Avatar 2 Coming Christmas 2017

Director James Cameron has revealed that the next chapter in the Avatar franchise will be hitting theaters in December 2017.

Remember a few years back before Disney bought Star Wars and we were all still looking for a new franchise to fill the gaping "science fiction adventure" hole in Hollywood's blockbuster lineup? Back in 2009, it looked like James Cameron Avatar might do the trick. Well-liked by moviegoers, it earned nearly $3 billion in worldwide ticket sales, prompting Cameron and company to announce <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/104757-James-Cameron-Commits-to-Avatar-2-3>two more sequels that then seemed to pretty much fall off the map. Well Navi fans can now rejoice because Avatar 2 has finally received a release window.

Speaking about the film in a recent interview, Cameron revealed that Avatar 2 will hit theaters in December 2017. "Christmas of 2017 is the target [release date]. At least, that's what we've announced," he said. Going on he confirmed that writing for the film "is ongoing, but almost finished." He further stated that the film's production has "design more or less finished" and that its "technical development," "stages" and "infrastructure" are all "done." The plan for the Avatar sequels is to film all the planned sequels at the same time and then release them once a year after filming wraps up. Cameron has said that each of the new movies "stand alone" while also containing a "meta-narrative that runs across the three movies."

While I'll admit that my personal interest in Avatar has definitely waned since the film's original release, I'm going to go ahead and say that I'll be curious to see how the new movies pan out and if audiences still care about Pandora after eight years filled with big developments like the Marvel Cinematic Universe and <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/142356-Star-Wars-Episode-VIII-Will-Begin-Filming-This-Month>the new Star Wars films. What about you? Will Avatar 2 be on your movie radar come 2017? Or have bigger and better things captured too much of your attention?

If it is not about Humans, who have superior technology, logistics, weapons and so on and on, coming back and actually taking Pandora with force (or buying it with beeds) then it can go to Hell.

Ah dang, from what I read, Star Wars Episode 8 will be released on May 26, 2017 and I thought it was going to be a yearly films like the LoTR/ The Hobbit triliogy (otherwise it would had been a good contender).

OT- I suppose I will get it another chance if the plot will be better this time round (I mean what other movies will be out in December?) and make it so that the effect doesn't look crap without 3D!

With Star Wars, they are planning to have a movie in the Star Wars universe each year, but they won't all be "main" Star Wars films. Think of it like the Marvel movies. Sure, there is a movie (or two, or three) in the Marvel universe a year, but there is a bigger gap between Avengers movies.

As for this news...I'm probably just about the only person who hasn't seen Avatar under the age of 45, but the fact that he's taking his time with the sequel is probably a good thing. James Cameron knows how to make movies, even if they aren't to everyone's tastes.

They are yearly, just not the main trilogy.

The first Avatar was one of the dumbest movies I've ever seen, with a stupid, unoriginal story, cringeworthy dialogue, shallow characters, and terrible acting (even from the more renowned actors). The only thing it got for it were some nice colourful pictures. While suffering through it, I wished more than once I had gotten hammered beforehand, so I could enjoy the images without being distracted by the awful script Cameron crapped out in his lunch break. I have no idea what he us babbling about that "writing is still ongoing". There was zero effort put into the writing of Avatar 1, there will be zero effort put into the writing of the sequels.

Pretty much this. There's no logical other outcome. Also I'd like to see the main character be called out for the whole god damn fight being his fault for not doing his one job.

What is the most common penalty for treason during actual war? Can't quite remember the name... One that starts with D. Defecation? No, no, no. Deliverance? Not that either. Well, forgot the word, silly me.

not to forget the whole pandora invasion was done to save whole human race so the main character literaly chooses small community who could easily be relocated instead of millions of humans. the more you think about avatar the less sense it actualy makes.

Love(d) Avatar, but admittedly I never saw the need for a sequel. But under the premise of "will audiences still care in light of the MCU and Star Wars"...well, yes, but when you set the bar that low, that's not saying much.

So, yes. Bring on sci-fi December 2017. And see if sci-fa manages to do a better job with Ep. 8 than Ep. 7.

Oh my god, what the hell is this. I just finished regenerating my childhood with some old school Justice League; why do you have to come along and kill it again. I'd be disgusted and mad as hell if I weren't laughing my ass off.

On topic: hated the first James Cameron Tree-of-Mind-Rape* Furry-Porn debacle; I don't think I'll be caring too much about another couple of them being thrown out, even if a large group of the world views them as new additions alongside the Mona Lisa.

*seriously though, actually pretty dark*

I liked it much more when it was called Princess Mononoke, and it came out in 1997.

Um... isn't his girlfriend Ms. Piggy? Wouldn't that just be cross-breeding?

What the heck are they gonna write about? The inevitable sad conclusion of humans blowing pandora up to hell? What would be the point in that? Or maybe they'll come "in peace" again? What the heck are they gonna do? Whether you liked Avatar or not, it ended pretty finally.

The first made a butt load of cash, so of course they were going to do a follow up ... nothing says "make a sequel" than a bunch of money being made.

I never saw the first one 'cos I had a severe attack of people saying "it's SO good you have to watch it" etc that no matter how good the film is, it would never live up to the hype people kept giving it.
