I would hope it didnt include the "gun of 5+ zombie killing" type of thing with most online games. Fighting should be about skill rather then who bought the highest level of armour/weopons/skills.

Also im another one for a Zombie game based more around survival then mass zombie killing, people should be fragile and use thier brains for once.

hell no, zombies work in Sandbox (Dead Rising), Shooter (Resident Evil, Left 4 Dead), and Strategy (Zombie Dawn) format, but they could never hold their own in a 3D MMO, mainly because zombies are underpowered weaklings and only work en masse.

The closest thing I can say would come to that would be a Dead Rising-esque console game where you can play co-operatively in an open world environment. Wait, they already have that, it's called DEAD RISING 2!

EDIT: Besides, it would need to have a hack-n-slash format or something that allows for AWESOME depictions of blood-splattering goodness, realistic impact detection, and a helluva good engine to run on. So... it could never work as an MMO, the system requirements for something that large (and make it good) would be gargantuan to say the least.

Hell, I'd play it if it was 2D & looked like it was made in 1998.

I'd prefur it to be a story-driven fantasy RPG MMO, personally.

Since it'd most likely turn into a WoW clone except with zombies, I wouldn't play it. It'd have to be like a traditional FPS except with some RPG concepts. Also, things like towns would defeat the concept of a zombie apocalypse; that is, if there were towns, why would anyone ever leave them? The point of a zombie apocalypse is survival, nothing more.

And if a game was made with surviving being the main goal, it'd be hard to make it fun. Once you got in fortress or something you'd be unkillable, and what's the point of playing after that? It just seems like if someone made another WoW clone, zombies could be replaced with any other monster and it would be the same game.
That's simple and can be summed up with the following word:

Supplies.

Every fortress under siege has a need for these things. Food, water, ammunition, medicine, fuel for vehicles, et cetera. The players would be required to go out and forage for the items necessary for survival. Like someone else said each "city" could be a "server" unto itself that the players could travel between. Sort of like zoning in EverQuest. You guys are also forgetting the vastness of cities.

New York City alone, for example, has 8,274,527 people within the confines of its city limits and the city itself is massive. Even if a thousand players were in a city that large, there would still be well over eight hundred zombies per player, not to mention more of the undead would constantly be filtering in, attracted by the noise and activity.

It could feasibly work. It would just take some outside the box thinking on the part of any potential developers.

I was thinking about this the other day. Blend elements of Stalker, give the players a huge city with some rural areas, make it so that supplies occasionaly spawn, and ensure that you can travel across the city in a variety of ways. Over roofs, laying down makeshift platforms and along rivers in a canal boat for example. It would be hard to get right but awesome if done

Yeah, that would be fantastic. I wonder how the game would work leveling up a character though. What would there be to level? Reload speed? Movement speed? An interesting idea, and I would definately try it out if there was one.

See, they're doing something very similar to this exact thing at deadfrontier.com .

It's not 3-D, no, but it's zombie, MMO, and actually a good time-waster. Stats, weapon management, item decay, zombie hordes, barricades, scavenging for whatever you can find, boss monsters in the solo version, pvp, and missions to do.... very nice start imo.

Well WoW has zombies, i guess you're looking for more of an mmofps?

Maybe it could take some inspiration from Fallout. Have feral zombies as generic enemies, and then more civilised ones (in the same way that vampires are) that players can control.

The humans and civ zombies would be opposing factions, but both are basically killing the ferals, and each other :p

It would work well if guns were very scarce and not to be relied on. Im talking if you make it through a really rough spot you might find a 9mm with half a clip in it. then you should be thrown into a situation were your almost forced to use it. i would settle for nothing less than harsh realism in a game like this. there would be no winning. you will die, its just a matter of how long you can survive.

edit: realistically if a zombie Apocalypse did happen it wouldnt take more than ten years for it to end assuming that the zombies will rot. however who knows what would happen if one was frozen.

Hey guys, instead of just making a WoW clone with different graphics, why don't we use our imaginations? There was a similar thread about a Max Brooks-style zombie game a little while back in which I outlined an idea for a persistent world zombie FPS.

Instead of MMO character progression you just survive. There's no forced reason to kill zombies, you do it for fun or to survive. You scavenge for food, ammo and fuel in the ruins of civilisation lest you become weak, defenceless and vulnerable in the desolate wastelands of an infected world. Other players may align with you, looking for strength through numbers, but there's nothing stopping them from shooting you in the back over some rations when the going gets tough, or kneecapping you to slow the horde whilst he makes his getaway.

There would be less emphasis on quests, with the world encouraging the player to make their own way and their own stories, but there could be plenty of opportunity to follow persistent NPC characters on their journey through the wasteland.

My most controversial idea was a one life idea. You die, your character dies, you lose your stuff and you restart (with the same name) back with all the other beginners, your only advantage your knowledge. This would make all your decisions and actions actually MEAN something. Leave someone to die, their character will actually die. They won't respawn in 5 mins, laughing about it. You'll be careful about who you trust, you won't wander into that dark, gloomy house until you've got a flashlight and someone to watch your back - the game would MEAN something, and the longer you survived the more it would mean to you.

Before you dismiss that idea, think about how compulsive that gameplay could get. Persistent awards would be available, perhaps unlocking new starting perks so that on the next playthrough you have an advantage. The game rewards both persistent gamers and casual gamers, as whilst casual gamers can drop in and out without worrying about being at a huge disadvantage to veteran players or needing to devote days to enjoy the content, playing for longer means you go to new places, find new gear and make more of an impact on the game world.

Player built structures would add more depth to social interactions, encouraging the establishment of clans or families or gangs working together to survive and progress towards a mythical safe-zone on the other side of the country.

Lets think of something new, something different to the mass of WoW clones out there, something to shake up the established MMO structure in a real way.

Yes. Pretty much only this. This is the only game I'd want to play.

and we would get building mod tools so we could form our own makeshift safe areas, but wed have to find and transfer the supplies
cause the form of huge supply convoys
and a huge amount of teamwork
AND NO SKILL POINT DISTRIBUTION! (no damage whores)
