Super Mario Galaxy 2 Could Use the Super Guide

Shigeru Miyamoto says Super Mario Galaxy 2 will be tough, but to alleviate casual gamer frustration may include the Super Guide feature from New Super Mario Bros. Wii.

In an interview with Official Nintendo Magazine [http://www.officialnintendomagazine.co.uk/article.php?id=13241], Shigeru Miyamoto sounded off on the possibility of incorporating the Super Guide into Super Mario Galaxy 2. The Super Guide debuted in New Super Mario Bros. Wii and is basically an auto-play feature that has a computer controlled character playing through any of the game's levels to aid incapable playerw. Said players can jump into the character's shoes at any time to take over and complete the level themselves.

Miyamoto did not confirm nor deny the inclusion of the Super Guide into Galaxy 2, but left the possibility open. "Whether or not we are going to incorporate the Super Guide, I just cannot tell ... In general, wherever and whenever appropriate, I think we will want to incorporate that kind of thing, but I cannot commit to anything specific right now." As for why it might be included, Miyamoto revealed: "Well, as far as the challenge of Super Mario Galaxy 2 is concerned, I think it's going to be a really challenging game."

New Super Mario Bros. Wii was already known to be challenging [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/95316-New-Super-Mario-Bros-Wii-Reportedly-Wicked-Hard], and with Miyamoto now publicly stating that Galaxy 2 will have a similar bite, it looks like Nintendo could be less concerned with catering to the casual crowd with these titles. The ultimate game is something that appeals to both casual and hardcore gamers (see Blizzard), so maybe Nintendo wants to get back in contact with those that want more of a challenge.

The Super Guide should theoretically allow Nintendo to do so, giving the company the ability to create challenging games that can also be appreciated by casual gamers who might not be able to get the hang of more complex gameplay aspects, such as the whole spherical worlds thing. It does seem like it would be harder to program the Super Guide for Galaxy 2 than it was for New Super Mario Bros. Wii, what with the addition of the third dimension and all, but I'm sure Nintendo is up to the task.

Cue flaming and hate on casual gamers.

In before aforementioned flaming, i must say. GUYS! Gaming is a hobby! And some people do not want to invest too much time in it. We should probably accept it as it is - not everyone has 8 hours to spend in front of a monitor. Some people have loads of things to do in real life, yet they still want to enjoy gaming. Extra-easy difficulty can't really hurt them. Or us, for that matter - just pick "harder than hard" level, you nerds.

Only problem that could posssibly be with this is absence of harder modes - but they're still there. Nothing to worry about.

Eh, I've got no issue with this - same as the "One Handed Play" feature of Bayonetta or the Super Guide for NSMBW. As long as it's not a binary switch (Impossible without, pitifully easy with) there's no problem.

Let the 'casual gamers' (and I do so love that ambiguous term) have their easy mode as long as there's still a challenge left in it for those who choose not to.

If you only play for unlockables/achievements I feel sorry for you.

What about the fun of challenging yourself?

Notice how the source article doesn't even once have the word "casual" in it?

You may come to your own conclusions, since I've already danced around the topic of the industry's idiotic usage of the "casual gamer" term a few times too many.

Why does someone else's opinion diminish getting every star manually as a personal achievement for you? Are you that desperate for the approval of others?

Whatever happened to just being able to choose a "difficulty setting" at the beginning of the game? How come we have to fit ourselves into these little categories? Why not just make the games fun and awesome and accessible to all (like they did with most of the previous generations) and just focus on making the games awesome?

Questions, questions, questions...

The proverbial "I Win" button has finally come! Just think about the 8-12 years olds playing this game! this is for them.

Its because everyone must be sheltered from frustration and challenges. XD

I don't hate this idea, but isn't this what we used to use cheat codes for?
but dude this is an option anyways you do not have to use it XD
But i do want my cheat codes back :( those use to give me games legs. one time playing the game properly and many others using cheats to goof around!

That mariohead-planet is terrifying... MAKE IT GO AWAY!!

Honestly, this super guide thing seems like it shouldn't have any affect on hardcore gaming. It will simply add "and I never used super guide" to the end of all claims relating to the game. It's not as bad as using an emulator and braid-style rewinding after each error.

Why not just start putting it in all new Wii games (well except for mini game collections and other genres where it just wouldn't work like rpgs)? Who are they to say what game is too difficult and what game isn't. Some games that everyone claims is easy I have found extremely difficult while other games that everyone claims will rape you I breezed through. We all have different skill sets.

Eons ago, I was predicting that the Super Guide would lead to MORE challenging games, not LESS challenging ones. Looks like I was right.

Yeah, I have no problem with this. I mean, hey, harder games, right? I can't remember the last time I played a hard Nintendo game...

Wow, I'm not sure what to make of this.
I guess it's an option but still... If you can't mentally work out a Mario game then you've got more things to worry about in life than not being able to reach that Star at the top of Marios Head.

They could add a sort of statistics in the game, like in KH2. So it shows how many times you've used Super Guide.
