1st Chapter of New R.A. Salvatore Book Released for Free

The first chapter of R.A. Salvatore's newest Drizzt Do'Urden book, Night of the Hunter, has been released as a free teaser.

Everyone's favorite drow is at it again. Drizzt Do'Urden and the Companions of the Hall return to the ancient dwarven city of Gauntlgrym in R.A. Salvatore's latest novel, Night of the Hunter. Set to release March 4, publisher Wizards of the Coast has made the first 31 pages available to read for free, which includes the prologue and the entire first chapter. You can download the PDF from the official website. [http://www.wizards.com/dnd/Product.aspx?x=dnd/products/frnovel/nighthunter]

Night of the Hunter is the first book in the Companions Codex series and will retail for $27.95. In it, Drizzt and his friends seek to turn Pwent, loyal shield dwarf of King Bruenor Battlehammer, from vampire back to mortal. Their journey through the Underdark will see them face off against undead and drow alike - possibly under the command of Pwent, himself.

In the book The Last Threshold, the fourth and final in The Neverwinter Saga, Drizzt left a self-loathing Pwent waiting for sunrise in order to commit suicide. In Book One of The Sundering Series, The Companions, Pwent is spotted by Bruenor, so we know the dwarven vampire did not go through with his plan. Instead, he went on to become the leader of an undead band of drow.

The second book in the Companions Codex series, Rise of the King, is set to release August 5.

Honestly I'm pretty excited for this, the first book of this series was really good. I didn't like the neverwinter Saga though so I'm happy to see the companions back.

Because people love to read the books and Wizards keeps paying R.A. Salvatore more money to make more books. Should look at the Forgetten Realms books, the Drizzt series are really the last of the books made for the setting. And Wizards are desperate for someone to write in it, since the others (plain D&D, Eberron, etc) aren't getting books written.

I read the book in the series that follows his origin, I forget the name of it...

I enjoyed it but I definitely could feel like there was more to be explored. Salvatore's capable of good writing, he just... Could do a better job.

I was enthralled by the Dark Elf trilogy and enjoyed the Legacy of the Drow, but I haven't picked up a Salvatore book since. Did I make the right decision?

For the life of me I don't know anyone who is still buying these books. It's like the theory where terrible artistic works keep happening because vengeful time travelers keep buying tickets to Transformers and watch reality tv.

Look on the bright side - someday he'll die.

Granted that a rather long-term bright side, but it's still valid.

There are new and talented authors putting out their entire First Act for free on fresh titles in e-book format. Then selling them at a tenth the price of this.

I'll take the generous author with the affordable new story to tell, and save the other $24.00 on something worthwhile... like 8 other e-books at the same price.

Eh. Tried his books, liked them a little but they were too shallow for me to really get into.
On the other hand, Stormlight Archive book two is out in little over a week! SO HYPED

I echo "Why is this guy still a thing?!"
Read the Icewind Dale Trilogy and the Underdark trilogy as well as some other books back when I read every fantasy-related book I could...And Salvatore's writing is awful and Drizzt is pretty Cthulhudamned dull.

I'm one of those assholes who actually really loves the character of Drizzt and I think Salvatore is a great writer.

HOWEVER. This is absolutely ridiculous. I don't even know how many series ago I gave up.

It's fucking absurd.

Man, I stopped reading these like 10 years ago, and he had already written like 13 or something of the damned books by then. I don't even want to know how many there are now.

Hey, Salvatore! It is time to STOP writing about Drizzt. We get it, you hit the jackpot with him. But it is time to stop. You're thirty books into his story, you've made enough money. Stop milking it.

Salvatore is a mediocre author and Drizzt is a mediocre character. Why are people still buying these books? Give me Richard Lee Buyers and the adventures of Aoth Fezim any day over the amazing purple Mary Sue. You know what? Give me anything Buyers writes over Drizzt. He is the best writer in their stable. Drizzt isn't even the best drow-who-breaks-the-mold in Forgotten Realms. Liriel Baenre has that honor.

That is incorrect. Writers like Erin Evans, Richard Lee Buyers, and Paul Kemp still make books in the universe.

Hush my Brother, we shall not speak of this about ourselves or our fellow comrades!
But in all seriousness I wouldn't consider myself to be an "asshole".

I am with you, that I am currently loving the character and writing, but that is because I can keep up with it and point out the mistakes easily. Sure this may change if the quality goes down further in the series, I can see that after the "Legend of Drizzt" saga, but I want to see this with my own eyes.

And damn, a lot of people are complaining, I can understand them with the point that it CAN go too far. I mean Drizzt is a drow with a limited life expectancy, he can't live forever. And there is so much other things they can do with the world!
I do understand that, there can be too much of one thing.
And this may count.

But anyway, as I said, I want to see it get worse if it does.
Until then, I shall keep reading away, because I am enjoying it and it is giving me inspiration to write my own book and stories.
I think that goes the same to my friend, who is also a writer.

[sub][sub]I mean sure, everyone prefers different writing styles ... but I think Salvatore's is good. Sure sometimes he adds a bit too much of something ... but at least he is good enough to release the book. I can't say the same thing about some people on here.[/sub][/sub]

I always figure self-deprecation and a persecution complex is a good way to avoid arguments.

I certainly understand the problem many people have with him through association. Drizzt himself isn't bad, but he really did spawn countless special snowflake characters.

As for Salvatore, I think his writing was like a mountain-shaped graph in terms of quality. The Icewind Dale trilogy started out really quite simple in the writing style. He improved throughout and by the Dark Elf trilogy he was quite good. The next trilogy was even better written, but by The Silent Blade, he had started faffing about a bit too much. Still good, but a bit on the decline.

I think the furthest I made it was The Orc King. I'm not even sure how many books there were between that and this.

All that said, Icewind Dale through The Underdark trilogy are still some of my favorite novels of all time.
