Sony: PS3 Hasn't "Peaked" in Some Markets

Sony Computer Entertainment VP Feral Gara thinks the immediate future looks good for the PS3.

Back when the PlayStaton 3 first launched it had some strong opponents to contend with. There was, of course, the Xbox 360 and Nintendo's Wii. That said, one of its strongest competitors was arguably the PlayStation 2. Vastly cheaper and loaded with an already massive library of quality games, the PS2 would continue selling for years following the PS3's release and was still actively in production <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/121372-Sony-Ceases-PlayStation-2-Production-Worldwide>until 2013. With more than a decade of solid sales it holds the title of the best selling console in history. Now, with the PS4 on the horizon, some may be wondering if we'll see a similarly stretched out life for the PS3.

"In terms of the life of the PS3, I think it's there for some time to come," said Feral Gara, VP of Sony Computer Entertainment commenting on the subject. "I think it's got an amazing line-up of games this year which is really healthy." That said, Gara has doubts as to whether the PS3 will be able to maintain the same sort of long life that its predecessor managed. "I would expect it to fade a little more quickly in the UK which is a highly networked country with a huge taste in new tech," said Gara. Gamers can likely expect a similarly speedy replacement of the PS3 in other tech hungry nations. That said, he still believes the PS3 will live on in countries with less connectivity where the console "hasn't even necessarily peaked." Regardless of whether the PS3 remains an industry force for years to come, Gara's picture of the immediate future is a bright one. "We've got big games announced for this year, and you will be hearing from publishers that lots more of their big, big titles are coming to PS3."

I don't think it will last. Though that's just me since there isn't anything I really want on it compared to the PS2 which has more variety, and even games that many consider the greatest of all for being unique.

Unless someone wants a PS4 at or near launch its probably the best time ever to get a PS3, its cheap, almost its entire back catalogue is cheap and PS+ is a great service for not much money. The same is true for the 360 somewhat too.

Most of the big games coming out will have either PS3 or 360 releases in the short term at least.

personally I'm hoping this Gaikai streaming thing that, unless I'm very much mistaken, will allow PS4s to stream PS3 games (provided you have the disc I think) will extend to PS1 and 2 games as well, wishful thinking? probably yeah, but it is possible right?

the ability to pull of such a feat using completly diffrent hardware archititure would be mindblowing to be sure

I believe that EA still put out a PS2 version of FIFA every year. Admittedly, it's probably the same as the year before with updated teams, but still, it's a new game for the PS2.

I'm not sure what to think. A part of me thinks that the support will be there. Obviously everyone isn't going to go out and grab the new consoles at first. Many have adopted the "Wait and see" approach on that matter. So they're going to stick with their system for abit longer before making the plunge into the new gen. This is mainly because the lack of backwards compatibility. On that matter Sony plans to release their system next year for NA (at first?). So it's possible we'll still see some releases before things shift completely to the new gen. For instance I think Watch Dogs is still coming out on PS3 and PS4. So maybe it's not going to be a sudden stop on the flow. But with time you can expect them to expect us to purchase the new console.

Well, with the way the government and BT are just plain not bothering with getting everywhere hooked up with fiber-optic access, I don't think we're as tech hungry as Sony thinks we are.

It's great certain places are getting 100 down, but others are still on dial up. The UK, as far as technological infrastructure is concerned, is an utter shambles.

Oh, I totally think Sony will actively support this. They said a while ago that they had a decade-long plan for PS3 support. Because of this, I predicted new consoles wouldn't be released until 2015, followed by a couple of years of active releases.

Now I figure there will be a couple of years of releases (until 2015) and then they'll just sell it at a super cheap price until 2017, with additional years if there's additional support.

Sony is DEFINITELY going to be still making tons of money off of this thing.

The same is true for the 360.

yes, opretty much this. the consoles always go for years after next generation comes out and nothing new about it. and we should nto forget the... "less advanced" markets. for example the Sega Mega Drive (Sega Genesis for you americans) is still being manufactured in Brazil. they ordered the manudfacture rights and sell them to the latin america market. with us playing PS4 they may as well be playing PS3s there.

We are an embarrassment on the global stage as far as internet is concerned. The fact that our economy, despite taking a severe downturn in recent years, is still miles ahead of most other countries. And considering our two biggest exports (financial services and the creative industry) are heavily reliant on digital technology, you'd think we'd have made a better effort.

And I don't doubt at all that, compared to India, we'll really buy into a new console generation. I'm just contesting the reason for what he said. We'll buy consoles because even our lower classes have enough disposable income to afford one eventually. I'm not sure about India, but I wouldn't suspect the same story to be true there.

the only real embarrassment as far as internet is concerned is USA. Half the country still runs on Dialup according to some sources, something that became obsolete 20 years ago elsewhere.
if you notice most of those countries are quite small, thus needing little infrastructure. That still is not really the point. People willing to buy new technology is not something caused by internet coverage.

Monopolies wilfully set up all over the place so that the companies can drive prices up, even basic pay-as-you-go phone plans are horrifically expensive, and you don't even get 100% coverage everywhere. I honestly wish there would be more penalties for companies that do this, if they're going to serve a country in telecoms, they need to get coverage and speed right, or get out of the game.

Internet coverage and speed plays a lot into it, since these devices are so heavily reliant on internet connectivity for them to work properly. I wouldn't downplay it's significance.

Haha, when you put it like that, it makes no sense. I'm just too used to living in a country where, while utterly useless at moving forward internet speed wise, at least what we have is regulated by a government body, thus prices are kept down. Of course, if you even hint at any form of government intervention in any form in America, you're lynched as a dirty, filthy socialist who hates freedom (while not exactly to that effect, I have had the term "socialist" thrown at me, as if it's a bad thing, because of my nationality before now).

But as you say, the lawmakers here are in the pockets of the mega-corporations, nothing will ever change here. The corruption is dug in too deep.
