Gran Turismo 5 and Forza 3 Backers Square Off

Gran Turismo 5 creator Kazunori Yamauchi might think his game "looks better than reality," but Microsoft's Phil Spencer says that Forza 3 is "the only racing sim that's shipping this generation."

You know, I'm just going to come right out and say it: I couldn't give half a plague-infested rat's ass about either Forza 3 or Gran Turismo 5 because I think racing games are about as dull as watching linoleum peel. But some people swear by them, and as fate would have it, those people fall neatly down console war fanboy lines: Sony fanboys froth over Gran Turismo 5, while Xbox fanboys salivate over Forza 3.

Naturally, this sort of console war head-to-head is the sort of situation that can only be resolved with a brutal cagematch to the death, or failing that, studio representatives snarking at each other.

Speaking with NowGamer [http://www.nowgamer.com/news/1461/yamauchi-gran-turismo-5-better-than-reality], Polyphony Digital man Kazunori Yamauchi said that GT5 didn't just look good, the game looked "better than reality." you see those cars outside your window? GT5 looks better:

[blockquote]"'Better than reality' - yeah, that's one way of putting it. In a way, it's kind of a given that it's going to look better than reality. The thing about reality is that the criteria for looking "real" are actually a lot stricter and volatile than you'd expect. The way the sun shines, reflects off something, the way it lights scenery - we seldom have the opportunity to see what we consider "reality" under the best and most aesthetically pleasing conditions."[/blockquote]

Okay, maybe that quote isn't as insane as it sounded in excerpt - Yamauchi is saying that creating these graphics in a virtual framework allows the team to show off all of the beauty of the product in an ideal situation with none of its flaws. Makes sense, kind of.

Aha, but Microsoft development boss Phil Spencer wasn't going to let Yamauchi overshadow the release of Forza 3 so easily: Spencer spoke with Gamasutra [http://www.gamasutra.com/view/feature/4154/the_man_at_the_center_of_.php?page=3] and took a dig at the long development time of GT5. When asked if Microsoft was (like Sony) focusing on the development of AAA first-and-second-party titles for its platform, Spencer confirmed that the strategy was the same - but developers had to actually ship the product, first.

[blockquote]"Absolutely. And to ship them! That's an important part of our strategy. Look at Forza shipping next month: the definitive racing sim this generation. You could say it's the only racing sim that's shipping this generation."[/blockquote]

So, GT5 looks better than reality, but this super-real nature means that it won't end up shipping this generation. That's what I'm getting, here.

Can I get an "Oh, Snap!" please?

I don't really care, as I can get both and make an honest comparison.
But the Forza guy could have also dissed GT5 Prologue's awful design choices.

There's only one thing I can say on this subject. Sure, they're both shiney. Sure, they're both realistic racers. BUT... Forza has always been, in my opinion, much more fun.

I don't care for racing games either, but Gran Turismo 5 looks so f*cking good that it nearly overrules my dislike for the genre.

Gran Turismo is the only racing game series I actually liked.

But meh not sure I'll ever get around to buying a PS3 any time soon.

I could never really get into racing games, although I had Gran Turismo 2 on the Playstation. It was fun at the time in all it's pixelated gloriness.

"Oh, Snap!"

TBH, I don't care for racing sims. I prefer arcade racers.

My guess is that Forza will be the successor, it blended realism and arcade pretty well.

Thing is, i belive that GT5 WILL look better, have more cars, AND ¸possibly better damage modeling (yes, i recall a vid of it being shownn), BUT forza 3 has that awsome paint shop, extrapolating from 2, making the eventual comparison between the 2 products very interesting...

...unless t10 mmake a 4th forza before GT5`s finished!

More fun, how? They're nearly identical gameplay. Race, upgrade, race, win, etc.

I think the game with the most variety (tracks, cars, events) is best. Graphics will be great on both, as will the gameplay/physics. So unless one of them can ramp-up the replay value, I don't see how you can claim one is better than the other.

Way back when I had a PS1, I enjoyed GT2, and now that I have a 360, I think Forza 2 is a hell of a lot of fun.
Forza 2 is slightly easier, though that's probably a function of the better gamepad more than anything else.

*sigh* I miss back when NFS:3 Hot Pursuit came out. In my opinion, that was the last really good one in the Need for Speed series.

EDIT: Which, if I'm not being clear, was the racing series I grew up on (mostly).

I honestly don't get whats the difference between those 2 racing simulations. To me, they look like just regular racing cars.

So, Polyphony doesn't mention the competition, the very opposite of picking a fight. BUT, apparently, because MS disses the competition with FUD, we report it as a square off?

Are you sure you know the difference between a fight and a sucker punch?

I'll be getting Forza 3, I played 2 and 1. Loved them, and they're pretty good as race simulators go, the only Gran Turismo game I liked was the original on PS1.

What I see here:

Polyphony praising their own game. Normal and reasonable.

Microsoft attacking the competition. Pointless and dickish.

Oh well Phil Spencer needs to get his facts straight because Gran Turismo 5 is coming out in the 4th quater next year! GTPSP also came out last thursday on the 1st, which is going to allow you to take all your cars you obtain in it and transfer them to GT5 once it comes out.

Another side note on which is superior or has more influence. The first production Mercedes AMG SLS was relvealed at TGS at the GT5 booth, and Ployphony Digital were the ones who designed the info desplay screen in the new R-35 GT-R.

its not dickish if its a sad fact. its going on 3 years or more for GT5 to come out and there still is no clear release date.
