So, I recently finished putting together a new PC, and I'm now picking out monitors. I decided that 3D sounded pretty cool, and it'd be a neat way to test out my new GTX 580. I've order a monitor that come with the Nvision bundle, and I'm still waiting for it arrive. I thought this was a good move cause everything seems to be slowly changing over to 3D, but then I ran across this forum http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/18.273036-Poll-Thoughts-on-3D-movies and it seems that the general opinion is that 3D in general is about as well received as motion controls. It sucks... I mean, my mind is set, I'm going to give 3D a try, but I was curious as to what you guys think about 3D PCs here at the escapists.

EDIT: those interested, http://www.amazon.com/VG236H-23-Inch-Monitor-nVidia-Vision/dp/B003V4AK2K thats the monitor I order, and its relative price.

Not that I'm annoyed, but I feel this thread is missing the point, I'm not so much concerned as to whether or not I should get it, cause thats a done deal, but what your opinion is on 3D PC gaming. Not really a complaint, cause most are giving their opinion, just a way of clarifying.

I'll let you decide. The only reason I'd say no is because I can't afford one. I think a 3D monitor is unnecessary, but then again I can't afford one, so I wouldn't know.

I want to hear your invidual thought once you've gotten it.
Also.. Your avatar reminds me of my wolf hybrid I once had.
It could be awhile, I mean, I get the monitor on the 30th, but I won't get all the different stuff I need to actually use the computer till like the 4th, at the earliest, but not later than the 9th. But if you're really interested in a review, I'll do one using Metro 2033 when I can, and I'll post a link on this thread, sound good?

I'm personally perfectly happy with just enhancing 2d graphics, the way it has been going (sort of)

If you want it, go for it. I highly, highly doubt it'll be the next evolution of PC, but as a gimmick it's something you can just grab as a curiosity. Expensive I presume, but hey, it's your money.

I personally am uninterested though.

Ahh, that sounds good.
Or you could always write a short user-review about it.
Feel free to PM me once you've done this.
Yeah, I guess I wasn't clear, I was going to put it in the user review section, but put the link to that in here, and I'll PM you aswell.

If you like that sort of thing why not go for it, especially when you are buying new stuff it's the perfect chance to see what's what.

I'm not a fan personally, apart from a bad picture and headaches it doesn't seem to add anything to the experience.

I think if it was done well, there is potential for 3D as a gimmick, but it very rarely is, and is often adopted more as a money maker than an actual artistic direction. Given that, and the irritation that is 3D gaming (for anything other than the 3DS titles), then I wouldn't recommend bothering doing it toy your PC.

If I had an Nvidia card, I'd get their proprietary 3D system...wish I'd known that ATI simply weren't bothering whilst I was card shopping.

Don't listen to the haters. 3D implimentation in films hasn't been great thus far(though there is potential) but 3D gaming shouldn't be lumped in with it. I have a 3D television, and some 3rd party drivers, and what's achievable can be pretty great. Arkham Asylum, Black-Ops and NBA 2k11 all looked superb.

Enjoy your new gear.

3D PC gaming.
In games? Presently a massive waste of time.

It suffers from card cut-out syndrome (imagine the crappy 3-D conversions on some films) and a loss of clarity at the moment. Skipping/tearing sems to be a problem as well.

Given more time it'll probably get better, but right now you pay a lot and go through a lot of complication for something that's not actually very good. 2-D on higher settings will yield more enjoyment for the moment.

One thing thats confusing me, most of you seem to act that as if you go to 3D, you can't go back. You can, and as a matter of fact if you have stuff that support 3D the 2D stuff is in a higher quality.

I think this 3D craze is just going to pass, like it did last time. In other words: no. It's a waste.
Should have gotten a better 2D monitor instead. But oh well. Hope you like it.

NO! DON'T DO IT!!!
I think you mean: ITS A TRAAAAP!

Ahem.

Personally, I don't see much worth in it, and the only game I've heard of that's really good in 3D is Crysis 2.

But - if you've got that much excess cash to spare - its up to you.

As a person who actually owns nvidia's 3dVision system, I enjoy 3D gaming quite a bit. Like you, I have a gtx 580, and it really gets the job done when rendering for 3d. The effectiveness varies from game to game; when you start a game, a small window will pop up in the corner, giving a rating for the game's "3d-ness", as well as some specific tips for adjusting to optimal settings. The games that announce that they're "3dVision ready", are usually most effective at using the technology (unsurprisingly), such as Just Cause 2, Batman: AA, etc.

The main problem I've found with trying to play games that weren't designed for the system is the reticle for shooters and such; with the 3d ready games, the reticle adjusts with the depth of the object it's resting on, whereas in standard games it has a tendency to stay 2d, which can get annoying after a while. RTS's can be fun, since the health bars, UI and such will stay in the foreground, while the actual game will feel nearly like a diorama (an odd comparison, I know, but it's the best I can think of at the moment).

Turning off the 3d is as simple as hitting a button on the IR dongle provided; I still play 70% of PC games in 2d, so being able to turn it on/off on the fly is pretty nice. The glasses are comfortable, and can fit (relatively) well over normal glasses; extended use can get a bit dizzying, but since you can turn it off at any time, giving your eyes a chance to rest is easy.

TL;DR: If you've got the money, and are willing to take a shot, go for it. If you already have a decent 60 Hz double/triple monitor setup (which I didn't), and feel comfortable with the hardware you have, it's probably not worth a swap out of hardware.

I thought you need a 120Hz... and why more then one monitor?

Tell you what, since you are aware of a monitor thats better than the one I posted, and is around the same price, and it only supports 2D, care to supply the link? I'd be damn interested in it.

What I meant to say was that you shouldn't get a new monitor just for 3d gaming if you already have more than one regular monitor. I was in the market for a second monitor to begin with, and that's what led me to buy the system in the first place.

As for having more than one monitor, I'm sure others with multi-monitor setups will agree with me that it's worth it, even if the second/third monitor is crap; sure, you only game on one, but having that additional screen space is lovely.

OH, ok... yeah, but you see, I don't have another monitor, for I am on a laptop right now, so that monitor I'm getting will actually be my first. My dad has a few spares... but most are those huge old clunkers....

3D movies makes my eyes and head hurt, and blood spewing from my ears...

Well, maybe not blood coming out of my ears, but you get the point. My eyes hurt so much, i couldn't drive home from the cinema after seeing Avatar, so i can't imagine actually playing a game in 3D.

I should mention, that i normally do _not_ have any trouble with my eyes hurting.
