First Look: Sam Wilson, Captain America #1

The latest in Marvel's series of sneak peeks promises "a new beginning" for the superhero (formerly) known as Falcon.

Marvel is really pulling out all the stops for their fall lineup, it seems. We've already seen exclusive previews of both [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/142358-Gallery-A-First-Look-at-Doctor-Strange-1#&gid=gallery_4685&pid=1] -- both of which hint at huge changes to the Marvel universe -- and now, they've given us a first look at their upcoming series, Sam Wilson, Captain America #1!

Following the all-new adventures of the first African-American superhero in mainstream comics, Sam Wilson, Captain America is the brainchild of writer Nick Spencer and artist Daniel Acuña, and will see the man formerly known as Falcon take over for Steve Rogers when his super serum finally wears off. (*crosses fingers and prays for a Captain Falcon crossover issue*)

The official synopsis and variant covers for Sam Wilson, Captain America #1 are below.

This October, Captain America takes up the shield once more. Today, Marvel is pleased to present your new look at SAM WILSON, CAPTAIN AMERICA #1 - the explosive new series from Nick Spencer (Ant-Man) and Daniel Acuña (Uncanny Avengers)! When Steve Rogers was restored to his natural age, he chose only his closest and most trusted ally to take up the mantle of Captain America. Now, as the Marvel Universe charges forward into a new age, the Avenger formerly known as the Falcon stands proud as the one and only Captain America! Yet eight months have passed, and these two former friends now find themselves on opposite sides. What could have happened to divide them? More importantly - who will you stand with? New friends, new foes, and a new beginning for Sam Wilson this October in SAM WILSON, CAPTAIN AMERICA #1!

Didn't they already do this a year ago?

Yep here it is http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/136210-BREAKING-Sam-Wilson-Formerly-The-Falcon-is-Marvels-New-Captain-America

Can't Marvel count to 10 anymore? is that why they keep rebooting comics every time they reach issue 6?

Because issue #0 and #1 sell more then any other. Long gone are the days where we'll see things reach issue #100, #200, or the excessively rare #400.

Because then they can reboot the movies based off the rebooted comics and this whole vicious cycle can just continue to repeat.

is it me, or is that Foxxy Cleopatra in one of the pictures? On a more serious note, I do enjoy Anthony Mackie in the movies as Sam Wilson and I think he could pull it off as Captain America. (as long as the script is good)

Those are exceptions to the rule. After all, looking at the top 10 sellers half are issue 5 or earlier, only 3 are past issue 8 and only 1 is past issue 50.

Going into the top 100, 25 are past issue 9, and only the Walking Dead is past issue 50.

That's why I said thank god (Jim?) for them,

Every time there is a major creative team change (usually just a new author) they reboot the series. There are some exceptions buts how its been for the past couple of years. The last Captain America series was written by Rick Reminder who has left Marvel for a short time and is now Nick Spencer is taking over. Its kinda annoying but I also get it. It makes things a bit clearer where there is a change over and the new arcs and stuff you can expect.

Why wasn't he given any powers?

I mean... I don't know. Captain America was always lean with the power side, but the super soldier serum made him the pinnacle human. That helped make him special.

This is like a regular guy who has a few laser blasters strapped knifes to his hand and calling himself the new Wolverine. It's nice to honor him... but what are you actually going to do to replicate what the original can do?

Am I the only one who wants to see a return of BuckyCap in a "Battle For The Cowl" type situation? Because watching Cap's WW2 sidekick and his modern partner going head to head in a punch up would be fantastic.

Clearly you need to read up more on the Marvel universe. Sam Wilson has one of the most unique and impressive superpowers...

He's black.

And apparently he can control his wingsuit while carrying a large spherical shield with no issue in regards to aerodynamics or lack of agility.

He's also one of the more qualified members of the Avengers to take the mantel, given how in the past he's covered for Captain America. Whilst I don't doubt that his ethnicity played a factor in becoming Captain America, to pin it exclusively on his skin color is ignoring years of story (that's still in the streamlined canon). On the aerodynamics, just suspend your disbelief- his wings would need to be FAR bigger to allow him to get into the air.

I like Falcon America, though I'm wishing the series was kinda more like the Hawkeye series. I don't mind the diversification, because fuck it, it's kinda fun and they give reasons for it, though I agree Lady Thor was egregious and mishandled.

Kinda wish though we didn't have to suffer a new #1 every other year. It's getting frustrating when I'm called and told my comic series has been canceled, but it's returning anyway basically the same but with he numbers set back.

When discussing his morals and dependability he is a great choice for taking over from Cap. The problem is he's a very capable pilot and combatant in a prototype suit whereas Cap is essentially the pinnacle of human physicality +1.

I'd even rate Punisher over Falcon because the Punisher has got that crazy years of combat experience combined with Batman level tactical/strategic planning and bottomless determination. There is something "supernatural" about Punisher and Cap but not so for Falcon.

He's a very solid pick.

As to the supernatural element you describe (though I know it's not literal for frank), perhaps it's this run which will give Sam the chance to develop that 'above and beyond' facet which the other two seem to display.
Picking up the shield for a character like Sam could be that inspirational X factor which allows him to outstrip even his own perception of his limits.

I really like how they got inspiration from the cover of the second album of A$AP Rocky, Long.Live.A$AP:

EDIT: Ah, that was a kind of marketing thing they did: http://consequenceofsound.net/2015/07/marvel-reimagines-famous-rap-albums-with-comic-book-characters/

Quite a nice idea, if you ask me

A$AP has got a bit of reforming to do before he is Captain America material.

Falcon doesn't seem to me to need anything supernatural, just give his exosuit more punch. In the movies using the exosuit as defense/offense in melee requires a lot more intricate CGI than old cap punching and throwing his shield though.

PS. I'd just have the shield get broken and let it be used to give him a vibranium exosuit instead.

Interestingly enough, wearing the American Flag as an article of clothing is actually considered disrespectful to the flag.
