You could back up the data yourself, right? It's basically a standard laptop HDD, right?
... not quite. The 360 drive uses a proprietary case and connector, so it'd take a bit of kludging to get it to talk to an external drive. (I suspect that Devkits would have some sort of interface cable, but as far as I know those aren't available to us consumers.)

We have the interface cables for our devs, but like everything else that comes in a devkit's box, I believe it only works with a devkit. You can spot a devkit by it's matte black casing and the huge bit of unremovable tech where the HHD should be.

Right. My 360 RRODed yesterday, after one year. I'm actually kind of proud of it, since it's a first-generation 360, the ones that supposedly die within three seconds (mine's a fighter, hah!).
My first one was a fucking quiter. Less than 24 hours after purchase (Crappy launch model).

But anyway, I sent an email over to Microsoft, and they sent me my shipping tag, blah blah blah. I took my console to the post office today, and sent it away. I come home, and check my email, and I see a nice little email from Microsoft (one that I should have recieved several hours before). I learn that I wasn't supposed to send my hardrive along with the 360, as it is an accessory and accesories cannot be returned. I'm not too miffed, as it was only a anorexic 20GB one, but I'm a little worried about my game data.

So, my question: If Microsoft takes away my hardrive or replaces my 360 completely, will there be some way to regain my game data/gamertag from online? I won't be too mad with losing my old game data (I was considering trading in all my old games anyway) but I'd rather like to keep my gamertag. It's Ego Own Vos, and I think it's a very nice tag. Thank you in advance.
Mine was also a launch (or near launch) Xbox and it has lasted me up until a couple of days ago. I've heard the number of RROD has increased with the new xbox dashboard. I would be inclined to agree with this theory since mine has had absolutely no problem until a couple of weeks after the NXE. Has anyone else heard of this?

Not really, as has been said in the post under yours it would take some fiddiling to get it to work with other HDD. But i know that you can get a transfer cable if you have an elite pack or if you buy a 120GB HDD it will come with one. If you put the data onto another drive with that, you would be able to keep it.

To echo the others here, you could recover your gamertag and downloaded stuff (maps, arcade games etc) from the Xbox Live Dashboard, but your saves are pretty much gone unless you got a friend in the Microsoft repair department.

Also, sorry it died. Hope you have better luck with your new one =)

sooo microsoft steals your HDD if you accidentally send it them??
I believe that (if it's in good condition) Microsoft refurbishes the HDD, wipes all the data, re-installs the OS and packages it with a new 360. I may be wrong though.
