So, I built me a PC. a quick run down of the spec
Graphics card: 580GTX
Processor: AMD Phenom X6 110T
RAM: 8gigs (Hyperion)
OS: Windows 7 (64bit)
Monitor: ASUS 3D CG236H 23" LCD (came with a free 3D vision bundle.)
The games I'm basing this off of are: Guild Wars, Metro 2033, and Killing Floor.
Now, if you think those games are random, its not entirely true. Though limited in my selection(due to money, this computer isn't cheap). I picked those three for specific reasons. Guild wars for its heavy use of UI and the fact its not 3D ready. I picked Killing Floor because its online and high tension and not 3D ready. I picked Metro 2033 for heavy on hardware use and 3D ready.
This part is where I want to shoot down some misconception. 3D computing is not 3D TV or Movies. Its almost completely backwards compatible, take guild wars, which came in 2005, I can run it in 3D almost seamlessly. Its not extremely annoying, and if you can get used to the glasses, it does make games much more immersive, or at least it does for me.
I would also like to note, I do not wear glasses. I do not get headache from 3D, nor do my eyes dry out. So according to internet, I'm extremely lucky.
Now, on to Guild Wars. Despite not being 3D ready, it seems to work extremely well in 3D. Yet, its not perfect, because of its heavy use of UI, when dealing with dropped items and the Profession letters above people heads can be headache inducing, and will split into two identical things, so I was forced to play with with low Depth, which means the 3D is less profound. Because all of the UI isn't incorporated into the 3D, the text box, compass, inventory, etc. all seem to float over the screen. Its cool, but it makes it easy to lose focus on the game. Despite all this, I will continue to play it in 3D, because its that good. The parts that are 3D, and since I don't get headaches from 3D(lucky, I know) I find it to be extremely enjoyable, and I would recommend it to others.
Now, on to the Killing Floor. Again, despite being not 3D ready, if I wasn't specifically told, I wouldn't know. whilst its high tension, I never felt the 3D holding me back, and a couple times, I think it helped me aim. I never got to use a sniper scope, so that 3D bug could be present, but I can't confirm or unconfirm it. I will say this, when spectating the grind house film thingie that the Killing Floor has is.. really weird. Its not incorporated with the 3D(not sure they even could if they wanted to), so it pops of the screen much like the UI in Guild Wars, though not as bad. Hardly noticeable, but worth mentioning.
Finally, Metro 2033. One thing I noticed right off the bat, if you have Dx11 DOF enabled, the 3D won't work. Don't know why, it just won't. Odd thing is, when Dx11 DOF is enabled, the game looks like shit. So, its not a complaint, just something worth noting. Being 3D ready, its noticeable. Extremely immersive, and the only game in my library with which I can set the depth to maximum without double vision or ghosting. One of the most memorable things is the fact that you when you have the Gas Mask on, it really feels like you have a piece of curved glass in your screen. I guess my biggest complaint is not really the games felt, but just a issue with 3D in general. Because I use shutter glasses, and Metro 2033 is naturally extremely dark. Seeing off in the distance can be troublesome. Turning up the brightness didn't help that much. All in all, it was the best 3D performer and I would say its a must have for people with a 3D PC. (its also a really good game as well.)
So, all in all, I'm glad I choose to bravely dive into 3D, I'll be using a lot, and probably with every game I buy. I hope more games take a little extra time to make there games 3D friendly, but if they don't it probably won't matter. I say, if you have the money and are willing, do it. You won't be disappointed.
