Yeah, nintendo just acted like these congressmen that want to turn internet into TV like subscription of websites.
I agree with you, but I think I understand why Nintendo did this: This was meant to be used by kids. Adults and adolescents already have enough ways to communicate with each other and don't need a 3DS for that purpose. I think that this service was meant to be used as an alternative kid-only environment. However, I don't see how Nintendo didn't predict this happening. It's like Nintendo lives in its own little world.
Kids use internet too. the point still stands. If they meant that this service should only be used by kids, they should only sell it to kids. they didnt enfoce that, so obviuosly grown ups used it as well. last news about this being shut down had quite a few grown ups complaining about not being able to use it anymore, without any evil intentions.
Nintendo seems to think that they somehow can make people do only what they want thme to do on thier machines and think thats how it should be because the world will collapse if somone uses internet on WiiU for porn or something! Baiscally they are big bad babysitter who seems to be more fitting in the 18th century than now.
They do have fanatic fanbase and enough cash to sit on their ass for 100 years even if they release nothing new, so their not going away any time soon.

It is incredibly naive to think that it is literally only two people abusing the swapnotes spotpass feature for pedophile tendencies. These were just the people caught doing it.

Chances are, an even larger number of people were doing similar things with this feature all over the world. And since pedophiles tend to get away with crap like this for a couple of years before getting caught, it wouldn't surprise me if this was starting to become the all new method to get at minors with these people.
Can you please quantify the number of "pedofiles" we need to reach in order to shut down internet and explain why is this number enough to ban internet for people who were not abusing it instead of actually trying to catch the ones breaking the law?

There are pedos in Japan? 13 is considered legal, I thought they would be all over that.
technically a pedofile is somone who is sexually attracted to people who are not sexually matured. Biologically humans sexually mature at ages of 9-13 (though there are exceptions, but they are relatively rare). So such law would have barely any effect on pedofiles. A man having sex with 14 year old girl is not a pedofile despite what media wants you to call him. Technical term is underage sex, because its under the legal age, but if japan really has 13 as conceptual age (i dont know, so ill trust you on this), that wouldnt be fitting. He woudl be pedofile only in the rare cases where the girl is not sexually mature yet. Of course this works too if you swap genders. However boys do tend to get exually mature earlier on average.

Whaaat? I once built Saurumon tower out of gold blocks in minecraft. a person who did not recognize it looking at it from a distance said i built a giant golden penis. i guess if i had done it in Lego MMO i would ahve been banned. Sigh.

On the other hand, I thought things like the 3DS had some ability like the Kinect to detect then censor or block nude photos and the like.
The Kinect can do that?
Oh Yes, there are in fact a few notable videos on G4 where they had an actual pornstar strip in order to test the system to unfortunately notable success.
Is this the video you're thinking of? http://www.tgdaily.com/games-and-entertainment-features/52625-kinect-doesn%E2%80%99t-censor-naked-female-porn-stars

I haven't watched the video (due to being at work) but the text says it doesn't censor nudity.

I was mostly interested because automatic censoring like that is a really hard image-processing problem, so it seems a little strange that a) Microsoft would bother with it and b) this wouldn't be better known.
Yes that is the video and I am honestly stunned that my memory is that bad.
Don't worry. Happens to all of us. ;)

Many parents choose to use a web filtering service to prevent the kids from using sites which allow them to communicate with others.

How many pedophiles is required before they have to take down a feature?

Really?

Well perhaps if you were Sony and Microsoft, you would probably let quite a few pedophiles get away with using your applications for indecent exposure to minors. Perhaps even turn a bit of a blind eye to it. Usually at that point though, media sources get a hold of it and now you have to justify yourself to a group of people that you had "no idea" that this was happening and find a solution quickly. Meanwhile Faux News and friends are talking about how your brand product was used as a device for pedophiles.

However if you are Nintendo. That's entire image is built on being for kids, at the first whiff and evidence of something like this going on, you would promptly remove the feature. That way when media does get wind of it, Nintendo can already say they blocked out the application in question and parents can be safe knowing that Nintendo hounds hard on these types of things.

Nintendo has the power to shut down the internet? Who knew? It's not like the internet isn't a public domain or anything, and something like Swapnotes is a feataure only available to 3DS that Nintendo has full control over.

But yes. Let's ask this.
On a handheld that's often marketed to kids and parents why hasn't Nintendo put down some rules.
For instance Nintendo can only shut down a specific application when a total of 300 guilty as charged pedophiles have been caught using this program.
Until that quota has been reached- sorry kids. You nuggets just got to put up with "Justin4funs" unruly cock picture for a few more years or so until Nintendo gets the memo that enough pedos have been convicted using this feature.

Sorry parents' Nothing short of locking down their internet is going to stop your kid from getting nudes from a 40 year old.

Yep. That's clearly the most reasonable way to run a family oriented company.

Pedos? On our child marketed products? psssh. That can wait a bit.
Not a big issue or anything.

I like how most of the people here are saying Nintendo is acting foolish, for terminating a feature they probably could care less about. If the service is being used for creepy things, and not for what it was originally meant for, Nintendo has every right to discontinue the service. Especially if they feel like these kinds of occurrences can hurt the overall brand image.

So if you did enjoy Swap Note, then that sucks, but most people here probably never either cared to try it, or are hearing about it for the first time.

The only way to efficiently enfoce removal of communication would be to either stand behind them all the time or unplug internet.
Web filtering services, even ignoring that 99% of the time they either dont work or give so many false positives they aren worth using, are bad and these parents should feel bad.

Also it seems you did misquote there a bit, posting part of my post as yours. happens, i do mess up the tags myself sometimes, just letting you know in case youd like to edit that and fix it.

The point you were arguing is that because there were 2 (possibly more) paedofiles using a service, it was the right decision to shut down the service. So then, obviuosly you think a service should be shut down for everyone if few people abuse it, thus i asked the question in order to show how silly such argument is, or at least get your take on it.
I would rather try to catch people who misuse the feature than to ban the feature. you know, like h ow we try to fine people who do car accidents instead of banning cars outright.

Now, you do raise a fair point that miinformation, stupid media and bad reactions could potentially in our very much broken world cause this to be easier way out, since people seem to just take it when their features are removed anyway it seems.

Once again you show great skill at missing the point and twisting my argument to something i never said.

Or, alternatively, we could actually go and treat these pedos as lawbreakers that they are, without shutting down features and thus making actual fair users suffer because X number of pedos misused it.
If we were to shut things down whenever there is a chance a child may see penis (because, you know, its not like they ever saw themselves naked right?), then we would have to sort of shut down the whole world. Thats inquisition times level of thinking right there.

Knives are used to kill people. lets ban knives. Cars get into accidents. Lets ban cars. because who cares about all the legal users, two pedofiles have managed to send their penis pictures to kids, we must pruge the world of this evil that is naked human body!

I hardly doubt people are suffering for the loss of one aspect of Spotpasses features.

No. There are a lot of pedophiles in this world. Many of which have yet to be caught doing their illegal activities. An even greater chance that they are utilizing Swapnotes' Spotpass feature as well.

You cannot just say, "Let those pedos be put to jail and keep the feature" because if they don't do anything, pedophiles will continue to use the feature and eventually parents will start asking Nintendo why the hell they haven't done anything about keeping them off the program.
Them saying the rest of the demographic isn't using them in that matter is far from a good answer, when you have a number of angry parents, and possibly parents whose kids were affected by this are also demanding them to take action. In fact, it could probably make it worse and potentially lower sales because parents will refuse to buy their kids a 3DS due to nothing being done about this default feature.

The fact that this is going over your head is confusing.

That loss of one feature of was the only reason to use SwapNote to begin with. Plenty of people posted in the thread about it loosing internet support that they were using it and now they cant.
Existence of pedophiles does is not caused, nor be controlled, but Spotpass feature. Their existence is irrelevant to this feature. Your argument is akin to arguing that tere are a lot of murderers in the world. they use knives to kill people sometimes, so its ok if we ban knives instead of catching the murderers.

Just like pedofiles continued to use churches, mass gatherings, telephones, newspapers, and a lot of other things pedofiles continue to use. That however is no reason to ban these features. You may as well be banning everything then.
And those parents would have been idiots, because it is not nintendos responsibility to be police. Nintendo has to provide a service, parents have to teach thier kids to use it responsibly, and police have to catch lawbreakers. If we want to put all 3 on the backs of nintendo and blame them for not doing what they shouldnt be responsible for doing to begin with then we have noone else but ourselves to blame.
These parents should demand POLICE to take action, not Nintendo.

Of course, since most parents in this world seems to be pants-on-retarded this would effectively hurt sales and thats why Nintendo is doing it, but it shouldnt be doing it. Such action should in fact be the thign that lowers Nintendo sales had the costumers had basic common sense.
