That's all fair and well, now onto my next question.

How can i improve this whilst playing online?
sadly there is real no way that you can improve your ping due to your connection type and also what kind of signal are you getting? GPRS? 3G? or HSDPA?

if you are getting GPRS, you need to by a booster for that mobile broadband which will boost the signal for a quite a price

EDIT: corrected the acronyms

You don't need any more than 1mbps to be getting a decent ping on servers close to you, you shouldn't be having any problems playing online games.

It's not the speed of your internet that is the issue.

What is your upload?

This is what you should have if you want to play online games fast. Comcast offers this for 30 bucks a month.

I have never gotten 17 mbps download.
I get maybe 8 mbps maximum out of any of those tests, and I'm in suburban Chicago (and I know one of the servers they test from is there)

i have to live third month for a month in a place where internet is 12kb/s... now im internet is 12kb/s on that hilltop in norway where internet is a rare and unspoken thing around this village....be happy, likewise i had for 2 years a internet that only could reach 1 mb/s with a max download on month on 2 gb wich is TERRIBLE!
if you hate it, move, if you have a hope on it will get better like most modern societies i recommend waiting

The spambots are getting through the captcha again...

Edit: Whoops, I forgot that I hadn't contributed to the thread yet. I don't really have much to contribute, aside from sending my condolences to the OP on having such crappy internet. I did that speedtest thing myself, and I found out something really weird about my university's ISP; our upload is significantly faster than our download rate, which is already respectable. It's no wonder the internet here is so good for gaming.

Join virgin media, fiber optic cables make for faster internet, if your using orange broadband that will go through a BT line and they are basically old as hell copper wires, and the dont conduct very well any more unless you are very close to a telephone exchange, your best bet is a fibre optic provider like virgin.

i got a Ping of 13ms
Download speed of 9.87mb/s
and an upload of 0.46mbps

Get fibre optic. But try not to get it from stupid companies. Virgin have oversubscribed our area to the point where at peak times we get zero. Literally zero. It's if you can get BT infinity in your area then I think the lines are still fairly clean and not junked up with thousands of students.

Other solutions include: Use wired connections if connecting to a router. They're more stable and more or less always faster than wireless connections. If you're connecting via mobile broadvand dongle, find where in your house gets the most signal. If you really want, get a female friend to cry down the phone to your provider until they give you a better deal.

Extra info:

I did a speedtest.net run, and got this:

0.35MB/S and 0.36MB/S Compared to 2mbps on both upload and download...

What does this mean?
Make sure you run the test several times...

btw, where did you get the 2 mb speed number?
2mbps is what we're supposed to be paying for.
But from what i can remember, i think the line was capped slightly in the past, so it could be below 2MBPS.
You're paying for "UP TO 2mbps". Realistically, you will only get that if you are right next to the server and there is no one else online or using any electrics within a mile.

My upload speed is 0.15 mbps. I'm dead fucking serious. My download, on the other hand, is 3.39. *confuzzled*
That's all fair and well, now onto my next question.

How can i improve this whilst playing online?
Honestly, you can have good ping with 56k. It all depends on what's being transferred in the netcode. You can't really improve it. More bandwidth can help, but ping has more to do with distance from the server than bandwidth. Traffic on relay nodes is probably second. The servers bandwidth is probably third place for ping. (It has to upload -all- the data, times however many people are on the server)

Uploads are usually about 20% of your download speed (unless you pay for SDSL or something.)

Really, nothing you can do but A. Move. B. Pick a different server. C. Host your own. D. Upgrade.

D is out like you said but...there you go.
