Lightning Shows Some Leg in Final Fantasy XIII Box Art

Square-Enix has pulled the veil off the PAL box art for Final Fantasy XIII, and it's unclear which is weirder: Leading lady Lightning's decision to show off her thigh, or the Final Fantasy and Xbox 360 logos next to each other.

As members of our community have pointed out (repeatedly), it's true that the quality of a game's box art has exactly jack diddly to do with the quality of the game. Still, it's always a fun little discussion to talk about a less-informed audience [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/96211-2K-Games-Reveals-BioShock-2-Box-Art].

Square-Enix has revealed the European box art to this March's Final Fantasy XIII, and in contrast to the previously mentioned Mass Effect 2 and BioShock 2 box art, it's rather understated. It's simply the game's protagonist Lightning on a featureless white background, showing the skin of her thigh oddly prominently and holding a sword that must have given some poor 3D-modeler an aneurysm.

It's understated, yes, but I'm not sure I like it. Don't get me wrong, I'm in favor of clean, less crowded and chaotic box art - the Japanese art for ICO [http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3436/3240505606_a2976ac07c.jpg] is one of my all-time favorites - but this one doesn't grab me at all, and I'm honestly not sure why. Maybe a different background would have helped.

Maybe it's just the choice of image: While a bit of (admittedly light) poking around the Internet didn't turn up anything 100% official for either the North American or Japanese box art, I did find a potential placeholder [http://i37.tinypic.com/2ilc5sx.jpg] for the Japanese version featuring Lightning atop Sleipnir, the mount of Norse god (and recurring Final Fantasy entity) Odin. I find it significantly more visually appealing, personally.

It's also very strange to see art from a Final Fantasy game bordered by the familiar green of the Xbox 360 logo. The PS3 version has the same cover [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/images/view/61064], it's just squashed (and Lightning's thigh is covered by the rating) since, y'know, the case is smaller. Granted, the 360 version will probably need a larger case to hold the fifteen discs that the game will undoubtedly come on.

One can't help but wonder if the North American art will continue the simplistic, understated trend, or if they'll have to dig out an action shot of Lightning being a gritty badass.

I had a cat called Lightning, she got hit by a car and died.

Random Amnestic History Fact for the day.

Not quite sure why the thigh is necessary, but then it's not terribly unnecessary either. Looking up at my copies of FFX and FFXII, the cover art is divergent in that it's actually got in game graphics on the front, but still the same "artpiece+whitebackground+logo" setup.

Looking at that, this one isn't so bad.

Hmm, it could of been better yes but a lot of crazy Japanese Hentai fans will buy it just to look at the cover. >_>
It looks OK atleast.

Personally, I'm wondering why there's a picture of Lightning on the cover at all. All the previous main titles (at least in Europe, anyway) have just put the logo on the front and nothing else, and I really liked that. Why have they decided to change that now?

i like the clean simple cover. I have always liked it when things were simple like that, personally, just the title on a white background would have suited me. Perhaps a nifty little symbol or something.

but i haven't played a final fantasy game in years and i don't intend to change that anytime soon. FF1 is my all time favorite, and it will take more than a white background and a sexy upper thigh to change my mind.

Meh, its an ok cover. Not bad but not great.

Don't get me wrong I still want to play the game.
Same.

The cover serves it purpose, its clean, simple, and not cluttered.

Could be anything really and I would still buy it. More the brand for me than the cover art.

oooo, some animated leg i reckon i'm going to get my anime self handshake on...

does it actually matter that we see some leg, i thought we passed the whole victorian no bare skin mentality? (though according to QI that was actually an american thing, you have all been educated by the Fry)

EDIT: I simply miss the old design with just a logo, they where always good and interesting. I miss squall :(

Eh, the leg is kind of weird, but Final Fantasy usually handles fanservice well: not too much, not too little.

And no. An action shot would be too cliche. I think the understated, simple look is fitting for a game as complex, intricate, and emotional as Final Fantasy.

She has a little captain in her.
Nice, exactly what I was thinking!

Also, if you hadn't focused on the leg so much in speaking about it, I probably wouldn't have taken much notice of it (considering how much skin is shown in video games). To me, my eye is drawn to the sword.

It's not as bad as FFX-2, especially the little booklet that came with it. Yuna needed some proper shorts...

Otherwise box art is alright, but I prefer FF's no game graphics, just the designs around the title and use of white space.

It makes me sad that I opted for a wii though, and thus will never be able to play this :(

At least there's a kernel of truth in their advertising.

"In this game you will wield a sword that is not-a-sword. Also you won't be wearing pants."
