I saw this last night. For me and my friends, it started out kind of slow. Sadness got on our nerves because she was such a downer. Like, seriously, get over it. Which is impossible, seeing as she is literally sadness, but it kind of got annoying at the beginning.
But then we started to realize that Joy was just as bad, but since she's happy and smiles, we didn't catch it right away. That's when the movie sort of started picking up for me at least, but I still wasn't feeling the greatness that comes with the Pixar movies. I started to worry that I was sitting through another Brave. Pretty movie, with a few small laughs, but nothing amazing.
And then the adventure starts, and the movie starts to pick up. And then, there's this one part where...just ugh. As my friend put it, "The FEELS!!!" The review was wrong--there was no sniffling. There were straight tears running down my face and I was struggling not to shake in my seat and just start sobbing. I don't know, maybe it's because I can relate to a lot of the stuff that was from Riley' past, but damn. This movie hit me harder than the ending of Toy Story. It was like Pixar started it out slow because they were pulling their fist back for a punch so hard that it lays you out on the floor. And it did. It's really good, but oh man, it did not pull the emotional punches once it decided to start throwing them.
