Whatever, just wash your hands.
if this game didnt call itself xcom I might be willing to give it a shot but since it insists on calling itself xcom and having nothing to do with xcom, fuck it

I'm fairly certain I don't want to have anything to do with this game. Despite other people's opinions, after having watched the same E3 reports and Q&A sessions with the devs, I did not come away feeling hopeful.

Ultimately, if the game is good, I probably will get it. I'm just saying, chances are that it won't be. Otherwise - why abandon the strategy aspect of the game so obviously for twitch gameplay?

Also, what's up with the balls on developers these days? They have shrunk faster than the average IQ score. X-COM is the perfect franchise for a RTS title (Apocolypse was technically one, even though it still had optional turn based play) yet developers and publishers have pretty much abandoned the genre to Blizzard, who mind you, are more than happy to rake in sqazillions of dollars with StarCraft II.

I was really looking forward to buying this, but now....

This game will have (and this is what 2K said):

-No Base Building
-No Base Control
-No Tanks to send into battle
-No Research (they have something called "Research points", which is just another way of saying "experience points", and it kind of works just like FFX's Sphere Grid)
-No Manufacturing
-No Random Missions
-No UFO to shoot down
-No more then two men/NPCs to command, but they can never die
-No Nations/City to protect
-No Micromanaging of any kind
-No real Strategy of any kind
-Nothing, and I mean *NOTHING* from the first 3 games to connect it to X-COM
-NO homage beyond ONE or TWO names.

I'm not joking when I say Enforcer had more homages and references then this game! it's like they never wanted to make an X-COM game in the first place. :(

You know what the really bad part is? This game is all about Gays and civil rights! No, I, am, not, joking.

http://blogs.phillymag.com/gphilly/2011/06/20/video-gaming-is-so-gay/

I'll say it again: THIS GAME IS NOT ABOUT ALIENS; IT'S ABOUT GAYs AND BLACKS RIGHTS IN THE 60s! this is the only reason why it takes place in the 60s, and is set in the USA only.

There is even a Gay scientist who is a Black Hole Sue, and is (in Jordan Thomas own words) "one of the best scientists in the world"

Except was this done by a well founded reputation? There is NO hype for this, and its met with rage from all sides of the spectrum. Bethesda had the resources to pull it off, 2K does not. For the market, its just another generic alien shooter. Faceless, with no redeeming qualities.
A tactical shooter set in 1950s/60s with a rather well designed enemy from what I've seen? Looks pretty promising.

The only reason it's getting hate is because it's not true to the extremely outdated game that was made over ten years ago. It's getting hate because of it's name, pure and simple.
Only 2 GOTYs matter, which are from two academies.
Says who? You?

I trust my sources until I have a reason not too. I have yet to see a legitimate gaming website give out an award like that to a game that hasn't deserved it, or at least wasn't a bad game by any stretch of the imagination.

"well designed enemy"??? Have you seem the 2011 Trailer?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v8otmMpaIdQ

The 'aliens' are nothing more then re-skined humans and turrets, and the big black ring is a joke that also feels like a turret.

The funny thing is I was defending this game until I saw the new Trailer. This game isn't even going to try to take *anything* from the first 3 games. In fact, it's ripping-off Mass Effect more then anything else!

I've seen all the trailers, and the giant black Blob and polygonal humanoid looking things are very interesting to me. It's not a Russian or a terrorist, it's something new and unique, or at the very least, a revamped version of the old enemies.

I... How? How is this ripping off Mass Effect? The three person teams? And we're mad about this? I suppose you're about to call this game a straight rip off of Call of Duty for having aim down sights?

What am I looking at?

Is my reaction suppose to be "Eghast!! They are trying to integrate social issues into the game to give the characters and setting more depth? FUCK THIS GAME!"

I don't know what you expected my reaction to be, but this really just makes me more interested in it.

I don't care who you are, the only reason this game is getting hate is because it's called XCOM.

Of course, if they advertise hard enough the dumbshit 360 crowed will buy enough of it to make bank anyway, thus successfully murdering another franchise.
Murdering a franchise whose last release was over a decade ago? Yeah ok...
Doesn't matter when the last release was if your pretty much just taking the name and making at best a ghost recon game with aliens. I feel bad for all the real XCOM fans that this game is being made and being turned into something so..unlike what it was. Oh well don't worry I am sure someday someone will take an old game you loved and turn it into a Halo style shooter.
If the franchise was dead I wouldn't care. I'm capable of ignoring things that I'm not interested in.

And my previous remark was in response to FredTheUndead claiming that this will 'murder' the XCOM franchise, a franchise that hasn't released a new game for over a decade. Regardless of your personal opinion regarding XCOM, I'd say it was already long buried before 2K decided to change the IP.

The more you speak the more obvious it is you know nothing about Xcom (or Fallout for that matter, but that's an argument for elsewhere). These enemies have nothing to do with the actual Xcom enemies, that would actually be pretty cool, but would require being set much further in the future and having more than 3 enemy designs.

By having gameplay that is exactly the same, and adding these features in response to complaints that the game had nothing to do with tactics. The three man squads, the special powers, the upgrade system, it's all Mass Effect.

If they'd called it Xenophobia Rebirth or Alien Shooter #32, I'd give it a chance. But with Xcom as its name, sorry I'm not fooled.

Why is it so hard to just recreate the original XCom with better graphics and a more streamlined interface?

Alas, I'm afraid that no longer interests the gamers of today.

Roll in the next wave of shooters.

I never, not once, claimed to know anything about Xcom, the games from 10 years ago. And explain to me what exactly I don't know about Fallout. That it wasn't always a first person shooter?

I do know what types of games these are.

What I am saying, is that I know something about this game. And that the sheer stupidity of the masses of gamers spewing out hatred for a game that may in fact have a tremendous amount of potential Because of what it's named.

So... 3 man squads is now Mass Effects' thing? That was really so ground breaking and original by the devs at Bioware, that warrants that they copied them? Next thing you're gonna tell me is that they stole a crouching button from Halo.

No, this right here is not a valid "they copied them" complaint. The simple fact that it's a first person shooter makes this argument completely moot.
Why yes that's exactly why people hate it. It claims it is Xcom when it is not, in fact, Xcom at all.
I'd hate to repeat myself, so I will rephrase.

Fucking listen to yourself.

You hate the game because of the name. The name of a game people stopped playing 10 years ago. A game that's mechanics are so outdated that the majority of gamers don't even know what the genre is called anymore.

And there's a good reason for that, believe me.

No we hate it becuase its a shitty cash in to the shooter market and they've admitted as much - they are coping mass affect, becuase it sold

They're tacking on a name - to try and cash in which is pissing the fans off.

Seriously call it Alien Attack or something else and I'd go 'Meh another shooter' call it Xcom and I want something that true to the spirit of Xcom

It was a fantastic game which I've sunk more hours in then I care to admit, I've completed xcom enemy unknown probably 100's of times - Terror from the deep dozens, Apocalypse fully maybe 1/2 a dozen and Interceptor maybe only once.

See Interceptor was a space combat game BUT

I had base building
I had research
I had a plot threatning to destroy earth
There was micro maangment, handling relations etc

It was an Xcom game....by least fav as I sucked at it

THIS IS NOT XCOM

Make a haloville game where mastercheif grows feckin' space turnips and it's about as close as this gets.....

So we hate it becuase its a cheap nasty cash in on the name yes

No, not just the three man squads, everything about it, the upgrade system, the mission setup they've been describing, this is a template that extremely closely resembles Mass Effect. Not necessarily an issue, if it weren't being used as "OH LOOK NOW WE MADE IT TACTICAL IT'S TOTALLY XCOM."

And no you don't know anything about Fallout if you don't think 3 doesn't break lore, continuity, or has a connected, thought out setting rather than being random set pieces. But again, different argument for another time.

And again, YES that's the point. They dug up this turn based strategy franchise that's fondly remembered by many a PC gamer and slapped the name onto something that is entirely unrelated in a cheap attempt to boost sales, which is probably an indication that the game isn't going to be that great anyway if they're trying that shit. Now, you COULD make a decent shooter RPG in the Xcom setting, with XCOM enemies, weapons, and powers, but they aren't. They're making unrelated bullshit.

AND OH YEAH, TURN BASED STRATEGY IS TOTALLY DEAD BRO, CIVILIZATION, FIRE EMBLEM, FINAL FANTASY TACTICS, THE ENTIRE LIBRARY OF PARADOX, THESE AREN'T REAL THINGS WITH HUGE FANBASES!

They could have made a new Xcom with a streamlined interface, or they could have done what Fallout New Vegas did and use a new template on the existing setting to nicely fuse the new with the old. Both of those would have been fine, and properly marketed and handled, they could even be great. But this isn't either of those, it's something unrelated. That's why people are angry. It's like if they brought back the Ultima series as a film noir FPS with bullet time mechanics.

Baka!

Lo, and see that you are wrong:

(he even says "Mass Effect")

There was another video on youtube that showed you upgrading your men's power, but I can't find it.

Believe me, the "good reason" is because they are too afraid to try new things:
http://kotaku.com/5811665/2011-is-all-about-the-gun-barrels
http://www.cracked.com/blog/the-6-most-ominous-trends-in-video-games/

I remenber the good old times were you can play as a god, or play as a Dungeon Keeper or Evil Genius. I remember when you can play as an Emperor-- controling a galaxie, or play as a captain of a mothership. They had much better stories and imagination then what you get now a days. Look:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LEZ75L36m74
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JCr9VdfMghM
I have many more games and links, But I don't feel like looking them all up. Just be happy that I looked up these two videos for you.

I like guns and iron sights too, but X-COM was much, much better then this garbage! I wanted X-COM to be a FPS too, but not like this! I wanted X-COM to be like X-COM alliance, and that was better then this crap:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oVwIkJPMeP4
But alliance was only a Beta at the time, so it still needed a lot of work.

I've seen all the trailers, and the giant black Blob and polygonal humanoid looking things are very interesting to me. It's not a Russian or a terrorist, it's something new and unique,
The Blob are kind of new, but the polygonal humanoid are crap! They hide behind cover and shoot-- just like any Russian and/or a terrorist. They are boring!. This is from X-COM Apocalypse, and they look much better:
http://ufopedia.csignal.org/apocapedia/Psimorph.html
http://ufopedia.csignal.org/apocapedia/Psimorph.html
http://ufopedia.csignal.org/apocapedia/Spitter.html

You know the headcrab from Half-Life? Well, they kind-of ripped it off from Apocalypse! back when it was called the Brainsucker:
http://ufopedia.csignal.org/apocapedia/Brainsucker.html

What I am saying, is that I know something about this game. And that the sheer stupidity of the masses of gamers spewing out hatred for a game that may in fact have a tremendous amount of potential Because of what it's named.

Ignoring everything else (seriously, I don't speak that language. He could have said "Not like Mass Effect" for all I know, and you just gave me about 10 links to look up.

No thanks)

Because, the last game came out 10 years ago. I know it may not seem it, but that series is only still "fun" to you because of pure nostalgia.

You should buy it because it might be a fun game. Is that really so hard a concept to grasp, or is the name of Xcom (and believe me, I know it was fucking retarded that they named it that) really just automatically destroy the game, no matter how good it is?
FredTheUndead said:

Good fucking God. Did I ever say anything about that game not breaking lore or continuity? No, I said the game was fun on it's own merits, a simple idea that you people really cannot seem to understand.

It's getting to the point where I feel like I'm going to have to break into your dreams and plant the idea there to have any hope of getting that through your heads.
AND OH YEAH, TURN BASED STRATEGY IS TOTALLY DEAD BRO, CIVILIZATION, FIRE EMBLEM, FINAL FANTASY TACTICS, THE ENTIRE LIBRARY OF PARADOX, THESE AREN'T REAL THINGS WITH HUGE FANBASES!
Really? Huge fanbases huh?

No, turn based stratedgy has been slowly dying for the past few years. It's integration into the next generation of consoles and games was not as smooth as it once was.
It's like if they brought back the Ultima series as a film noir FPS with bullet time mechanics.
Who knows.

Maybe they are thinking about that at this very moment.
