Hiya escapists.

Now, I'm as sceptical to the real value of 3D gaming as the next guy, but it just dawned on me while playing Forza 3:

Couldn't racing games really benefit from 3D compability?

I mean, not only would it vastly improve the immersion and feeling of speed, but it would probably make timing the corners a lot easier and more realistic.

So I guess I have come one step closer to accepting 3D as something more than a gimmick.

Discuss.

Theoretically, any 3D game could benefit from 3D compatibility
How would a most games benefit from 3D in other ways than just looking cool?

In a racing game, 3D would be beneficial to the gameplay, but I fail to see how it could do that to, for example, a shooter or a fighting game.

I do agree that framerates are problematic though.

As for budgets, I at least think Gran Turismo, Forza motorsport and maybe Need For Speed could realistically be able to handle it.

Looking cool is a benefit. And anyway, most fighting games that place on an illusory 3D plane, so I don't really count them as 'fully' 3D. As for shooters, depth is helpful for judging distance for shots and so on, along with immersion.
Yes, looking cool is a benefit; but: It is trivial compared to the benefit a racing game could take from 3D.

Judging the distance to the enemy you are trying to hit is practically useless in shooters. The only weapon that would be more realistic to use would be the grenade launcher, unless they begin implicating bullet trajectory for regular weapons as well. And even then it would only really affect the really long distance shots.
