La-Mulana is an excruciatingly hard platformer that's a full-on homage to old MSX games. Super Boink-o-Doink does the same, except the theme is how the game seems take delight in you failing often. Then there's Yume Nikki, a surreal trek through the main character's nightmares with a rather shocking ending. Out of Kenta Cho's titles I'd recommend Tumiki Fighters and Torus Trooper. Then there's Arm Joe: a fighting game based on Les Miserables. A lot of people mention Pixel's Cave Story but they forget to mention his other (also awesome) games Ikachan and Guxt.

Passage, Gravitation and Between really don't feel like games in any traditional sense but everyone should try them out if they can. Everybody knows Purho from Crayon Physics but some of his earlier games are worth a look as well: 4 Minutes and 33 Seconds of Uniqueness, The Truth About The Video Game Industry and Evolution SHMUP.

If you don't care about the game being Flash, there's plenty more. Don't Look Back is a very good example of this.

That's 17 already from the top of my head. I was going to list a whole bunch more but I don't want to bore people with huge huge lists.

I'd suggest Castle Crashers, my friends have have it and say it's pretty fun. Alien Hominid was also fun, but very frustrating.

I would be happy to self-pimp for this cause as well! All can be found at http://www.hamumu.com :

Dr. Lunatic Supreme With Cheese - the one and only. Odd, perhaps.
Loonyland - A Zelda-ish cartoon action-RPG
Loonyland 2 - A cross between Zelda, Diablo, and WoW (without all that internet nonsense). And Garfield. With guys in bunny suits!
etc.

And our mini-games, which are certainly fitting the desire for experimental weirdness (the above are certainly exceedingly weird stylistically of course, but that's just how I am):
Moon Invaders - quickie little game, very different take on Tower Defense
NPC Quest - an RPG you don't actually play, but there is skill involved unlike Progress Quest
Ninja Academy - a ninja platformer controlled by a single button... but with like 10 different moves anyway!
Still Pond - art, man, it's art.
Two Roads - also art... maybe?!
Hitsuji, Ninja Kitty, Medusa's Lament.. etc. Good stuff you should experience once in your life.

And a shout-out to a phenomenon that I am only a small part of: http://www.towlr.com - destroy your mind with the power of Towlr. Seriously, not to be missed, by anyone.

+ Towlr may frustrate you. This is normal. +

The Path (admittedly, already reviewed by Susan, but y'know) and Dangerous High School Girls in Trouble are the two on my "To play" list.

Oh, and "And Yet it Moves" also looks to warrant a mention.

I don't know how to link properly but. Narbacular drop. The predeccessor to portal. The main character being called Princess no knees, because she can't jump. Its quite short. But you can see where its going.

Savage 2 : A tortured Soul or Savage 1: Battle for newerh ,quite whoopass games.
Used to be indie games, but they had lot of success. Graphics are pretty, gameplay is addictive, and Taawus is a fanboy.

The definition of "indie game" is indeed very biased and you can easily start a whole discussion about that alone.

Myself, I'd call the 2 savage games (indeed extremely nice, you should check this out if only because of the hybrid gameplay) indie games.

Hey Endo, does this mean you're giving us regular updates on how your finding it so far? Or are we going to have to wait until this time next month for your thoughts on indie games?
Quite eager to read about your findings.

oh man! Definitely play Dwarf Fortress. It's a ridiculous pseudo-ASCII game. So much fun. You'll never empathize with moving smiley faces in the same way as you do in DF.

What qualifies as Indie, by the by? I mean, Crusaders (and Deus Vult) and all those game developed by Paradox has a publisher: Paradox, but definitely wasn't "mainstream" by stretch of the imagination.

I also think you should play Iji [http://gmc.yoyogames.com/index.php?showtopic=395662]. It is so good it should NOT be freeware, but Ultimortal is nice enough to let you play it all for free. It contains a lot of depth and HUGE amounts of secrets and Easter eggs. I can almost guarantee you'll play it more than once.

I'd tell you to play my games, but you NEED to play Iji, so I won't distract you through useless begging.
