2K Games Bringing XCOM: Enemy Unknown to iOS

2K's hit turn-based strategy title will be finding its way to iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch this summer.

There was a point, not too long ago, when 2K Games had branded strategy titles as 2K Games some substantial profits.

Since then, there have been no notions of non-viability when it comes to strategy titles. 2K and Firaxis have released several updates for Enemy Unknown, and have been working hard to bring it to platforms beyond the original PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 release. 2K recently confirmed an <a href=http://www.polygon.com/2013/3/23/4139926/xcom-enemy-unknown-coming-to-mac-april-25>April 25th release date for the Mac port at this year's PAX East. In a surprise turn, it also revealed that the game will be making its way to iOS devices.

While the Mac port has been in the works for some time, the iOS version is new. In addition to an iPad port, 2K has confirmed that the game will also be coming to iPhone and iPod Touch, essentially turning Enemy Unknown into a portable title. Any sacrifices made during the porting process are expected to be fairly minimal. "The idea was to port the game fully," said Jake Solomon, lead developer of Enemy Unknown. "The one exception we made was to the number of maps in the game, but we still have all the destructible environments, there's the fog of war - this is a full AAA game we're porting. It really is XCOM."

Solomon also believes the turn-based nature of Enemy Unknown will help the port circumvent many of the control pitfalls that often accompany touch-based titles. "I think that moving your soldiers feels super intuitive with touch controls," said Solomon. "It was one of those things that was a challenge for us to figure out on consoles where you steer the cursor with the gamepad. It was actually much easier on the iPad because it mimics the PC in the sense that it's easier to steer your soldier, because all you do is look at the screen and click."

Though no specific release date has been announced, 2K has indiciated the iOS version of XCOM: Enemy Unknown will be available this summer as a premium-priced app.

Whatever, just wash your hands.
Does this mean they will be making the mouse and keyboard controls not kinda suck?

Now why aren't they bringing it to 3DS?
I would gladly buy it again just to have it be portable, so they should just release it on 3DS already.

Could they like, fix some of the glaring bugs that are still in the game first?

I didn't think they sucked at all? In fact, other than the small issue of doors not opening up when I press the corresponding key during the correct time and location, it worked very well for me.
Its much easier to zoom out and rotate the map on a control pad, plus allot of the controls are slightly awkward on the K/M, you don't really notice it till you compare it directly to a pad.

I think someone already stated that the 3DS isn't suitable for the Unreal Engine 3*, while the UE3 has been around for ages on the iOS, see Infinity Blade.

But beyond that, yeah, it would be nice to have XCOM or a similar game for the 3DS, 'cause you know, buttons better than a touch screen and the two screens of the DS has already proven to be pretty useful for strategy games.

[small]*I don't remember who said that and I might be wrong.[/small]

EDIT: I know Fire Emblem already exists, no need to reply.

XCOM has been on the 3DS before. (Kind of, sort of)

That is done by a different team within Firaxis.

Yes - because they won't change them. Original controls of XCOM on PC were flawless (there were some issues with camera, but that was map-related, not control-related)

I read all but the last word of this article, closed my eyes and said "Wii U" to myself and now my face is kinda red. The U with its touchpad would likely be a good fit for RTS titles possibly and given the U's release forecast I'm sure we're going to get the X-Com: Enemy Unknown announcement by E3.

ANYWAY X-C:EU on the iOS...does not affect me in any way, shape or, form because I don't have an iOS to game on...nor do I game on my Droid but that's neither here nor there. I can't wait to grab this game once it's either A announced on the Wii U or B given a major price drop. Either way the only thing keeping me away is the genre which I don't care for.

Flawless controls and camera issues are mutuality exclusive.

Clicking on things and rotating the map is just such a hassle at times, especially when trying to manage multiple elevations.
Q/E? That's what I always use.
