Cage Defends Heavy Rain Striptease Scene

The sequence in Heavy Rain where player character Madison Paige strips for a nightclub owner might make players uncomfortable, but according to Quantic Dream's David Cage, that's the whole point.

Speaking with Eurogamer [http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/cage-defends-madison-striptease-scene], Cage said that if the E3 showing of the Heavy Rain striptease sequence made gamers uncomfortable, it had succeeded in its goal. (Warning: Minor Spoilers) The scene involves the character of Madison Paige trying to get information from a nightclub owner, but finding that he "only has eyes" for the girls dancing nearby in various states of address.

Paige has the option to retire to a nearby restroom to, ahem, "doll [herself] up" before returning and dancing to get his attention - and upon retiring with said club owner to a nearby room to be alone, she can produce a weapon to threaten him and get the information she's after. Cage told Eurogamer that Quantic had "had a couple of people who felt uncomfortable watching the scene," but that it wasn't a bad thing - in fact, that's "exactly what [he] wanted."

[blockquote]You can't pretend to trigger different types of emotions and just focus on adrenaline and fright and competition and frustration. You need to go through different emotions, and showing this scene in particular was for us a test to see if we can make people feel like Madison, having to get naked to do a striptease in front of this ugly guy, and obviously it worked because people felt very uncomfortable.[/blockquote]

Given that Heavy Rain's cinematic, pseudo-quick-time-event storytelling relies heavily on player input to make things happen, said player would have to be actively pushing the buttons to make Paige dance. Cage had been wondering if having the player controlling her in this manner would merely result in a gamer who "would just enjoy getting her naked and have this teenage kind of feel," but that apparently doesn't seem to have been the case.

Of course, depending on censorship boards, who knows if said striptease sequence will escape condemnation by moral watchdog groups when Heavy Rain is released next year? Cage isn't worried: "[Y]you should certainly not count on me to censor myself, and say I can't do this or don't want to do that because it's too sensitive or too controversial or whatever."

On the other hand, if the striptease scene must be cut, they could always replace it with flying Dragonball Z Peruvian bums. It worked for Indigo Prophecy, right?

Quite interesting, but this is something I would expect from the studio that brought us Indigo Prophecy. Make fun of that game all you want, it was excellent until the last one-third or maybe even one-fourth
After the main character "died", he became some kind of superhero flying all over the place and using force chokes to kill poor soliders.

Here in the UK we got to keep the boobs in Fahrenheit. They didn't make a lick of sense, but by Jove we had them in all their polygonal glory!

But there was sex and nudity in "Indigo prophecy" (Fahrenheit is a much better name), did they cut it for the Americans then?

Ugh, why can't everyone just shut the hell up about censorship. Its really starting to get annoying.

So are there actually any boobs or not? If the tease has her get down to nothing but her underwear then anyone who gets comfortably is being silly, in my own opinion anyway.

Not trying to start another war on rating boards, but I think the ESRB is pretty much the only one in the world who would have a problem with that. Quantic Dream has already proven they have no fear in showing skin (having to prove that in this industry is pretty sad, tbh), and nowhere - except, you guessed it, North America - it was a problem.

Fahrenheit/Indigo Prophecy sharing the same rating with porn games? Seriously?

Probably, I wouldn't be suprised.

I'm guessing at most(or less?) you just see her in a bra and panties. I doubt there will be full frontal nudity like what the media will make it out to be.

They were indeed removed as they did not make much sense anyway like the rest of the end of the game.

Haha, love it, gamers feel uncomfortable with having to relate to a strong female character and making her "do stuff", but when they aren't emotionally attached to a character its all good?.

Put your hands up for Sig Freud, I love his pity.
you could argue a case towards Oedipus Complex, what with Madison being the main character, hence the matriarch.

Good on him. It's nice to see games actually invoke some emotion. Just imagine how Bioshocj would have turned out without that "A man chooses, a slave obeys" scene... Was I the only one staring at the controller in horror trying to make it stop by button mashing?

I TOTALLY DID THAT.

OT: At a glance, it seems like the striptease scene could have just been written in for the sake of being controversial, but I'd have to wait and see what context the game puts it in. Being naked in novels tends to be gripping; being naked in movie theatres tends to be gratuitous.

Wait...if the striptease is maneuvered with controls similar to what we have seen in the trailers...does that mean we can mess up the "striptease" if we don't press the right button sequences?

Considering Fahrenheit had two sex scenes with full-frontal nudity (as far as I remember) and one of them was interactive, unless Cage starts censoring himself (which he says he won't) I think it's pretty much guaranteed that there'll be at least one sex scene in Heavy Rain (and we'll probably get to see more than Mass Effect 2), he's had sex in his games as far back as Nomad Soul. Whether they'll have to cut it out for the North American release is an open question.

Also, given all the scenes are interactive, I'm somewhat curious as to what happens to Madison if the player doesn't knock out the bad guy when given the chance.

Promise of partial nudity = a million more sales. Nice marketing scheme, Quantic Dream!

Oh, and I wish this was coming out for the PC. It looks really cool. I enjoyed Fahrenheit (their last game) too, even though I found a lot to critisize... and this looks a lot better; partial nudity aside.

It would indeed be bizarre...I wonder if there is a possibility to die in that scenario (slip on the stripper pole and break your neck)
