Shiiiiit, never mind. I was thinking of Farcry. Never mind~ Guess that goes to show how many of any of those games I've ever played, lol.

"We are not into annual franchises," Hines says.

Excellent. This is the sort of thing I want to hear.

Maybe Bethesda's new project is a Skyrim expansion? That would be fine by me! And certainly more welcome than another - *yawn* - Fallout title.

I'd rather have one 'Skyrim' or 'Fallout 3' quality game every few years than the 'COD' or such annually.

Dragonborn was the last I'm pretty sure.

OT:

Bethesda better be in the process of getting an engine that doesn't run like Mirelurk spunk for their next games. I'm fucking tired of the Gamebryo engine and it being awful.

KILL YOURSELF!

Its ok Bethesda, you don't need talk about it, although hinting that it is being worked on in any shape or form would be swell! <3

Annual franchises? What an incredibly poorly done dig at E.A. The last Fallout game that Bethesda actually made was FIVE years ago, FIVE. Hines is in really poor form here, and frankly I think it's because a Fallout announcement was planned for E3 but either he or someone else pulled the plug and left a lot of Pressos wanting, leading too the rumor mill getting kicked into high gear, and he's just bent about it.

Ehhhh, I'd rather Fallout 4 would be made by Obsidian to be honest. New Vegas was just so much better than 3 in all respects. Obsidian can do characters, story and open worlds. Bethesda drunkenly stumbles around the first two then hopes the open world can carry the game entirely. Which for some people it can but it gets boring for me after the first 50 Claw Door "puzzles"

They both seem to be in competition to see who can have the most hilarious bugs though. Bethesda has backwards flying dragons in Skyrim, Obsidian has Radscorpions clipping into the ground and random game crashes to add to the excitement >.>

I'm not particularly waiting for a new Fallout, i'll buy it when one comes out but i'm not going to be absolutely hyped about it. It'll come out when it's ready. Rushing huge open world games out the door DA2 style is just begging for an unplayable buggy mess.

I'd be happy if it were built using a stable game engine for once.

Fallout 4 has to be set in Australia. No If's, And's or But's.

Skyrim is not a Fallout game.

That'd be Fallout 3 he's talking about.

And five years isn't that crazy. There were 5 years and 8 months between Oblivion and Skyrim. Hell, there were 4 years and 9 months between the release of Oblivion and the announcement of Skyrim.

Especially when you consider that Fallout: New Vegas was released less than 3 years ago, even if it was made by another Studio.

Seeing as Fallout 3 was released in October 2008 it actually hasn't been 5 years yet. It's been 4 years and 8 months actually. So if they announce it within the coming month they'd have been faster than they were with Skyrim.

Even if they don't, let them take their time. Bethesda games are supposed to be vast and open, I'd rather wait another year for more of that than get a smaller game.

Why would anyone be surprised about this? Oblivion was released in 2006, and Skyrim showed up in 2011! Thats a space of 5 years! A painful wait for us dedicated fans, I agree, but I'm not entirely surprised to learn that we are looking at a 2014 or 2015 release of Fallout 4. Hopefully they are making it even more grand, detailed and enjoyable than any of their games before. When it comes to these two franchises by this studio, I am willing to wait X3.

Lets not forget that inbetween Fallout 3 and their future game, there was Skyrim. Games like these aren't stamped out in a day (thankfully).

It's been 5 years since GTA IV too, and we are only now getting GTA V. I know, time seems to fly when you play great games!

Doesn't really bother me all that much, there are still lodes of things I have yet to explore in both fallout 3 and New Vegas.

Even if that means another year with elder scrolls fanboys trying to piss us (the glorious fallout master race) off. But those guys can go in to a lake and stay there until they're head stop reaching the surface for all I care

That is a shame, I would love to see a really big expansion like Shivering Isles. Really, Skyrim deserves a couple of major expansions like that.
Agreed about the Gamebryo engine, though. It was actually much better in Skyrim than it has been in their previous games, but even so, it's time to find a better engine.

The soonest we will see a Fallout 4 is holiday season 2014. It may actually come out in 2015. I am sure they have completed preproduction and are onto full time development already, but these games take several years to complete. My money is on 2015.

While Skyrim is obviously a game in a different series it is a very similar game to Fallout, 3d open world RPG. It does take Bethesda studios about 4 to 5 years, traditionally, for them to complete such a game. They have likely been working on Fallout 4 since 2012, with only smaller teams left to work on the DLC for Skyrim. Now that the DLC is over with they are likely focusing all their effort on Fallout 4.
As I have stated previously, I suspect we won't be seeing Fallout 4 until the end of 2015.

PRobably want to wait until they have some gameplay before announcing it. Good plan, though I hope I like this fallout more then the others I've played (3 and a bit of vegas).
