PS4 Architect Hopes Sony's Legacy Will Be As Lasting As Nintendo's

Mark Cerny's looking forward to another decade or two of Sony achievement.

Nintendo's core values, PS4 lead architect Mark Cerny believes, have only been strengthened by the design team's longevity; the core group has been working together for over 30 years. "Well, we on the PlayStation side of the business have only about 20 years together now," Cerny told a Gamelab audience in Spain, "but I'm really looking forward to the next decade or two with Shu [Yoshida], Andy [House] and the other amazing talents of Sony Computer Entertainment." Cerny's been working with the PlayStation in its many iterations for some time, which is why he was able to persuade Sony to put him in charge of the PS4's development; all, he says, part of Shuhei Yoshida' "master plan", to put a software expert in charge and run the project like a game director.

"The three muskateers are back," Cerny went on to say, referring to Sony's appointment of Andrew House and Yoshida to senior positions, while Cerny led the PS4 development project. "One of the small results of that - but huge for me," he said, "was that it provided a further boost to the engagement ... with game developers around the world." Cerny hopes that this core team of "amazing" people will help shape Sony's core values, becoming as integral to the company as Nintendo's team has become to Nintendo.

Last time we saw Mark Cerny, he was chewing the fat with Jimmy Fallon over on Late Night [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/125219-PS4-Gets-Round-Of-Late-Night-Applause-For-Used-Game-Policies]. "[The PS4] is the most powerful video game console ever made," Cerny said at the time, and by the sound of it Cerny's looking forward to the day when he - and the Sony team - top that achievement with something even better.

Really I can see Sony lasting as long as Nintendo has in the market as both companies have contributed greatly to gaming and how the gaming market is with their mascots and how they've managed to compete so well against each other.

Here's to hoping the PS4 can become the next PS2. ^.^

I was going to say, Playstation ALREADY has a legacy like Nintendo, it was the PS1/2 (they blur together in my mind, that's how smooth the transition was). Not dissing Nintendo here, but I think what he really wanted to say was, "I hope we'll be as good as we used to be." He just didn't want to sound narcissistic.

It's nice, if really weird, to have a Sony that seems to be so developer friendly. Putting a software engineer in charge of, you know, a games platform, is the sort of thinking that should really be obvious but somehow isn't nowadays. I don't think anyone can deny the effectiveness of giving Miyamoto huge amounts of responsibility at Nintendo.

Im a xbox fan, love the 360. But, in my opinion, PS2 was the greatest console ever. Just the amount of quality games and ip on it. GT, GTA, Silent Hill, Resident Evil, Wipeout and many, many more. Amazing console.

Dont think any future console could live up to PS2, especially when looking at exclusive titles alone, but i really hope so. Either way, Sony has the legacy just with the PS1 and PS2.

I second that. In my opinion, things are looking up. Sony's supporting indies and supposedly they've made the console easy to develop for and we could see some cool games this gen. The console even looks like an upgraded ps2

Sony and Nintendo are the two console makers I see contributing to gaming at large with their work. Even their console exclusives set the bar for gaming as a whole.

No if only they could run a profit on their consoles like Nintendo does.
PS3's have apparently started to break even now and they made profits on the PS1 and the PS2 just fine. Sadly Sony made a lot of mistakes with the PS3, especially at launch, but it looks like they've learned from that.

First thing I said about the PS4 when I saw it was that it looked like they glued 2 PS2 slims together. XD

Agreed. They've already made a huge legacy for themselves because both the PS1 and PS2 sold the most units in their respective generations. Plus they popularized the use of CDs for their consoles (Saturn tried, but Saturn was a failure and the Dreamcast is considered a 6th generation console)

I know that he is referring to the video game side of things, but Sony is nearly 50 years older than Nintendo. They seem to have a pretty lasting legacy already.

Not really.
Nintendo is actually 57 years older than Sony.

Nintendo was founded September 23, 1889, Sony on May 7, 1946.

Actually Nintendo have been around since the 1890's, Sony is a Johnny Come Lately that was founded in 1946.

Interesting. I would've said they already had a legacy as good as Nintendo's, especially with the PS2.

I like this attitude coming from an executive. Much better than Microsoft's "Fuck you or get the fuck out!" approach.

Interesting you should say that, Sony is rumoured to be looking at $25-ish profit (gaf truthfact!) from every PS4 sold at launch, owing to the fact that they're using a bought in AMD chipset, standard 2.5in hard drives but mostly because of a pre-existing disc format (PS2 and 3 having carried the burden of DVD and Blu Ray respectively).

Which is good for Sony, they seem to have been very sensible with their speccing of the PS4, doubly so against Microsoft's drive to cut every corner to the absolute maximum, which is short sighted at best and several billion dollars burnt at worst. Of course that could be a load of balls...

Alternatively they're making a very small loss and buying a game mitigates that, either way Sony isn't in anything like as deep with the PS4 as it was with the 3 and 2.

Mmm...On one hand you have PS2 which speaks for itself as most arguably the greatest console ever but on the other, you have the countless Nintendo franchises and characters, each with a long and distinguished history.

Hardware wise, Sony has the Legacy.
Software wise, they can never hope for their inhouse games to so much as touch Nintendos.
IMO

As people have pointed out, the PS2 is a pretty impressive legacy. I actually like the PS3, but I won't deny they made mistakes with it. Here's to hoping the PS4 has the same impact as the PS2! I'll admit that I have a soft spot for Sony over Microsoft due to my PS2 nostalgia, so it's good to see them garner a lot of good will as of late. They seem to have a much better attitude towards developers and consumers (I'm not naive enough to think they wouldn't screw us over if they could though, they are a business. They've just got the sense not to do anything too stupid), so yeah, I hope they're around for a while longer. I can't imagine how terrible it would be if Microsoft had no big competitor.

No no no, DON'T have a legacy like Nintendo for the love of god, that's just a bad omen. Sony have already proved their shit with PS1, PS2 and PS3.

They all have their legacy.

Positive:
Nintendo: Characters and Series
Sony: Aesthetic Design and media compatibility
Microsoft: Online Features and Online Gameplay

Negative:
Nintendo: Re-releases, gimmicks, casualization
Sony: Rushed Console Development, Bad Network Infrastructure, backwards compatibility issues
Microsoft: Corporate manhandling, hardware issues, contribution to the DLC problem, backwards compatibility issues

What noone in comments mentioned, is that same guys been working on the project for 20 years, and that is great. they know it liek the back of their hands and if anything needs altering they already know how to do it. you already got a team that is the biggest experts on your console. and they are doing very well too so the "old and arrogant" does not apply.

And yes they already got a legacy set out for them. if anything this Xbox debacle will put them in history books to come.

That being said, i dont want them to go the way Nintendo went.....
