So I have pondering for a while now whether or not to pick up a 3DS.

It seems to have a good lineup of games already:
Zelda Ocarina of Time 3D
Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater 3D
Loads of Mario Games
Mariokart 7
Street Fighter
Resident Evil
Pokemon Mystery Dungeon 3D

And the inevitable new Pokemon game at some point.

So I ask you, would you say it's worth it?

Anyone who has one, what's it like?

Any upcoming games that look great?

I have one I think it's ok. There are some good exclusive games like Kingdom Hearts Dream Drop Distance, the Final Fantasy Theatrythm game, kid Icarus, and Resident Evil Revelations but don't get it for the remakes like Zelda of MGS unless you haven't played those games. The 3ds online store doesn't really have a lot right now and the 3D itself is a lot of fun for ten minutes but is really too annoying to keep your head at the right distance especially when you have to look away from the screen a lot like when you're texting someone or eating while playing. The hardware itself feels nicer and more solid than a DS but does feel surprisingly outdated especially when you have to buy the second analog stick and then it's clunky and actually I haven't found a game that really requires it. It's funny but I find the AR cards that come with the system and certain games to be the most entertaining. If you don't know what those are they're cards you lay down on a table and aim your 3ds camera at and then a 3D image appears and you get to play a simple but fun game with it. I like it because it's the only time the 3ds feels interactive, you have to slighty move to dodge and use the touch screen it can be fun. Unfortunately several titles in Japan are not planned to be released overseas, Monster Hunter 3G Tri and the new Project Diva game are on wish list. Oh and 3ds is region specific so you can't just order those games from Japan.

Ok looking up at what I wrote I probably rambled a lot but I'm not going to bother editing it. I tried to tell everything I know and like/dislike about the 3ds. Overall it's fun but buy it for the exclusives. Hope this helps!

I'm happy with mine. I'd reccomend looking into Fire Emblem: Awakening, a pretty deep strategy RPG that's going to be released in North America sometime in the first half of next year. You get an assortment of units with names and faces, each of whom has access to a certain number of classes which get abilities upon reaching a certain level. They can switch between these classes to gain sets of abilities that can compliment their strengths or bridge their weaknesses. For example, you can change your Knight character, who's slow on foot but very powerful into a Thief to gain abilities like Movement + 1 and Speed Boost, essentially making him like any other character. Your units can also team up and gain stat bonuses fighting together, which make them friendlier with each other, granting further bonuses and occasionally changing the course of the narrative. But watch out, because if a unit dies they're gone forever - unless you're a pansy who wants to play the new casual mode.

EDIT: I also want to shout-out for Shin Megami Tensei IV, there's not much to go by right now(one trailer, a new one tommorow) and I doubt if it'll be all that appealing to people who aren't already fans at this stage, but I'm giddy as a school girl for it: http://www.siliconera.com/2012/09/13/shin-megami-tensei-iv-second-trailer-coming-next-week/

It definitely has much more good exclusives than the Vita, and is very cheap compared to it. You also don't have to get crappy propietery anything, everything you need (except for a game of course) comes with the system.

I have one, and I must say it's served me well. Resident Evil is the best RE since number 4, Super Mario 3D Land is an f'ing amazing platformer that isn't just a rehash like NSMB2 and Mario Kart 7 is still the same, good ol' Mario Kart. There are a few eShop games that are must buys:

.Pullblox
.Mighty Switch Force
.VVVVVV
.Mutant Mudds
.3D Classics: Kid Icarus

There are loads of good games on the 3DS, and with stuff like Monter Hunter 4, Paper Mario 4, Luigi's Mansion 2, Proffesor Layton and the Mask of Miracle and the Adventure Time game coming soon it's definitely worth it.

BTW, I would get an XL, it costs a bit more but the bigger screen, longer battery life and MUCH better design more than make up for it.

If you like DS games and 3D functionality then yes, otherwise no.

Also the XL is a heavy old beast, only consider it if you got big muscly hands or a pint-sized girlfriend to lean it on.

HOLY BUMNUGGETS! A NEW SHIN MEGAMI TENSEI?!....

BRB, changing mah jizzed pants...

In all seriousness and on topic: Yes, the 3DS is quite nifty by now. It has a couple of really good games. Kid Icarus is amazing with an incredible online-multiplayer mode and an exciting single player campaign. Kingdom Hearts 3D is a fast-paced action hacky-slashy game with hours and hours of fun (although the story is pretty much unpenetrable if you aren't into KH already). Mario Kart 7 is good. Really good. Ocarina of time still holds up amazingly and Resident Evil: revelations is delightfully panicky and claustrophobic.

There are quite few other decent games worth buying: Tales of the abyss, MGS3, New Super Mario Bros 2, Mario Tennis, Final Fantasy Theatrhythm, Art Academy (if interested in this), Rhythm Thief and some others.

With the eShop, there are two gems shining: Pullblox, a hilariously adorable puzzlegame and most importantly: Dillon's Rolling Western, a new IP from Nintendo and a Tower defense type of game (though that doesn't really do it any justice)

tl;dr there are by now a lot of reasons to get 3DS: quite a few fun games and more coming up. I'd recommend going for the XL version. I have the smaller one and I can honestly say the 3D on the larger screen is just THAT much better. It really is worth the few dollars extra and I'll upgrade once I can afford it.

Where's Starfox 3ds on that list?

Also Pokemon Mystery Dungeon 3DS looks badass.

Totally worth it

Have it, love it.

I would not recommend Street Fighter though. It's OK, but nothing special.

It also has Tales of The Abyss and Kingdom Hearts which are probably my favourite games for it.

I am looking forward to the upcoming Paper Mario myself. I'd say it's worth it, but you have to decide for yourself when you look over the games that you want and the games that are on it.

I honestly don't think that there will be a new Pokemon handheld game for the 3DS unless they decide to stop making DS games.o

I'm considering getting a 3DS so I can start playing my DS games again (Mega Man Zero Collection and Contra 4 are AWESOME, but pretty much unplayable without trigger buttons, and the ones on my DS crapped out on me long ago.) But then again, I've heard the 3DS shares the same crappy trigger button problem as the plain ol' DS.

Shinobi looks like a pretty sweet game, too.

Even though your post has already been answered I will provide some information. It is a JRPG and it got random encounters, but the battle system is in real time where you can issue commands using the touch screen or the battle menu for other commands. It's a port of a PS2 game, but the PS2 game was not released in Europe (I don't know where you are from). It is quite good and it provides a real challenge.

I like rpg's with real time menu battles and it's been a really long time since I've played one. Not surprised it's a port like half the games on 3ds are and most people don't have time to replay games because new games keep coming out and life is generally busy. Still better than having no titles. If I see Tales of the Abyss drop in price soon I will get it but I think I might wait for Code of Princess. There's also a new Castlevania coming out so I guess 3ds really has a bright future!
