360 Update Incident

My 360 just updated itself and for some reason my gamerscore and achievements have been reset to an earlier point. My save games are still intact but for some reason the achievements that correspond to them are not. For example, I have a career of level 60 characters in Mass Effect still entirely playable, but no level 60 achievement to go with it, and the list goes on. All but one of my GTA IV achievements are wiped out.

On the plus side, it's erased all record of Project Sylpheed (boo, hiss) from my system, but that still doesn't excuse the fact that I'm going to have to work back all the achievements I earned legitimately. Surely there should be some way to rebuild the achievements list based on saved game data?

There's no technical problem with it, in fact it's been entirely hassle free, so no need to be sarky. I'm just asking if anyone has managed to recover their achievement list somehow using a saved game as the basis after a similar online/offline disparity. My fault entirely for not backing up my profile to a memory card, but surely if the saved games still exist on the hard drive, the achievments that correspond to them should be recoverable.

Compared to the PS3, which had a recent update that caused quite a few of them to stop working altogether.

To the original poster, the update isn't actually supposed to change anything, as it's just groundwork for the next major update. I know that probably doesn't help, but I just wanted to let you know in case you didn't. Actually, this whole incident confuses me, seeing as how achievements are incredibly permenant...

Actually, the only way I know that they can be removed is if you cheated to get them by using someone else's save file or something.

I've heard of this before, and I don't think theres anything you can do about it i'm afraid. Although...they're only achievements, surely not that important?

On the one hand, I might actually relish the prospect of earning back some level 60 characters from scratch as it would alleviate some boredom, but on the other hand it's just an annoyance that I can be playing with previous level 60s and not have the badge for it.

The problem was I hadn't signed into Live for a while, and when the system updated it did so with my last known online profile with the lower gamerscore. So again, my fault, could've backed up to a memory card but forgot. Just wondered if anyone had the same issue and solved it.

Meh. Now I know better.

And also know not to put "360" in a thread title since it's akin to waving a red flag at fanboys.

When I saw the title, I thought it was a typo and was meant to say "PS3 update Incident".

I may love my PS3, but these updates are getting out of hand >_>;
