New Superman: Doomed and Futures End: Booster Gold Tease DC Universe Shakeup

As if that wasn't enough foreshadowing, this week's Futures End: Booster Gold #1 features a multiverse spanning adventure by Booster Gold character that is NOT the Booster Gold of the New 52 universe. In fact, it's strongly indicated that this Booster is the same one readers last saw in the pre-Flashpoint DCU. After bouncing through various alternate universes from the DC Universe, this version of Booster (along with his New 52 counterpart) are captured and interrogated by robots that have very Brainiac-like designs, in order to discover the location of Vanishing Point. Vanishing Point, for those that need a refresher, exists at the last possible moment of the universe and was once the base of operations for the Linear Men, a group of heroes dedicated to the preservation of the DCU timestream.

So, what does this all mean for DC fans? For starters, it seems to acknowledge that the "clean slate" offered by the New 52 reboot wasn't necessarily as clean as once thought. And it hints that we haven't seen the last of the previous universe(s). It also seems to be laying the foundation for the next major DC event, Blood Moon, currently scheduled to start in April of next year. Coincidentally, Blood Moon will also take place during the 30th Anniversary of DC's original Crisis on Infinite Earths. Whether or not Blood Moon will end with yet another universal reboot, a return to the status quo, or something else in between remains to be seen.

One thing that is certain, though, is that whatever trick DC has up its sleeve, the ramifications of this week's DC comic lineup will be felt for some time.

My only thought: How long ago did they reboot with the New 52?

Are they really hinting at undoing the New 52? Look, I get that a lot of fans hate it, but if you're gonna do something like that, stick to your guns. Make it work and convince the fans that it was for the best. If you can't do that, why did you even bother in the first place?

Then again, I don't read comics.

New 52 has been running since late 2011, I believe. That makes this the fastest turnaround "Event" DC has ever done.

Here's my question:
When will DC do a REAL reboot?

No 'O, this is like 5 years AFTER Clack became Superman' or whatever.

I mean, I'd LOVE for DC to start with 'Smallville' like intro set in the CURRENT time (Superman being born in the 90s/00 or something) for all the major JL characters.

They could always do 'flashbacks' for the original JLA or whatever.

To be honest, DC universe shakeups feel about as exciting as a new flavour of chips. Not exactly unheard of.

What's that you say? DC is having yet another multiversal event as a means of fixing the things done in their LAST multiversal event?

GOOD LORD WHO WOULD HAVE SEEN THIS COMING?!?!

Aside from anyone who's read a DC comic in the last 30 years.

*sigh* I haven't even read ANY New 52, and I'm a DC fanboy! And now this... perhaps they'll be punching reality again?

Could we have Oracle and Cassandra Cain back please? Also Simone's Secret Six?

Honestly as much as I love the comics I've read, I'm perfectly happy to keep digging through older stuff based on recommendations rather than tread into the murky and frequently low quality waters of current DC comics.

These reboots to simplify by wiping the slate clean end up being as convoluted as fuck and then they wipe the slate clean again. Why not plot a convoluted as fuck universe from the beginning and then explore that? Give GM and JJ a year to plot a mythology and then introduce us to it mid scene.

Do something interesting DC.

I'm not surprised. I actually liked the New 52. The previous universe was just a disjointed shit storm. That means I have to start stealing comics again? Probably not, I'll just stop reading. It's not exciting and new, at this point it's boring and old.

New 52 got me back after a long absence....I am of the unpopular opinion that whatever they do, they need to mitigate the "nostalgia author factor" (i.e. stop Grant Morrison from effing the continuity up with obscure references to characters from the fifties just because) and tighten up their 52 universes a bit.

Rebooting the New 52 so soon seems like a very bad idea.....although "fixing" some New 52 issues (like how badly the Wildstorm characters have been treated in the New 52) would be wise, I think.

Can't regret the disappearance of Oracle, though. Gail Simone's revival of Barbara Gordon as Batgirl has been fantastic.

Ok, lets restart everything so new readers have a better idea of wtf is going on!

5 years later, I know, lets incorporate the stuff we rebooted, thus making it more confusing for new readers again, but hey, it'll keep the fans happy.

I hope hope hope they don't do this. Not even for one arc. Let the stuff Braniac saw be a easter egg for old school fans. If you have to do the booster gold arc, resolve it quickly and with no real mess involved. Please. Pretty please.

That is the problem with comic book writers: they're almost always fans and thus they keep bringing up stuff from the "good ol' days" as they obviously don't get what a clean slate means.

How is this even a surprise this week? The Anti-Monitor was seen at the end of Forever Evil in May. He never comes 'round with just a pizza and beer to watch the game without a side of universe-crushing event.

In other news, Saga continues to all-my-feels, Guardians makes me cackle, and Steve McNiven on Death of Wolverine makes me wet.

Thanos - "Death clearly is not the end in this universe. --- That final glory is being denied us all."

Drax - "Does it hurt?"

Thanos - "What say you, Destroyer?"

Drax - "When you die here? Does it hurt?"

Thanos - "...Yes."

*disintegration w/ a side of explosion*

Star-Lord - "Okay, that was funny."

So can Deadshot regain his moustache, The Wall regain her weight and age and can Blue Beetle stay dead please?

New 52 is the DC equivalent of Marvel's Ultimate line: interesting update of classic heroes told in the modern day for a modern audience. The difference being: it was an alternate universe that didn't have to worry about the baggage of 50+ years of continuity, so fan boys didn't really rage all that much because there was still the Marvel universe everyone knew and followed as well.

The one thing both ultimate and new52 have in common is that the writers, editors and publishers have no clue what to do with their universes and the vast majority of each is subjectively uninteresting (save for a few series) or alienates a previously established fanbase's precious continuity.

New52 also shot itself in the foot by not taking the time or effort to explain their timeline, instead picking and choosing what is and isn't canon when the plot demands it. This isn't something DC does exclusively. Marvel's also selective with its own canon from time to time, but when you're unclear from the outset of a reboot, it really annoys the dedicated readership.

Good luck DC. Maybe you can reboot Jaime Reyes to not be such a disappointment compared to his post infinite crisis counterpart.

I'm with you on Deadshot and Waller, but I miss Ted Kord! I like the new Blue Beetle to, I was annoyed he got sidelined in the New 52.

I'd be quite happy if DC did that. I like the new stuff, but I do miss the old DCU because I'm a crotchety old fan-boy. The only issue I can see for DC is that it divides their sales as some fans will go for New Superman and some go for Superman Classic.
