Pacific Rim 2 to Start Shooting This November

The sequel to Guillermo Del Toro's second giant robot movie will begin shooting this November in Toronto.

While film-goers in North America <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/125971-Pacific-Rim-Beaten-by-Adam-Sandler-at-Box-Office>largely ignored it, Pacific Rim was easily <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/escape-to-the-movies/7705-Pacific-Rim>one of the best action films of 2013 and remains one of the coolest things non-Marvel things the film industry has put out in a good long time. The film's fan were thrilled, in turn, when its overseas success prompted Legendary Pictures to greenlight a sequel, currently slated to release <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/135723-Pacific-Rim-2-Has-A-Release-Date>in April 2017. That being the case, recent reports have stated the film now has a title and a date to start shooting.

According to said reports, Pacific Rim 2 will be subtitled "Maelstrom." Shooting for the film, in turn, is apparently slated to begin this coming November and will take place at Pinewood Toronto Studios. Speaking recently about the sequel, director Guillermo del Toro indicated that it will be set a few years after the first movie and will focus primarily on its city-stomping baddies the Kaiju. He's also promised that it will be "very different" from its predecessor.

Just speaking personally, this news is more than a little exciting to me. I've been a fan of giant robots blowing things up since Toonami first introduced me <a href=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WVcCB4fze94>to Gundam back in the early 2000s. And while Pacific Rim wasn't perfect, it was still about as awesome a giant-robots-smashing-stuff flick as one could ever hope for Hollywood to produce. Seriously, just watch <a href=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gWmHA1Kh8SQ>this scene and tell me this movie isn't amazing. It even makes that overused Inception "waaaaaah" noise seem cool again! That, my friends, is a feat all on its own.

As awesome as the movie may be, the title always sounds dirty to me and makes me giggle.

Anyways, this is good. I still haven't seen the first one, but I want to.

So it will be "very different"? Good, means that there is a small chance that this one will be entertaining.

I see I'm not the only one who was underwhelmed with the original? For somebody like Del Toro, the film we got was rather Michael Bay. Set pieces, CG, not much brains. I don't hold out much hope for the sequel. Given the subject material of giant robots and giant monsters, what plots could possibly be explored that *aren't* just variations on Japanophile-friendly slugfests and buildings falling down?

Hmm, more giant robots vs giant monsters is always welcome, but I can't help but wonder: How do you make a sequel to Pacific Rim? The ending of that movie is about as definitive to the story as you can get: the portal is closed, and no more Kaiju to be seen. Although they'll probably just make the Herpes plot: no matter how hard you try, it always comes back.

Fucking yes.

Hopefully this one will do better at US Domestic this time around.

Not that I care mind, since the first movie was fucking great and just more of it is good enough :D

The BWAAAAH sound makes sense because Gypsy Danger has a lighthouse bullhorn. BWAAAAH.

The big issue with the first film, often with any film that underperforms, is marketing. Pacific Rim had an okay marketing campaign, but nothing compared to the massive hundred million dollar advertising campaigns Disney and Warner Brothers pound out to promote their superhero films.

Seeing part 1 in IMAX 3D: Mind blown with awesomeness.
Knowing Part 2 is on the way still: blissful end of a long day! ;) <3

Nice. I liked the first one specifically because it didn't try to be more than exactly what it was. Action figures smashing against each other. It needed just enough plot to get back to the smashy smashy. I hope they do the same.

That said....

When will we get more news of At The Mountains of Madness?

This is sort of turning into how any announcement by bethesda that wasn't Fallout 4 tended to be responded with "Fallout 4?"

I hope this time around they bring a little more life to their leads. Charlie Hunnam and Rinko Kikuchi had like zero charisma or chemistry on the screen. Charlie Day, Ron Perlman, and Idris Elba were the only ones who seemed like they were having any fun at all.

Although the first Pacific Rim was mostly boring after the first watch......now only watch it for the monster/robot fights. But i would gladly watch the sequel ten times if it meant there was a chance for either Hellboy 3 or At The Mountains of Madness being made.

I'll never understand people who say the first movie was boring. 50% of it was giant robots punching the crap out of giant monsters to a soundtrack that worked soooo well. Sure it was cheesey as all hell, but name another movie that even comes close to such a wonderful ratio.

Personally I'm more fascinated as to exactly what those people count as "exciting" honestly. Like...okay Pacific Rim wasn't a very 'clever' movie. It wasn't particularly deep or complex. Some of the references are clever and there were some nice touches but overall the plot was fairly straightforward. But said plot was solid enough and more importantly it held together some of the best action scenes in a movie in years. Gigantic robots punching out enormous monsters with incredibly nice visuals. Whenever I just want to rewatch a solid action film rather than anything more intricate Pacific Rim is up there on the list as being good, straight forward entertainment.

I mean...if someone outright finds that boring then what on Earth do they do for excitement? Wire their genitals to a car battery?

Anyway, hugely looking forward to this. Definitely a must-see.

My one real complaint in the movie (not counting things like "Why didn't they use the sword to start?" and stuff like that) is that the other Jaegers and their pilots sucked. I don't mean that they didn't look cool or something like that. I mean that they really sucked. These remaining pilots were supposed to be the best. I mean, you had a Russian couple who were some of the longest living pilots ever, and then you had the Chinese triplets. Triplets! This is something that no other Jaeger has ever had. The movie even took time to mention that they had a killer move that made them famous.

And what happens? They both get taken out not only in the same fight, but by the same monster. Come on! I loved seeing the fights in this movie, but I was really disappointed that we got cheated out of what should have been a brawl. I hope that this second movie has that in it. One-on-one is good, but I want to see many-on-many please.

I still remember seeing this at a midnight screening with me and my best friends, cheering with the rest of the audience over giant robots fighting giant monsters... If only there was more marketing for the first movie, though... With that said, I'm still stoked that the sequel's even going to come out...

Other than that, I'm sure the sequel being" different" would surprise me in some way, shape, or form...
