Next thing you know we'll come up with an engine that lets us make the Kessel run in less than 9 parsecs.
It's 12! 12 Parsecs! Not 9!
But I do appreciate the reference.
Oh I know the real reference. I was suggesting that technology would become even more advanced than the Millennium Falcon.

Parsecs are a distance, not time length. (/pedant)
Actually, Han Solo isn't talking about speed when he says that. He's talking about distance. The Kessel Run was a major 'highway' (If you will) for the Empire. He was able to cut a few corners by flying between black holes, thus shortening the distance required to make the run. Hence: 12 Parsecs.

This is hardly a suprise. After all, the kinect + the 3DS = manipulable holographic images.

That doesn't make it any less cool mind you.

Well those are all neat wishes, but nowhere is it described how it actually works, if it works at all.

"If you take the screen and lay it flat, it projects the holographic object around your device, and you can interact with it," - ya that statement makes no sense outside the realm of magic, so can anyone guess what they mean?
Yeah that statement doesn't really give you a clear image of how exactly it can be "interacted with" for all we know they mean "If something gets in the way of the hologram the device will know" and that's it, for all we know they are simply talking about a single true false value for "image blocked" or "image not blocked" and are trying to make it sound like the omni tool interface in Mass Effect.
if it was anything like mass effect (or avatar for that matter)

then holy poop, screw college, sign me up for one of those!

The news is misinterpreted. They are not creating holograms, just a screen with 3D image without glasses, just like the Nintendo 3DS. Google the company, see their interviews.

I cannot believe the Escapist just made such a huge error in their reporting!

This sounds great but im gonna need to see a video before i beleive it. Its sounds alot like the holographic design table in the first Ironman movie.
I was thinking that, but this means I can be Tony Stark if I get captured by terrorists.

Still, this is impressive, I wonder how my music production will change with this!

Dont blame the site blame the person. Come to think about it if we did have the technology to do what else could the companys be hiding that make TV's .

The kind of technology he's hoping you think he's describing does not exist yet and he is not working on it.

There won't be a hologram visible and floating over the phone because there isn't any reflective medium above the phone from which a 3d image could be reflected when projected. There's nothing there to reflect light, and that just can't be changed. It might have a flip-out screen or similar to reflect from but that will have a limited viewing angle and a very poor field of vision and will overall be pretty disappointing to behold.

Holograms in general are pretty disappointing once the novelty wears off since after a short while their abundant shortcomings are pretty obvious.

The whole thing is made up.
It's a movie.

Why does everyone have to be a Debbie Downer? Geez.

But still no damn hover car!?!?! Or personal jetpacks? Or robot butlers? I'm sure though once that technology could be applied to a fucking apple product those lazy scientist will get down to making one.

Anyways, nice to know that we might be getting holograms. I predict porn for it the day after it goes commercial.

prediction: nanoprojector + yet another miniature camera mounted on the same side as it = this.

options:
1. IR projection and sensing elements (a la kinect, and probably having to be licensed from MS - let's see how Apple get on with that idea) and/or
2a. LCD shutter-glasses OR 2b. two nanoprojectors with clockwise/anticlock polarising filters, plus a set of matching polarising glasses

hello 3D projection and environment/user sensing, using NO novel technology

... because if I had something so groundbreaking as an ACTUAL HOLOGRAM PROJECTOR, the FIRST thing I would do with it is integrate it into a sodding smartphone so people can play 99-cent app store games with it.
And not, like, make a large one to set up quietly in a shopping mall and use to mess with people's heads.
