Firefly Actors Crowdfunding New TV Series

Alan Tudyk is crowdfunding Con Man, a new comedy series co-starring actor Nathan Fillion.

For more than a decade <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/134160-LEGO-Firefly-Build-Compressed-Into-9-Minute-Video>Firefly fans have been hoping, begging and praying for something that, with each passing year, becomes less and less likely. We're talking, of course, about a renewed television team-up of the show's beloved cast. Well, Browncoats, the day you've been waiting for is here. After years of waiting the actors behind Firefly have announced a new series that will bring them back together to delight and entertain us once again.

Or rather two of them have, at least.

It's a good two, though! Not that there was really a bad two. Any who! Alan Tudyk has announced the launch of his very own IndieGoGo campaign aimed at financing a new series dubbed Con Man. The show will follow the adventures of Wray Nerely (Tudyk), an actor who gained cult fame in a sci-fi series name Spectrum that was cancelled "too soon." Now a regular guest on the sci-fi convention circuit, the show will chronicle "all the weird and crazy things that happen to Wray" as he travels from event to event. <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/136490-Nathan-Fillions-Guardians-of-the-Galaxy-Cameo-Revealed>Nathan Fillion will also have a role in the series both as a producer and performing as the character Jack Moore. The star of Spectrum, Moore will serve as Wray's friend and opposite, having gone on "to become a major movie star" after the show ended. Seth Green, Felicia Day and Gina Torres (also of Firefly fame!) may also have yet to be revealed roles.

Described by Tudyk as "a light-hearted take on the personalities, luminaries, and characters in the sci¬fi community," it's his hope to create a show "[celebrating] the world where heroes, villains, zombie hunters, and space pirates all overlap." To create Con Man, Tudyk has set a goal of $425,000. This price will cover the costs of creating the first three episodes, all of which will be available through Vimeo. It's also a goal that the project, in its opening hours, has already surpassed. Tudyk also included $500,000 and $575,000 stretch goals unlocking goodies like "private" Instagram account access and another episode. At the rate the project is raking in dough, we feel confident in saying it'll get up that high.

Because while you're absolutely right... It's them. It's Fillion and Tudyk. I'm not a mindless follower for many things, but for the Firefly Crew, just call me 'Baa-Baa Black Sheep'.

So, I read the title of this article and my intellectual brain read it as a new series that a few actors from Firefly are pitching but my eternally hopeful brain initially saw it as the firefly actors trying to crowdsource a new firefly series.

The only thing I feel right now disappointment in knowing it'll be even longer before the possible return of Firefly.

I've never crowdfunded anything before but I'd get right on that train for a new Firefly series.

I'll pass, the reason why people want these actors back is because they did a good job playing characters in an iconic science fiction show that died too soon. Even if it wasn't "Firefly" the chemistry was good enough where I'd be interested if they launched another Science Fiction show with that cast, but I have little interest in a low-budget nerd culture commentary. It was cute when Felicia Day did it, in part because she wasn't well established (it put her on the map), even doing a season at a con, but it's not something I personally crave more of.

Besides, people will hate me for saying this, but as much as I love the guy I'm not sure if Nathan Fillion could step into an action role again even if someone was to offer him one. The celebrity and comedic acting in "Castle" seem to have gotten to him, and to be honest when I look at the huge mess under his eyes and how much it shows (bags, etc..) despite professional makeup people, it either makes me think he's developed a serious drug habit or has not aged gracefully. I haven't seen the rest of him recently (probably from not watching Castle for the last season or two) but I do wonder if he could say convincingly trade punches with space bad guys, or take off his shirt to have battle wounds treated and produce a physique that allows for some suspension of disbelief. I mean it has been a good number of years since he did "Firefly" and even longer since he was a "Big Bad" on Buffy The Vampire Slayer. I suppose they could always try and do the whole David Carridine: Kung Fu Masta trick, which is to give the character long hair, and then have a stunt double of the same basic height and build do all the action in costume with their back always to the camera so all you can see around the face/head is the wig... but really that's kind of pushing it, especially nowadays, and I tend to laugh whenever I see it still being done. If you look (seriously) especially at the later seasons of "Kung-Fu: The Legend Continues" it because hugely obvious whenever Caine is supposed to be doing a fight scenes. He couldn't even do partials towards the end (with the motion intensive stuff being a double, but some scenes cut into the fight where you can see the actor's face). Of course he was a lot older at the time than Nathan Fillion is now I believe, but still, I have my doubts... ones I'd be happy to see dispelled at some point.

Oh and one thing I've said a few times before, Viacom/Paramount could probably do worse than to try and get Nathan Fillion under contract for a Star Trek series. I keep hearing rumors one is being developed under the code name "Prime Universe" with an eye towards finding ways to make it semi-interactive through ongoing ARGs and such. Viacom apparently having reserved a number of domain names related to this, and put patents/claims on a few pieces of online technology even though I was never able to verify it. The least reliable parts of the rumor are allegedly that it will be doing away with "The JJ Verse" and a lot of "Enterprise" and focusing on the "TNG" universe and it's spin offs as the "real universe" but with the others being viewed as possible realities, the players in the ARG contextually being temporal agents in the present observing and "participating" in various events by doing internet research and comparing things between various possible realities. The reason why I mention they should get Nathan is that he's old enough to convincingly captain a military star ship and if he takes a "command role" so to speak he wouldn't have to do a lot of action, like Picard he could leave it to the younger, and more physically capable cast members. Of course that said Janeway did have her moments even as an older lady so I suppose he could do a bit, especially if it comes down to looking haggard and convincingly pointing a prop gun...

Baldwin's politics are insane, but it would be even more crazy to suggest that he can't find work. He has done very well since the Fall of Firefly.

This show is gonna be good. I find it hilarious when actors lampoon themselves. James Van der'beek(sp?) in Don't trust the B' in apartment 23. That was a great show that ended to soon as well.

I like these actors, but I'm not a big fan of this "meta" stuff. I guess that, if I was into conventions/scifi-fandom (beyond enjoying the shows), it might be different, though. Basically, I'd want more Firefly, not a show about Firefly-fans, if that makes sense.

I'm sure they've given their own opinions of what happened to Firefly but I wouldn't even know where to look to find their thoughts. I imagine it's something like "It sucked but we love our fans".

Yeah maybe, but this kind of thing can also easily turn into "we may be out of work actors, but look at these stupid nerds eh? lulz, nerds". Honestly, even if it is decent for a meta-commentary; pass.

Am I the only one who's not getting why this is supposed to be meta? I mean, Alan Tudyk hasn't exactly been out of work since Firefly went of the air. He's been a steadily working actor who's appeared in a wide variety of roles, most of which bared little to no resemblance to Wash (case in point, see him in "42"). So now we're supposed to find the premise of him as a typecast former sci-fi star who can only survive on the convention circuit inherently funny? I'm just not seeing it.
