3D movies makes my eyes and head hurt, and blood spewing from my ears...

Well, maybe not blood coming out of my ears, but you get the point. My eyes hurt so much, i couldn't drive home from the cinema after seeing Avatar, so i can't imagine actually playing a game in 3D.

I should mention, that i normally do _not_ have any trouble with my eyes hurting.
Yeah, I've heard about that stuff, bad deal. I curious if you get that from the 3DS kind of 3D. I don't have your problem, but I feel for you. In your case, I hope they come up with a way for you to enjoy 3D without the pain.

I think it could be cool. I hear Mirror's edge is a great game to play in 3-d. I am curious to hear your impression when it arrives.

...it seems that the general opinion is that 3D in general is about as well received as motion controls. ... my mind is set, I'm going to give 3D a try, but I was curious as to what you guys think about 3D PCs here at the escapists. ... I'm not so much concerned as to whether or not I should get it, cause thats a done deal, but what your opinion is on 3D PC gaming.
Snow, I do respect your intention to use "cutting edge" technology.

However, I am going to predict that 3D implementation in new games is going to largely incidental for the next two years.

[I have not seen 3D PC graphics implemented, but neither am I directly criticizing the implementation. Having been asked for an opinion, its is: ]

I can't possibly fix a date to it, but I remember when PC games started putting "fantastic 3D environments" into new games. The one that stands out in my head right now was a Guild Wars Demo. Yeah, there were lots of hills, and yeah they looked pretty good compared to 'conventional' environments, but that innovation often served no purpose. There were hills because they could make hills, and not because they added anything to gameplay. I'm not saying they *never* added anything to gameplay, just that the steeply sloping hills were largely irrelevant. I'm fairly sure that a major use was to obscure the player's line of sight.

Fast forward a few years. The terrain in Fallout 3 was absolutely bleak and desolate. Any serious exploration meant scrabbling over rocks and hills. This added to immersion, and ultimately contributed to one of the game's big payoff sequences. Finally some developers have learned to make terrain a supporting player in the saga, rather than gratuitous window dressing.

Again, I haven't been paying attention to new technologies. I haven't been paying attention to new games either; new games are WAY too expensive, there are plenty of old titles to keep me entertained. So, without looking to see what's in development, or being offered right now, here is a list of games that I expect to see for the new 3D technology within the next 18 months:

Super Mario 3D (no surprise there)
Sonic the Hedgehog 3D
Metal Gear Something or other 3D
Splinter Cell 3D (Sam takes revenge on the Splinter Cell developers)
Modern Warfare 3(D)
Call of Duty 5
Wolfenstein (really) 3-D (I'd rather see this as an experiment before DOOM 3D)

Since I've already seen Yahtzee's review of Gears of War 3(D), its not hard to imagine 3D being used as an excuse for rushed-out 3D versions of existing game franchises.

When will I start paying attention to 3D games? 'Amnesia: the Dark Descent' was an innovative title that made an interesting use of ... uh ... I guess I have to call it 'perceived 3D'. [If you haven't played the game, try the demo or you won't know what I mean.] When developers are comfortable enough with 3D technology to do that manner of rendering, then I'm going to take a hard look at 3D hardware.

... or if S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 is in 3D. I have weaknesses too.

You know, you can run S.T.A.L.K.E.R. in 3D? See, the 3D by Nvidia (The one I'm getting) has some level of backwards compatibility. When you do this, you lose some of the graphical flair, and it has an occasional hick-up, but its completely possible. So... Games wont be made specifically for 3D (though, some will) so... while your point is valid, its somewhat one sided... Also, I fairly certain that Amnesia will work in 3D, but when I get everything assembled, I'll give it a shot..

Edit: TBH, Stalker in 3d was one of the major factors of me getting the 3D... I was thinking, "My god... the IMMERSION!"

Ech. My eyes are bad enough from this infernal machine as it is. I'm not about to buy one that will do it faster.

I give you kudos. Now granted I am usually the one as it relates to PC hardware preaching how less is more. But the fact is you had the money, you bought it. Then good, use it.

I will have a similar fund relatively soon and will be building a fairly high end rig with its focus being on a tri monitor display with the center monitor being 3d capable. If you have the money to blow on it, and its something you want to do, then do it.

Plus.. Minecraft has some level of 3d capability, so thats enough justification right there ;)

It's not something I'm really interested in. If it comes as standard at a reasonable price on laptops at some point in the future, I might get it.

Ech... Where did you hear it'll damage your eyes? That kinda scares me, as I want to be a pilot...

Ah, yeah, but its a different kind, you can do it on standard monitor, you just need a set of red blue glasses.

Basically it forces your eyes to see perspective in a different way, causing you to feel fatigued, get headaches, and have blurry vision for a while afterward. It doesn't say it in this article, but I also heard somewhere else that over time it can be damaging to your eyes in the same way that sitting in front of a screen at very close range is damaging.

Oh, but I never had that problem before....

and, well, your going to get that damage anyway from extended computer use.

As someone who also has a 3D PC (only the red/blue glasses version though; if I had the money to spend on a 120Hz Monitor & 3D glasses, I would) and a 3DS, I find 3D awesome! It does add a lot to immersion and helps when judging distances. I don't understand why people complain.

3D will always just be an add on, because doing stuff like playing games in 3d can put alot of strain on the eyes, as you have to really concentrate. Being the owner of a 3DS, I felt really ill after an hour of super street fighter 4 in full 3d. Not saying this would be the same for everyone, but I dont necessairly have to focuse on SF4 as much as say, COD (In terms of watching the screen, I only have to watch 2 guys, whereas in an fps your constantly chcking things) but I still feel really bad.

Im against getting it for the pc. The 3d idea didnt sell the 3Ds for me, it was the actualy fact it was a new upgraded ds for once. Ill probably get fed up of the 3dness about a few days after playing each new game.

I think 3D is great. Once they have the (glassesless) technology down in a few years (or months at this rate), 3D gaming will be the norm. Comparing 3D to Motion Controls is simply being ignorant. 3D isn't coming to change how we play games, it's coming to make them exponentially more immersive and real while letting us play with a controller. I really don't think it is going to be gimmicky in the way motion controls are or the way 3D movies even are simply because of the cost. I think it's a smart decision to get on board early and support it. I would have a 3D monitor if I could've justified the cost, but I don't have a PS3 or 3D capable PC. The next generation of consoles is going to be 3D capable, guaranteed. In a few years, 3D will be the norm just as HD is the norm now.

See, this is what I was thinking, and the biggest motivating factoring in getting it. I personally wouldn't compare 3D, I think its more like HD was back when, I just heard the 3D to motion controls elsewhere, and most people see it as a waste of time, or just plain a bad idea. I feel like you do, I feel like it will eventually be the norm, even more so when glasses aren't needed.
