Will Dracula Untold Lead to The Avengers For Monsters?

Universal reportedly adds new scene to tie vampire-prequel to upcoming Monster Universe

In the time between greenlighting and completing the vampire origin-story shared universe [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/135756-Dracula-Untold-Trailer-Tells-About-Dracula] for crossovers and team-ups in the style of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

It was presumed that Luke Evans' Dracula from Untold (which will be released in U.S. theaters next week) would not be part of this new strategy, as the film was set up before the Orci/Kurtzman deal. However, Badass Digest [http://badassdigest.com/2014/10/01/dracula-untold-will-fit-into-universals-monsterverse/] reports that Universal has shot new scenes for the film which will allow Dracula Untold to count as a prequel to the "Monsterverse," which was previously set to begin with a new update of The Mummy. It is not known whether these changes are designed to allow Evans to reprise the character.

Dracula Untold is a fictionalized retelling of a 1460 military campaign for which Vlad Tepes III (aka "Vlad the Impaler") - the historical figure on whom Brahm Stoker based Count Dracula - gained his initial fame. In this version, Tepes seeks to gain supernatural powers to aid in turning back an Ottoman invasion of Wallachia, powers which will ultimately transform him into the vampire Dracula.

I already saw a trailer for Dracula Untold & I already want to skip seeing it. I expect whatever they're making though to be a bunch of sexy cosplayers.

huh...well this could be really interesting. Dracula Untold looked a lot like it could have been a Castlevania movie so maybe the other upcoming Universal Monster movies will be similarly great. I'm just going to sit here with my fingers crossed for a Dracula vs Frankenstein flick. Also want to point out that I really liked Wolfman from...however many years in the not-too-distant past.

Hmmm... I'm getting a Van Helsing vibe with this "Monsterverse" thing...

Let's see where this goes...

Also I can't shake off the feeling that this new Dracula film is basically "Lords of Shadow: The Movie".

Why does all this shared movie universe always come across like that scene in 30 rock where they try to design a microwave and instead design the Pontiac Aztec. Marvel worked in part because no one believed they could do what they did in the way that they did. In a way we still don't believe it. How can you make Captain America have more broad appeal than a flag pole with tights on? how can you make Thor not look ridiculous? Some of these things were easier and some of them were harder, But Marvel keeps making the hard look just as good as the easy ones. Than there is the shared Universe which becomes easier because marvel already was that. I don't think if they had set these comics to be this way to begin with, it wouldn't have worked nearly as well as it did. Van Helsing for instance tried to combine all these monster movies however that was a disaster, and party because these stories have nothing to do with each other aside from being kind of lumped together in our shared subconscious of "monsters." So everything they do is going to seem forced as if every panel is going to try and scream in unison "THIS IS A FRANCHISE!!! SEE? WE'RE WORLD BUILDING! WWORLD BUILDING!!!" I think weirdly a good example of that is ASM2 which goes through such lengths to set itself up as a franchise that everything just feels tacky like its trying to reach into your pocket ahead of time for the ticket price of all the movies you'll have to see for this stuff to pay off.

I think this movie/franchise idea is going to fail. It has no backbone. You can't just grab a bunch of ideas, mash them together and expect it to work.

Ugh. Vampire Batman Begins looks pretty bad as it is. This Monsterverse thing is seriously jumping the gun. Still, I am glad to see other studios giving cross-continuity a try.

In the time between greenlighting and completing the vampire origin-story Dracula Untold, Universal Pictures decided to take the rest of their Universal Monsters franchises in a different direction - drafting Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman to devise a series of new present-day reboots of the classic characters which can be tied together into a shared universe for crossovers and team-ups in the style of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Oh, for Christ's sake. Must everything be an attempt to make Marvel's money by copying their formula? Can we not just have movies that--

--wait, does that picture show a Metalunan mu-tant from This Island Earth?

Does this mean there's a chance I'll see Dracula, the wolfman, and the mummy fighting along a mu-tant?

...I tentatively withdraw my complaint.

Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman? So less Avengers and more The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen [http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0311429/]?

Didn't this kind of premise exist with Van Helsing not too long ago (starring Hugh Jackman)? Good or not (I liked it) it had werewolves, vampires, and Frankenstein. Not exactly the same, but very similar in terms of throwing several movie monsters together in one film.

Doesn't Marvel ALREADY HAVE a 'Monsters Avengers' or something?

Now THAT would be cool!

I'd say "I was interested until Orci and Kurtzman" but then I remember that Orci and Kurtzman are only so ubiquitous because they follow orders, and have never had an ounce of creative control on most of their projects. They're like flesh-and-blood Alan Smithees.

So, which hack producer/director/executive/whichever is using them as a convenient scapegoat for his own fuckups this time?

Every time I see one of these movies, a part of me goes "uugh, let's see how they bastardize my nation's long and unpleasant history again"

Eh, maybe this one won't be as xenophobic as every other one.

I dunno... will anything ever top Monster Squad?
Somehow, some way the same damn thought crossed my cortex... and universes died in the holocaust.

OT: I'm iffy on it, I enjoyed the Bram Stoker/Gary Oldman version very much but if this one turns out well enough, I'll consider more. After all, I'm happy with interconnected stories in movies as long as they're not too divergent.

I do wonder how the hell they would bring the new Dracula into a "monsterverse," considering how extremely powerful the guy is in the trailers. Thor got a major power downgrade so the other Avengers were relevant in that film, this guy is taking on giant armies by himself.

I really don't know how to feel about this...

On one hand, this could lead to a Mutant reboot... On the other hand, this could lead to a Van Helsing reboot... or, worse, a Monster Squad reboot...

DAMMIT! *flips self due to lack of proper table* Now, I want to rewatch Van Helsing!
Oh wait... I can just watch Helsing Unlimited again...
