Yep, I'm basically looking for a nice old-schoolish Shoot Em up, side or vertical scrolling, doesn't matter. There gotta be games like this out there. I tried Zeit² (see Steam store -> action) yesterday, and I might give the full version a try (interesting gameplay), but it doesn't quite fit the bill (no real upgrades, bland gfx). What I'm looking for is more like a contemporary version of R-Type 2 [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T2ms0lORGiU]... so, you Escapists, apart from pointing me to Kongregate, Armorgames and such.. any suggestions?

edit: oh, for PC. And keys > mouse!

Ikaruga.

Gunstar Heroes. (now on Steam, PS3, 360, and Wii!)

Anything by Treasure or Cave.

I bet there are some niche fans here but I liked Beat Hazard. It's on Steam. It's fun, at least for a while, but it doesn't quite suit your description what your looking for.

How about Zeit^2 (link [http://store.steampowered.com/app/33390/]) ? It looks good. Ion Assault and Bullet Candy are some too, found by a quick Steam search for Shoot 'Em Up. Some of those do have quite eye-melting graphics it seems, as does Beat Hazard.

Duke Nukem 2.
It's the one I've played the most growing up, so it's my first choice.

It's not oldschoolish though.

um... get mame and just go mental with the roms you will find something to keep you happy, thats probably ur best bet... but if u want run & gun shmups then contra, gunstar heroes, metal slug games are awesome. But of course you said you want games more like r-type then i'd recommend any of the Darius games (especially g-darius) the giga wing games (but the will make ur eyes hurt) or for something more old school then defender :)

EDIT: was about to say Ikaruga as well but got ninja'd :)

For side-scrolling shooters, I'd recommend Metal Slug and Contra. They are both fun to play solo or with two players.

For vertical shooters, I'd go for Raiden.
