Insomniac Games Unveils New "When Worlds Collide" Teaser

Yesterday a mysterious picture bearing the phrase "When Worlds Collide" hit the 'net. Today a new image joins it, and things are slowly starting to come into focus.

Sony's official PlayStation Twitter account and its Facebook account both posted a picture yesterday [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/125826-Sony-Teases-Mysterious-When-Worlds-Collide-Image] that read simply "When Worlds Collide" above an image of a star's light cresting over what appears to be a planet, moon or some other celestial body. At the time all we had to go on was speculation and the timing of the teaser image, but today things look a bit different.

This morning the official Insomniac Games Twitter account posted another image, which appears to be a sequel of sorts to the first teaser. The new picture can be found embedded at right, and as you can see it offers a few additional useful details. As you can see, that light wasn't coming from a star, but is instead being generated by some kind of portal. The celestial body seems to have been removed for this shot, giving us a full view of the portal, and the words "Heroes Return" has been added to the existing text.

Most intriguing however, is that this latest teaser comes from Insomniac Games. A few of our readers guessed that this might be a coy way to announce a Jak & Daxter/Ratchet & Clank crossover title, and given Insomniac's involvement, the amount of time since we last saw a proper sequel from either franchise, and the apparently interstellar theme, that guess seems more and more likely to be a realistic explanation of whatever Sony and Insomniac are slowly revealing here.

Of course, that's still speculation. We won't really know what this game is going to be until Sony or Insomniac opt to lay all their cards on the table. Just as soon as that happens, expect us to bring you all the necessary details. Stay tuned.

(And yes, I'm as bummed as you are that this isn't a game based on the exploits of Powerman 5000. I bet they have all kinds of rad adventures.)

Well, the prediction by some that it was Innsomniac based, and potentially involving franchises melding together again seems to be slightly true. I'd love to see more Ratchet and Clank, especially more Jak and Daxter.

It'll be interesting if it's going to be a Sony exclusive. Then Insomniac will have broken off, made Fuse, made a Microsoft exclusive and then gone straight back to making a Sony exclusive. Heck I think it would be one of the first times a company would be simulataneously making a console exclusive for Microsoft and Sony.

Maybe it'll be a Vita game? That might make more sense. Or not exclusive, but then why did Sony announce it?

Unless we're going to see a new teaser image from Naughty Dog in a few days. In that case it might be some sort of All-Stars thing

Well that ring in the picture certainly looks like the precursor gate thing from the Jak & Daxter series, plus given the history of Insomniac and Naughty Dog referencing each other I'd say a cross over game is at least plausible. Still I'd fine with just a new Rachet & Clank in the main series.

It looks like a precursor portal used in the Jak & Daxter games.

And if it was tweeted by Insomiac, makers of Ratchet & Clank, this can only mean one thing.

Half Life 3 confirmed Ratchet and Jak crossover confirmed.

I'm always right.

Spyro?!?
Remember the portals used in the game to travel from a world to another? Sony or Insomniacs may have bought back the rights, which seems unlikely considering Spyro's involvement with Skylanders, own by Activision... but I'm giving it a shot, mostly based on the portal and the purple.
Which brings me to the "cross over" part of the speculation... Crash Bandicoot?
It wouldn't be the first time that these 2 are linked... remember Purple and Orange on the GBA?
I really don't know about Jax & Daxter / Ratchet & Clank... I mean "heroes return"... implies the comeback of something that hasn't been seen in a while...
Jax didn't get a game in a while, but Ratchet never left.
Plus it's not the first time that there is a crossover... does Playstation Heroes counts?
Given that Insomniac is behind it and the fact that Ratchet never left... I don't know why they would make it sound like a comeback.
Anyway... I'll sure keep an eye on this!

Yeah im going to throw my lot in with the Jak & Daxter/Ratchet & Clank crowd.

Its the useage of "heroes return" that clinches it for me, as its an implication that its an existing Isomniac/Sony franchise, and how many of those are there?

My serious prediction might be right!? :D

If I'm right, by god I really want it. Hell, I'd be fine with just R&C but combined with J&D? That would just be the best.

Hm, since it's Insomniac it might be something to do with Ratchet and Clank, which leads me to believe that it could be the Lombaxes are returning.

I'm still hoping for that thing I said. Anything else would be a disappointment except, you know. That.

Truthfully, if Naughty Dog basically gave Insomniac the J&D IP for cheap because of their close rivalry, and since we know Naughty Dog isn't ever coming back to J&D because Uncharted and TLOU prints money for them, this makes more and more sense.

I only have one reservation about this. Insomniac stated a while ago that they weren't ever making a single player game again. Everything they've done lately has had a single player option, but was made for co-op/multi-player first. All4One, Full Frontal Assault, Fuse, and I'm pretty sure Sunset Overdrive will follow the same strategy.

Basically if this is All4One with another IP thrown in to try and spice things up, consider me unimpressed. Give me a single player experience, or don't bother Insomniac.

It's intriguing I'll give it that, but it's not like Insomniac has been particularly up to snuff this generation.

Let's hope that Insomniac goes back to making good single player games instead of mediocre or bad multiplayer games that can be single player. I'm a huge Ratchet and Clank fan, second favorite series only behind Fallout, and I loved all the games up till All 4 One. Not saying it was bad, but it wasn't great. Then Full Frontal Assualt disappointed me. But if it's a R&C and J&D crossover that doesn't involve the Move then I'm even happier.

Activision owns Spyro now, as Insomniac had to leave the franchise when they teamed up with Sony since Universal Interactive Studios owned the rights to the game. Same thing that happened to Crash Bandicoot, although Naughty Dog has said that they had run out of ideas for Crash Bandicoot and didn't wanna run the series dry.

I honestly find that they work best when making just single player games because A Crack in Time was great, and if they had actually ended the series on that note it would have been a good one.

I just think that it's going be a "Ratchet & Clank" sequel rather then a Ratchet/Jak crossover.
Thinking how 'Crack in Time' finished, 'When Worlds Collide' plays into the idea. And Insomniac have been lathering on the R&C stuff on twitter recently.

If it does turn out to be a crossover, let's hope that it'll be better than that other crossover game;

Insomniac made my GOTY 2012.
However I didn't enjoy much of the Ratchet & Clank stuff this gen and the first 2 Resistance games are admittedly flawed gems. The third is brilliant though.

OT: Could be cool but at this point there's really not a whole bunch to talk about.

Edit: Fixed image

Apparently Naughty Dog tried to make a new Jak and Daxter game before working on TLOU and wanted to take the franchise in new directions. They were even pondering a dark reboot (...as if they forgot Jak 2 happened) that involved a more humanoid Jak and a mute, more animalistic Daxter. There were even unreleased concept art for various new designs. They ultimately canceled all of them because they knew the fans would flip their shit because it wouldn't feel like the Jak and Daxter we all would love. As much as I love the franchise, I'm glad they axed that plan. I think you underestimate the fanbase though, considering this was one of Sony's most beloved franchises 10 years ago and continues to have a strong following. A new PS3 or next-gen Jak and Daxter game, especially one made by Naughty Dog after the disaster of Lost Frontier, would sell like hotcakes. Sony and Naughty Dog know this, though ND is waiting to see if/when they can.

OT: So help me Mr. Price, if this new Ratchet game turns out to be more multiplayer shenanigans, then I quit. I bought A4O and FFA new, expecting at least their solo play can be salvaged. NOPE! A4O was dull and drawn out (environments looked pretty though), and FFA's 4th mission was poorly scaled and nearly impossible to complete alone. I'm not asking for ACIT level of "blow my fucking mind", but all I ask is a fun solo adventure with my favourite lombax and robot duo that can kill about 10 hours or so with jumpy-shooty action.

Though if this is a crossover with Jak and Ratchet (I mean a GOOD one), my body is not quite ready.

Even Doc is excited for a new Ratchet game.

[HEADING=1]WHOA, WHOA, WHOA! HOLD THE PHONE. I HAVE SOME BREAKING NEWS[/HEADING]

Playstation just put out a trailer for the new Ratchet and Clank game.

It's called Ratchet & Clank: Into The Nexus.

Guess it's the not the crossover we were hoping for, but it looks like Insomiac is finally returning to it's single player focus.

My body is ready.

Looks like it's a new Ratchet and Clank game,

http://www.ign.com/articles/2013/07/11/traditional-ratchet-clank-is-back-with-into-the-nexus?utm_campaign=fbposts&utm_source=facebook

Seems they're going back to the roots of the franchise. Personally, for me, the Ratchet and Clank games were slowly going stale and started to lose some of the heart of the originals. A Crack in Time was good, but a bit average and didn't really seem all that polished, and the other two multiplayer games were just sort of there. This one looks to aim to recapture some of the flare of the original, which is a good thing in my opinion. We'll have to wait and see what they come up with.
