EA Announces Dead Space 2

Electronic Arts [http://www.ea.com] has made it official: Dead Space 2 is on the way.

After Dead Space [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/96570-Dead-Space-2-Teased-With-Ink-Blots] with a Rorschach blot and some Unitology script over the weekend, EA confirmed today that Dead Space 2 is in the works. The new game will feature the return of Isaac Clarke, the hero of the original, as he meets news characters and employs new tools to slice and dice the Necromorph onslaught. "Survival isn't the only thing on Isaac's mind in Dead Space 2," the publisher said. "This time, he calls the shots."

"The infection continues to spread throughout space and our hero Isaac Clarke is the only person able to contain it. There are still loads of Necromorphs that need killing!" said Dead Space 2 Executive Producer Steve Papoutsis. "In Dead Space 2, not everything is exactly as it seems. Expect plot twists that will surprise you and a huge cast of twisted, disgusting monsters that are sure to scare the daylights out of you."

I'm not sure how I feel about the apparent "Rambofication" of the intrepid Mr. Clarke in the new game, but it's way too early to get worked up over that. At this point, I'm just happy to hear that the saga will continue. Dead Space 2 is currently in development at Visceral Games for the PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. No release date has been announced.

I'm happy it's under development but I have to agree with OP here: Why is Isaac the "only one who can stop them"? He's just an engineer for Pete's sake. At least in the first game everyone else got killed on that ship so you were the only one who could fix stuff around the ship and you were trying to get the hell out of there with all of your own limbs intact.

I didn't exactly feel like I became the Necromorph killing specialist by getting away from that ship. If Isaac is going to be something like the Master Chief of Dead Space I'm afraid the game is going to lose some of its appeal.

That being said: Yay Dead Space! :D

I think they are going for the whole Gordon Freeman nostalgia type of thing...

No, everyone did not die. Two other people were alive...they just made you do all the heavy lifting :p

If Isaac goes commando in Dead Space 2, a decent chunk of atmosphere and suspense will fly out of the airlock. But on the other hand, "calling the shots" does not neccesarily mean "being an unstoppable decapitation machine". Maybe it's just that he knows a bit more about Necromorphs, knows what to anticipate. Maybe you'll be kinda like Hammond this time around.

Why's that, exactly? I'm pretty sure he's just an engineer.

Well, the thing is, in the first Dead Space you already basically are the only one that can stop them. Out of the entire crews of the Kellion, Ishimura, and the military ship,
you are the only one that survives
It's much like why modern armies are usually swamped by zombies in books and movies, you spend you're whole career life training to shoot center mass, it isn't easy to land a head shot or a dismembering shot. Isaac, having only experienced life with a weapon by using them to dismember the necromorphs is already far better off when it comes to killing the morphs then most of the elite marines in the game.

Agreed.

I know they didn't die. And yes they let you do all the heavy lifting because you were the suited up engineer who 'knows' how to fix stuff (and also wouldn't die instantly in vacuums since you had the pressure suit on). Basically everyone else still got incapacitated from doing the work that needed to be done to survive. Also you were the only one who took off in the end anyway.

Yes, that does sound logical...

Still wouldn't it be more efficient to train these space marines in aiming for the extremities rather than to send one guy out there who -and I'm assuming- has never before killed anyone before the events that took place in the Ishimura? It makes sense to send Isaac out there alone again from an atmospheric point of view (there's nothing scary about facing aliens with 5 other guys right behind you), but from a strategic point of view it doesn't make sense.

Now if they would make it so that Isaac would be stuck somewhere again, completely alone except for when he gets to a comm. station or something so he can communicate very briefly with his superiors to find out what to do next I can get behind that a lot faster than an engineer being dropped off somewhere Halo-style to kill Necromorphs only to be picked up after.

All I'm saying is that when they say "Isaac calls the shots" it sounds like he won't be stranded somewhere facing extremely high odds of death (which is what kind of set the mood for the first game). He would rather be shooting it up in an area comparable to The Parish in Left 4 Dead 2, which sounds a hell of a lot less scary to me.

I hope I'm wrong and they find a way to make the sequel a lot more frightening than its predecessor. Something along the lines of he does get dropped in some desolate area filled with Necromorphs only to be picked up after, but he just doesn't get picked up. :p

Here's hoping the people responsible for the awesome bits of the first game weren't part of the recent layoffs. Because ... you know ... that's NEVER happened in the game industry ...

God, why did they have to use that line? Isn't Clarke just a glorified space mechanic? How is he the "only one who can stop it?" Isn't there a Space CDC or something?

I'm still convinced that the ink bolts are the outlines of the most common monsters in the first game. Standard guy on top, demon baby in the middle and one of those guys with a tail instead of legs on the bottom.

well i can't wait for this one, should be as good as the first one. tho i don't think the "calling all the shots" means it's going to be totally different from the first one

What about where his dead girlfriend attacks him at the end? Just some psychological trauma from everything he's been through?
