A bit of backstory:
My fiancee wanted to get into gaming with me for years but thanks to the simple fact that she hadn't played video games with any degree of seriousness in decades it simply never worked out. Our skill levels and goals were so vastly different that there was no quality bonding or fun just poorly concealed frustration (from both ends).
This year, for christmas, I decided to try a different tack. The last time she played regularly, the Super Nintendo was new. Thanks to some new releases on the 3DS and the extensive catalog of DS games, I ended up getting her a 3DS bundle that included Mario and Luigi Dream Team and picked her up a copy of Zelda A Link Between Worlds. To our respective delights, she has thus far really enjoyed her time with the system and those games in particular. This naturally lead to a conversation about playing games together. To that end, I turn to you people for advice on games. There are a few considerations:
1) 3D, ideally, will not be integral to the experience. She doesn't care for it and I simply have to turn it off entirely. The viewing experience regardless of setting is reminiscent of the time that I got really drunk and ended up with a concussion and my brain/eyes quickly decide that the only solution is a splitting migraine.
2) Cooperative is preferable adversarial for any action style game. There are exceptions that I'd consider such as Mario Kart.
3) The consensus thus far seems to be that our mutual favorite genre is RPG. I tend to prefer them on the basis of having an interesting "system of systems" (D&D based cRPGs tend to meet this) and/or on the basis of story. She often likes the basic character progression and loot mechanics often present (She enjoyed Diablo 3 for example).
4) Other genres are certainly possible with the caveat that she continually has problems with games where the character moves in three dimensions. Any game that requires movement in 3d space simply cannot be one that also requires fast and precise reactions
As an aside, I was hoping for an extensive collection of old NES and SNES games on the e-shop but it looks like Nintendo doesn't want my money for that one. We are open to any game the 3DS will play.
