I see I'm not the only one who was underwhelmed with the original? For somebody like Del Toro, the film we got was rather Michael Bay. Set pieces, CG, not much brains. I don't hold out much hope for the sequel. Given the subject material of giant robots and giant monsters, what plots could possibly be explored that *aren't* just variations on Japanophile-friendly slugfests and buildings falling down?
Del Toro's Pacific Rim was nothing like Bay movie. Just because movie has big set-pieces and action doesn't make it a Bay movie. You can do simple and rather brainless well, Pacific Rim, and you can do poorly, Transformers. The subject matter of giant robots and monsters is inherently awesome. Most great works of literature and film have rather simplistic and basic plots.

I mean...if someone outright finds that boring then what on Earth do they do for excitement? Wire their genitals to a car battery?
What I do with my genitals and automotive parts is my own business!

OT: Ah, glad to see this is starting. For the perceived failure of the first one I distinctly recall it being the most successful new IP that year. Even if the first Pacific Rim wasn't that great (most of the action scenes were at night/deep in the ocean to hide the sub-par CGI) it still was something new and used practical effects. Those are two things I'll always support.

Plus, it's giant robots punching giants monsters in the face. If you don't love that, get the fuck out.

Anyone have word on that cartoon that was announced a while back?

Pacific Rim is one of the very few movies in the dark age of film that I could enjoy. The characters were bland and it took awhile to get to the real action (since the other pilots had to be wiped out so easily), but it was worth the wait.

Oh please be good! If you're making a spirit bomb of quality I'd gladly give you my energy.

Great news! I just hope that they focus more on the non-USA crews and Jaegers this time around. Seriously, Gypsy Danger was the most bland, generic and uninteresting of all the robots and got the lion's share of screen time, while most of the other crews seemed to be there just to get their asses kicked. Seeing as the film tanked in the USA, but did pretty great everywhere else, that doesn't seem like an unreasonable hope...

As of right now, I have no idea. The sequel's coming out in two years so we've got some time but I'm with you, I think we should have heard something by now.
Anyway.
Yes, just yes. That's all I have to say.
And goodness gracious, I haven't finished my Jaeger/Kaiju collection yet, I should get on that. Especially since Tacit Ronin took a dive off the mantle and lost a foot; we've got a Jaeger down.
