Pacific Rim Beaten by Adam Sandler at Box Office

Guillermo Del Toro's tale of giant monster mayhem came in third place in American cinemas on its opening weekend.

If <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/escape-to-the-movies/7705-Pacific-Rim>Pacific Rim seems like a no-brainer, it's because it is. A movie about giant mecha rocket punching giant monsters is probably the best idea to come out of Hollywood since the advent of the lightsaber. That being the case, mainstream America has once again proven that it thinks somewhat differently from geek America. Pacific Rim underperformed on its opening weekend, being beaten at the American box office by Despicable Me 2 and <a href=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WWaLxFIVX1s>Grown Ups 2.

Now there are some important asterisks to pin on to this news. Firstly, while it perhaps disappointed, it didn't flop. It managed to bring in $38.3 million in the United States and $91.3 million worldwide, putting it well on track to match or even exceed totals earned by films like Rise of the Planet of the Apes, World War Z and Prometheus, which earned between $300 and $400 million. Likewise, Pacific Rim has currently only opened in about fifty percent of global movie-going markets, giving it a lot of room for further profitability.

That being the case, you still can't help but feel some twinge of sickness to think that, in this day and age, people would rather line up to see a sequel to a mediocre Adam Sandler film as opposed to a movie where giant robots beat skyscraper-sized monsters to death. If you needed proof that this is a world without justice, look no further. Better yet, stop looking for justice and go see Pacific Rim. The future of monster versus mecha movies may depend on it.

Last night my GF checked and PR was in 3rd being beaten by DM2 and WWZ.

Hell, GU2 looks so bad, my GF won't see it, and she liked the first one.

That makes very, very sad. You there! It's your fault! Go see Pacific Rim to try and rectify the issue. It's fun.

Alternatively, anyone else think we should send a Jaeger after Adam Sandler and see who's laughing then?

This also grinds my gears America! I can understand despicable me having a larger audience base being a family friendly movie but grown ups was described by one reviewer as making "ow my balls" look like a viable future hollywood project. Go to your room and think about that...

Oh boy oh boy, I'll take your word for it and go see it right away!

What's this now? Release date for Finland is 2nd of August? Well never fucking mind then!

WHAT.

This makes me sad. I won't deny that Pacific Rim had plenty of problems - overall I was a bit disappointed by it if I'm honest - but the Hong Kong battle alone is worth the price of admission. The only big summer blockbuster this year that's an original IP and it's beaten by goddamn Grown Ups 2?

If the sequel does happen, I think Gipsy Danger should casually step on Adam Sandler at some point.

But... to watch it I'd have to go outside...

I'm still looking forward to watch it and I guess this is mainly because the mainstream didn't know about this enough. Being beaten by Despicable Me 2 isn't really a shame but Grown Ups 2? Really??? Did they buy their own tickets like some music companies bought their own cds?

But on the other hand, how can they not release it at the same time everywhere? Even in huge markets like Germany we have to wait one week. While I don't need to see it right away, I fear some people may resort to watching those horrible pirate versions.

And waiting one week is basically nothing. They are waiting until Semptember 12th in Greece! Is this some kind of joke? By then everyone will have pirated it.

Err... It was bound to happen thou, you're talking about Grown ups 2 which had, for some reason, a very decent if not good box office, and IS a family movie, therefore it WILL inherently bring more tickets (thus "family movie") I don't really see how people are surprised about this.

I mean, we're on a gaming site here, I thought most knew that sequels tend to bring in more money than new IPs, quality notwithstanding.

Well sadly that is how the market works, quality mecha movies will still have a limited nerd circle where as something utterly retarded will not have a limited audience.

Nowhere in Cornwall within walking distance of me is showing Pacific Rim. Not in St.Austell and not in Truro.

So there's literally no way for me but to wait for the DVD.

Perhaps people are just fed up of big things being smashed. It's not like they haven't seen it done to death already this year.

Sooooooo... How about all that "geek being the new mainstream" malarkey?

Well, it hasn't opened over here yet, although it runs really close to Elysium and I'm finding it really hard to choose between the two.

Fun fact: Metacritic tells me Pacific Rim has a 65/100 average. Grown Ups 2 got 20/100.

I'm in the exact same boat. Release date for Japan is August 13th. By the time this rolls around I would have forgotten about it.

Ok, I totally don't understand the whole release date thing. For instance, I live in one of those small Balkan countries, we got the movie on the 11th, a day before the US release. On the other hand, major countries with far more people and money get it a week or more later. Why? Maybe the opening revenue would have been better if the release was simultaneous...

Also, I can't help but wonder how many people will just download a cam version of the movie instead of waiting for an arbitrarily delayed release date...

It saddens me that a shitty sequel to a shitty Adam Sandler movie is doing better than Pacific Rim, even though i find it ubnlikely that i will watch any of them. It´s just a bit sad when Pacific Rim seems to be made by people that care and Grown Ups 2 looks to be the exact opposite.

People really should demand more from their comedys.

That's the thing though, Pacific Rim is pretty family-friendly. There's none of that filthy sex-stuff, potty mouths are kept in check and the violence is mostly confined to the fantastical big monster battles. As noted all over the place the tone of the film is generally so much lighter than we've been getting in most of our blockbusters. It should be fine to be enjoyed by most youngsters without problem - maybe one of the problems is that people don't know this.

I can see the argument for it perhaps being considered quite niche and therefore not getting the broader attention, but I still find that a surprising notion given how utterly dominated the box office is these days by superheroes and other traditionally nerdy topics.

Although I haven't seen the Adam Sandler film... I did see Pacific Rim - due to friends wanting to go see it.

I thought it was pretty god damn awful if I'm honest. Cheesy lines, stereotypical casting, unnecessary stupid visual jokes.

I know people will probably rage at me for saying that but it really wasn't my cup of tea at all. Summarising the film is as simple as 'Smashy smashy' - so I think it should take its box office position as a win for such a poor film.

I heard it grossed $1.5 mil. in South Korea, that uplifts me at least :p. Unless the figures were in Won ._.

Heat was pretty good. Yeah it was basically a female buddy cop film but I couldn't stop laughing throughout it.

And DM2 wasn't as heartwarming as the first one but it made up for it in it's comedy.
