3DS Max Photo Shop Texturing Help Required

Essentially I am texturing my own model of the SSV Normandy http://shadow-whisperer.deviantart.com/#/d308ihu , while I have the base metal plate bump and diffuse maps down I now need to add the random red, black, and text decals. It would be all fine except I ran into a problem I did not forsee. I attempted to use the blend material option to blend an opaque metal tiling texture with a flat diffuse of the decals with a transparent background. The problem is the blending works and the decals appear flawlessly during the render but a white background is automatically applied to the decal map aftering saving in photoshop desaturating the base texture map.

Question is how do I save an image in photoshop with an invisible background so only the coloured decals remain and no white background added thus allowing a flawless blend of two textures in 3DS Max? Or should I just use an alpha map to cover up the white?
