Star Wars Rebels Will Go to "Dark Places"

Executive producer Simon Kinger says Star Wars Rebels will deal with serious issues while still maintaining a "swashbuckling" tone.

While <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/131253-Star-Wars-Episode-VII-To-Be-a-Send-Off-For-the-Original-Cast>recent rumors regarding the nature of Star Wars: Episode VII have left some fans <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/the-big-picture/8682-Stars-Worn>a bit worried about the direction J.J. Abrams plans to take with the film, the franchise's latest foray into television is arguably looking pretty solid. Speaking recently about Disney's planned animated series Star Wars Rebels, executive producer Simon Kinberg offered up some fresh details to further wet the appetite of eager fans.

"The world we're creating is an Imperial world," said Kinberg. "You're seeing the impact of the Empire, of stormtroopers around the galaxy, abusing and oppressing people. Thematically and politically, it goes to some dark places." Despite this, viewers can still expect some of the "swashbucking" tone that define much of the original trilogy and especially, according to Kinberg, A New Hope. This is a sentiment that the show's creators have expressed <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/126389-Star-Wars-Rebels-Returns-to-Classic-Trilogy-Roots>in the past. That said, Kinberg put forward that not every beat in Rebels will be drawn from the classic films.

"We will have characters from all the different parts of the [Star Wars] universe," he said. To help with this, Rebels will employ the services of "resident Star Wars genius" Pablo Hidalgo who will wield an encyclopedic knowledge of the franchise to help inject bits and pieces of established lore to flesh out the show. "He will say there's a cool cantina in this comic book from 1994, or a cool creature that not all of us know. He will bring that stuff to us." The end result, he hopes, will be a series that gives fans a perspective on the original trilogy that shows off new elements of Star Wars while retaining the classic film feel. "[I want to start when the rebellion] was just four guys in a room," he said. "That's a big part of the fun of [Rebels], the little back-room dealings, the first time you see it's possible to stand up to the Empire." Rebels is set to begin airing in fall 2014.

You know, we are talking about a series who's first movie had the mass genocide of billions. Dark and gritty kind is Star Wars thing.

That's not the same thing as "dark and gritty", all mass-deaths and brutality was implied and cut-away... it's a space opera with adventure. Force unleashed tried to make it gritty but that was just awful

Good news: Pablo Hidalgo is probably the most knowledgeable person with regards to Star Wars errata and trivia other than Leeland Chee. Having him going on a rampage and throwing EU references all over the show sounds like a great idea.

Bad News: Dave Filoni is still the executive producer for this series. And most of Pablo's contributions will probably be shoved off the page after the second draft.

I didn't see any mention of grit, dark and swashbuckling was what I read. Did we read the same article? I mean Star Wars is pretty "dark," in particular Empire Strikes Back, but it's dark in a fantasy kind of way. It's dark because fun characters we care about are being placed into tense situations. It's dark in the kind of way most all operas tend to be, space or otherwise.

Their need to toss the word around is certainly worrying, though...

Ya that trailer really sold the tension... I presume he means dark as in "No night light for you Jimmy! But why master Palpatine why?!"
Bet that will really shake people in their jammies, oh I can just hear them terrifying cries cut through the darkest night asking for mommy.

Dark places? On Disney XD?

How are they going to pull that off?
Same way Tron: Uprising did probably (what happened to that show, btw Disney?).

And that's pretty much what I've taken away from this: Disney is making a Tron: Uprising show - only in the Star Wars universe. Sounds kinda cool, I'll take a look after a few episodes are done to see if it's any good or just another Clone Wars.

...I feel like I either misread something or, the video in the article was unrelated. I read 'Star Wars Rebels' in both but the tone of the commercial was more along the lines of, "There's going to be totally gnarly stuff in this show, you should be stoked dudes!" rather than anything something darker. When was the last time Disney allowed something to go dark and gritty again? It wasn't Gargoyles was it, because that was nearly 15 - 20 years ago...if that WAS the last thing they did dark than...well I hope they still have it in em'.

Just a teaser they released a ways back. Images of the show aren't too plentiful so I tossed it in there. And yeah, Gargoyeles is the last thing I can think of... God Gargoyles was awesome.

Yeah....I'm not buying anything remotely "dark" or "interesting" with that narrator's voice. No offense to the man, but that was definitely "kewl and radical kids to young teens show presenter".

Tron: Uprising was canceled unfortunately.

OT: Well, seeing how previous shows with a more serious bent has gone (Beware the Batman, Tron: Uprising, etc.), this will either suck or be really good and be canceled halfway through.

I get your vitriol for the trend, but you're jumping the gun a bit, there. Wait for the inevitable game tie-in to come out, then repost your comment.

OT: I'm not particularly interested, really. The last Star Wars related thing I kinda liked was the first Force Unleashed, because it wasn't as badly written as the prequels and managed to set up a prequel story that didn't utterly fuck with the canon. This, however, seems to be just another spin off show made for the fact that Disney wants to milk the cash cow a bit more.

Kinda want...I guess.

Seriously I actually enjoyed the Clone Wars stuff near the end.
I really enjoyed the Umbara episodes that focused on the Clones.

Every scene is shot... at night!

See the true darkness of the force through the eyes of the jedi... during a solar eclipse

Watch Yoda embrace the darkness... every time he closes his eyes

Reel in horror as the black void infests Young Anakin... when the fridge light goes out and he can't read the lid of the last Yoplait yogurt to see if it's strawberry or raspberry.

Turns out, it was plum!

Actually that's still a better origin story than killing younglings because sand gets everywhere.

Agreed, mainly because the Clones weren't protected characters, and therefore there was real tension in whether or not they'd make it. Any time an episode starred Obi, Anakin, or any other mainstay character, all the tension and thrill went out the window for me because I knew nothing was going to happen.

That being said, I hope they somehow find a way to tie Asohka into this. She doesn't have to be a main character, but I would at least like some closure on her character. Cutting the series off like that makes me feel like I wasted my time watching it.

I hate to say it, but I'm more excited about this series than I am about the new movies. Pablo sounds like he's the type of guy who will try to find a way to make new stories work without destroying the established lore. I'll keep my eye on this.
