Over the last few days I have been noticing that the black power brick's fan keeps going after the machine has been switched off. I'm not talking an extra few minutes to cool down either, I'm talking hearing a whizzing, whirring noise coming from it all day long along with the light staying on.

Anyone else experiencing this and is it normal?

I had this problem with my 360 pro. Do you have a power pack with a green light on when it's playing?

If you are downloading something and shut the Xbox off, the Xbox will continue to operate until the download is done.

I haven't had that happen, and I've had mine for almost exactly a year. That kind of reminds me of the sound it makes when I have the controller cable connected while the console is off, though.

I did a Google search to see if I could find people with similar issues, but didn't see much worth mentioning. Maybe it's best to unplug the console for the time being while you're not using it and try to contact Xbox support.

I'm not downloading anything, but good suggestion all the same.

I think you just solved my issue.

Back when I had a 360, I remember that you could shut the console and leave it in "stand-by" while downloading something and then it shuts down all by itself when finished, quite handy I might add.

If you're getting a little concerned by that, just unplug the console/power brick until the next time you'll use it.

Oooh, a nifty +1 Helpfulness for me.

That sound has bugged me many nights. And I've stupidly and groggily yanked the cable out, then I wake up the next morning and find my 360 teetering on the edge of my dresser.

ha! Glad it didn't fall. Buy a new console that can't Red Ring and smash it... wouldn't be fun.

Thanks for solving!

This usually happens when I leave the 'play & charge' thingy plugged in, although I'm still using a Pro edition.

Haha yeah it took me a while to figure this out to.

But yeah, just disconnect the controller cable and plug it back in.
