I don't get why most of your 360s die. Mine is going strong since I got it (2 years ago) and no problems bad enough to send it back. Given I did have Oblivion crashing on me once or twice and apart from a couple times when the thing just wouldn't read the game disc it's all good.

I also have it standing up but it still never fried on me. I do give it plenty of space though, and it doesn't get hot in the summer where it's standing.

I have question. If my 360 get's a red ring, can I just buy an arcade version and use the hard drive on it?

What do you mean? If you mean get another Xbox and use that with your old hard drive then no, not without connecting to the net. DRM restrictions won't let you play your downloads on any console/hard drive combo except the original used to DL, unless you log into Xbox live.

This was my initial thought actually. Unless you live some where stupid hot, you shouldn't have a problem if it isn't backed up into a tiny TV cabinet.

Have had no problems whatsoever with my xbox bought at release so far and its been upright the whole time. It sits upright on my desk in a gap of about 11cm each side from my ps2 and my TV and about an 8cm gap if that from my wall; it has been subjected to whole days (12 hours+?) of being left on (days off and friends coming round). One reason might be my desk has some sort of surface on top that looks like tiles but isn't (the word for it escapes me but begins with an "l") and this surface seems to stay cool and probably acts as a heat sink.

Turn it off at the wall when you not using it. I've been doing this for the 2 years I've had mine and I've never had red lights. Maybe its just luck but still, its worth doing.

I gave mine a open air stand all to itself.
(Because of the over heating issue since I play a lot.)

Now I think it was called Pelican fan stand I have.
(Not the Intercooler Fan, this one is different it fans from the bottom, which means you cant have it laying down.)

Never had any problems, and when I play I usually put many consecutive hours on it without a problem.

BTW, this is just from friends but, all my friends who got a 360 IRL (About 14) all got a intercooler. Except me, my sister got me the pelican stand. (Thanks Sis)

Two years later, I'm the only one not to suffer from the RRoD out of the group.

Weld a metal elevated grill to put the 360 on so the 360 can breathe from all angles. Note: Do not weld the grill to the 360.
did you really do this?

My xbox will probably get fucked soon then, it's in a drawer with no ventilation and sometimes i forget about it and it gets left on overnight; come morning i open the drawer and get a cloud of hot air hitting my face..

Hot, lighter air goes up. Cold, denser air drops. Right?

Right, however if you have something cool on both sides then once the power supply itself is cooler that would help by making it so that you were not getting temperature loss. Kind of like Insulation to keep the power supply section of the case cooler overall. Granted the one under is key but both would be a bit better

Solution to all X-Box 360 issues - Switch to Atari 2600!

If, however, you feel for some incomprehensible reason that the former suggestion does not quite suit you, you might try searching for an old fashioned milk crate...

IE - http://www.advantagegrip.com/2008%20Images/milk_crate.gif

...Place your system on top of this and airflow will be nominal from all sides at all times unless you decide to cover all ventilation for some unknown reason. Beyond that, try stopping the disc before ejecting it to avoid possible laser damage. Also note that for some reason the 360 breaks faster when it's carted around to LAN parties. Solution - Host LANs as opposed to joining them. you can even get free food out of this if you insist that your guests bring drinks and snacks but I digress.

Lastly, be sure to read your warranty (you did purchase one, right) and don't do anything that would void the aforementioned agreement.

Just keep it well ventilated and on its long side. When it's upright it also scratches games a lot more as well as blocking the floor. Every other week, WD-40 it up too. The dust can cause some traumas if you're not careful.

Nyko intercoolers are notorious for decreasing the lifespan of your 360 - just reading the search headlines should raise all sorts of flags and alarms for the consumer who is contemplating a purchase.

You are a) extremely lucky your 360 has survived this long, and b) should not store any heat-generating electronic components in such harsh conditions - that includes the Wii, PS3 or computer. All electronics should be used in properly ventilated areas.

Buy a mini-fridge, and stick your 360 inside of it.
