Pornhub Launches Free Virtual Reality Channel for Oculus Rift


If you need additional motivation to shell out big bucks [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/166857-Oculus-Founder-Says-400-Is-Fair-For-PSVR] for the Oculus Rift, consider this enticing announcement by Pornhub: The company has launched a completely free channel featuring more than two dozen videos of virtual reality porn with up to full 360-degrees of visual immersion.

While other companies in the adult industry have launched VR channels, Pornhub's videos being free will likely be a game-changer.

"At Pornhub it is our duty to provide our global audience with the latest in cutting edge technology," said Pornhub's Vice President, Corey Price. "Virtual reality is the next phase in the constantly metamorphosing world of adult entertainment, and will provide users with a mesmeric experience unlike anything they've seen before."

Pornhub, who partnered with BaDoinkVR in this project, says their VR videos will be playable with not only the Oculus Rift but also other VR headsets including Google Cardboard and Samsung Gear VR.

Of course, there are a couple of catches. First of all, without a paid membership, videos max out at 720p rather than 1080p. Additionally, as you'd expect, early reports indicate that there are a lot of ads in the free version.

Group scenes come to mind, orgies and such.

But yeah, I perused to current offerings to see what the fuss was about and it's kind of pointless. I mean, I wasn't using an actual headset so I expect there's some benefit to the perspective, but aside from the view only being 180 degrees (if that), the majority of videos really just feature a girl in front of a guy, and there's really not many places to be looking.

Still, I'm sure that'll get better with time.

What bothers me more is the lack of distinction lately between 360? video and VR. To me, it's not VR unless there's actually a virtual environment. As in, you can move around within it, even a little, even if you can only move your head to view thing things from a different angle. If it's just a static viewpoint into a recorded video, then it's not VR, just normal POV video that happens to be best experienced with a headset.

It does already exist. Maybe not full body suits yet, but there are devices out there that allow you to ..erm.. stimulate your partner from miles away.

It's not about being able to see what's behind you. Joke responses aside. It's about the immersion of feeling like you're in that room and being to look around and observe it like you would. Immersion is what VR offers. I could see this being very lucrative in making porn that much more interactive. Like others are saying, if porn adopts this new media, it will survive.

There is something different about looking at a flat screen from a distance compared to looking through a screen as though you're in the environment. This is true of so many more scenarios than just porn. For example, I use google cardboard to explore museums and watch videos. There is something different about feeling like you're in a movie theater watching a movie or like you're in a museum looking at art than just looking at a 2d representation of them.
