How Modern Warfare 2's Night Vision Goggles Are Made

Ever wondered what a factory neck-deep in production of night vision goggles for a limited edition of a videogame looks like? Look no further than these behind-the-scenes snaps of the manufacturing of Modern Warfare 2's Prestige Edition NVGs.

Sometimes it's best to not look behind the curtains of the cool doodads we regularly acquire, but since much about Modern Warfare 2's Prestige Edition night vision goggles remains a mystery, it's only understandable to want to see what exactly is going into the manufacturing of these supposedly fully-functioning collector's items.

These pictures [http://modernwarfare247.com/news/leaked-mw2-nvg-pictures] should give you a nice peek at the production line for the Prestige Edition goggles. They were snapped by a worker in the Chinese toy factory where the goggles are being made, a worker who apparently is a Call of Duty fan and didn't realize what he's been working on is the Modern Warfare 2 NVGs until now.

Yes, these images will destroy whatever illusion you might have about the NVGs being some sort of vaunted treasure of videogame collectibles. There are shots of dozens of NVGs lying around, stacked on top of each other in plastic bins, and a snap of the goggle production line, where workers who are getting paid diddly to put together these damn things which you will be paying a whole hell of a lot for come November.

But anyway, enough of that depressing thought. What intrigues me here is this picture [http://modernwarfare247.com/images/articles/night-vision-goggles-leaked/night-vision-goggles-3_tn.jpg] of the interior components of the NVGs. I'm no expert on military equipment, but there seem to be enough doodads in there to rest my fears that these things won't actually work. Anyone able to recognize any of the parts in these pictures, feel free to enlighten us on the finer points of night vision goggle manufacturing.

I like the subtle touch of Asian sweatshop workers in the background.

well what a surprise NVGs that will cost you about a third of the price of working Night vision goggles aren't going to work.

Please people someone else must of realized they wouldn't work effectively with such a small price tag.

Real NVG can cost anywhere from 200-1000 dollars and up..

Did any of you honestly think you would be getting REAL goggles?

what your getting are green tinted, ridiculous sun glasses that MIGHT have a green light or something inside.

shame though, I wanted some 14 year old kid to turn all the lights off, put on a pair of NVG and turn his TV on, instantly blinding him.

My guess is that the goggles are going to kind of work, but still break after about a week of use.
Thus, cheap(er) manufacturing price and the promise of "working goggles". Take that, Prestige-Edition-buying suckers.

hahh My instant gut feeling I doubt any of those workers are getting a fair price out of making these goggles.

They'll probably work about as good as the night vision in the game. In other words, weak greenish tinting and possibly slight light amplification. But then again, they don't want them to work so well that people go blind and file lawsuits. Seems like a pretty safe move. Besides, after the initial novelty, who's seriously going to use bulky night vision goggles in their every day routine? They're going to sit on a shelf, and for that purpose, they'll work just great.

Isn't everything made in china now? I've yet to see something that's made out of plastic and isn't from China. At least it's better than gold farming.

I will. I have already made plans to go outside and use them.

I doubt there are many products NOT made there, These keys I'm hammering right now are probably made from the same exact person that is screwing the Modern Warfare Goggles into place.

I'm pretty sure they will work. Think how simple that NV option on your digital camera is, and then think of that strapped around your head. These are in no way military grade, but you should be able to see the hand in front of you at close range. I doubt they will do much else.

Rule of thumb for military hardware. The more expensive, the better.

Edit: I'm waiting for the number of Law suits because of kids running out side and staring at the sun with them.

Everyone saying its a sweatshop and they aren't getting paid, did the guy taking them have the cash to buy COD games and something to play them on? unless he is one of those nasty pirates sucking the life out of the games industry, that would be a nice spot of irony.

Actually, that looks like it could be real (low quality) nvgs.

Night vision goggles rely on the fact that most digital camera's can detect infrared light, so what they do is put a camera behind a filter thats coloured to be infrared, then the camera switches the output wavelength to something that humans can see, resulting in a monochrome (usually green/black or black/white) way to see in the dark.

These look like they could be real, don't expect them to work at any range though.

thats just my guess from the pictures, i have no interest in mw2.

What baffles me is this: Even if they DO work properly, when would they ever come in handy? You can get a flashlight for 1/4 of the price (random numbers ftw) and you won't look like a complete idiot using it either.
