I was lucky and never spent that much time or money in arcades - I grew up in a small town where the arcade was shit and outdated. I did get some use out of Ridge Racer though. Oh man, the trip to Japan in my early twenties and losing myself in multi-floored arcades there. Fuck yeah.

I once blew 20 dollars in an hour playing Dungeons and Dragons: Tower of Doom. Before I got decent at it and managed to later on get to the last boss on only $.75. Still, those were great days.

I remember playing a Wayne Gretzky-hockey game that charged you for every period you played. I lost a looooot of money on that one...

Yeah, I too remember walking into an arcade, buying a stand-up console for thousands of dollars, and then cramming quarters into it for months and months.

You owned the arcade cabinet? Didn't it have a DIP switch to enable free play mode? Or were the quarters just to add to the experience?

Nothing made me happier in my youth than 5 dollars worth or quarters and a few hours with nothing better to do. This was back when arcade machines actually only cost 25 cents to play and it was a rare few that were 50 cents. Both of the local arcades were shut down at point. One has reopened but it's mostly all ticket dispensing type stuff and that just depresses me. However my friend's daughter loves that place so I still have fun there.

I feel like the only difference between then and now is that the arcade machines now support the use of credit cards and PayPal. I remember wishing I could just swipe my bank card at the machine rather than walking to the opposite end of the shopping center where my local arcade was to get cash out from the ATM. I guess they do say to be careful what you wish for...

I remember playing waaaay too much Galaga back in the day. Of course, when I was feeling especially cheap, during the demo screen I'd just wobble the stick back and forth. Gives you a few seconds of free play.
