Some of my favorites are Bio Shock, Mass Effect, and Left 4 Dead. However, it really depends on what games you like. What is your favorite genre? People could help you a bit more if you gave some more specifics.

Go and check best games.

Or metacritic, even better as it's the most objective thing on the net.

Assassins Creed is alright, especially if you like sneaking.
Condemned: Criminal Origins is awesome if you like suspense and bashing the shit out of Hobos.
Mass Effect for sure. It's cheap now! $20 at Sprawl Mart.
Prey is worth the $15 you can nab a good copy for used. Don't pay more than that though.

MASS EFFECT
Couldn't have said it better myself.

Also, in addition to the things others have said, you could get a good deal of Xbox original games, provided you can connect to live to download the backward compatibility update (note: this can be done with a silver account so, assuming you can connect it, it is free). If you're going to do that, I recommend the first 2 halos and the first 3 Splinter Cells (SC isn't xbox exclusive, though, so you can get that elsewhere).

I've just finished Halo 3 and found it to be tremendous fun, and truly epic. Cheap as chips these days, too. GTA4 ain't half bad; BioShock is pretty much the best game ever made; The Orange Box will keep you entertained for the next three or four centuries; and Left 4 Dead might just convince you to pay for Live - it's that good.

I would reckomend SaintRow 2 for its fun gameplay and the way it keeps you in the story beginning to end. With lots of fun sandbox play to allow you to mess up the city in your very own unique way!

If you're not going to get Live, then don't get Left 4 Dead or Halo 3, since 90+% of the value of both of those games comes from playing them online. Actually that's sorta a lie. If you have friends come over to play often, get Halo 3, since it's still the best local multiplayer shooter out there right now. Left 4 Dead also has split screen, but only two players, so if you're that against paying for Live, I wouldn't get it.

If you want good single player games, I'd say Mass Effect or Assassin's Creed. I don't really want to assume, but since you don't have CoD4 on 360, and have a PS3, I'm going to assume that you have CoD4 for your PS3. If you don't, then get it. Now. For either platform.

i would recoment seeling the xbox 360 to buy games for the ps3 (joke)
Oblivion is your best bet, i know you can buy it on the PS3 aswell but play it on the console it was intended to be played on (not including the PC as a console because we all know gaming is better with a mouse and keyboard).

It's a good time to pick up the first Mass effect too, that way you should have plenty of time to play through various times to get the story going the way you like it to ( and max out shep's level) and have a nice save list ready for ME2....

though I dont know if they will have it ready for a holiday release, but I doubt we will wait longer than march-madness-2010 for it.

I loved Assassins creed, but to be honest it was one of those that I could only play once...now Im getting fidgety waiting for info on 2..

Unless you've already got it on PC, definately get the Orange Box. Team Fortress 2 is online only, true, but it doesn't really matter seing as Half-Life 2 + expansions and Portal are well worth the price by themselves.
