Ex-Tory Leader Attacks Games

Iain Duncan Smith, a prominent member of the Conservative party, has attacked videogames this week.

Former leader of the UK Conservative Party Iain Duncan Smith has lashed out at videogames, saying that they are devastating to a young person's development. In an interview with the Times [http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/politics/article6998806.ece] where he spoke about the breakdown of British society, he said: "We are driving children to lose their childhood, and some video games are incredibly violent, like Grand Theft Auto. They are meant to be 18 but nobody cares what it says on the label."

To be fair to Mr. Duncan Smith, gaming was not the only thing that he said was wrong with British society, and cited 24 hour drinking and single parent families as other major problems, but to attack games over all other types of media, and to single out Grand Theft Auto when much more violent games exist suggests that his comments are not coming from a particularly well informed place.

What is more worrying however, is that Mr. Duncan Smith is very likely to be a part of the next UK government, and while it seems unlikely that games will be at the top of his list of 'problems', the next few years might be an interesting time for British gamers.

Right there.

The problem isn't games. It's the distribution of games. And stupid parents who buy them these games.

Right, he attacks SINGLE PARENTS AS WELL AS GAMERS?

Fuck him, nothing wrong with single parents. -Personal raegggg-

I really hate this country, if I can I'll try to move out, but really, it seems everyone over the game playing age (if there is one) attacks video games as the next media Satan, I guess in 10 or 20 yaers things might start to really calm, but it'd hate to wait that long before we stop getting attacked.

So games are destroying our childhoood? I was under the impression that playing a video game, which all agree is targeted to and for children, would allow me to relive or even prolong my childhood. Weird...

I completely agree. I dont think anything he said was particularly out of line. I also don't see him citing "Grand Theft Auto" as being evidence of him being misinformed, its pretty much the most popular game that is inappropriate so it stands to reason that it makes for the most widely understood example. I'm pretty sure the grand theft auto series has outsold say, Madworld, so while it may not be as violent per se, its still a more recognizable example.

But hey, spin your stories how ever you want man. I mean the more of a knee jerk reaction you can get out of the readers the more comments this thread will get, and the more comments the more noticeable it becomes. I totally get it.

To be fair to the UK, this place isn't that bad, I mean it's better than Atkinsonland Australia, at least when it comes to videogames.

OH NO! MICHEAL ATKINSON MUST BE QUARANTINED NOW! WITH FLAMER THROWERS IF NECESSARY!*ahem* now that I'm done with that, it isn't a surprise that people do that kind of stuff over new forms of entertainment, its happened to every form of media besides literature, all you need to do is just keep a straight face and ignore the nay sayers, there is NO turning back, too much revenue and too many jobs

Why're they always picking on GTA? There are far more violent games out there and always have been. There are also far more disturbing contexts for that violence in different games, so that argument is out. Don't get me wrong, I hate these ignorant politicians trying to censor an evolving and increasingly influential artform, but I can't get my head around the unashamed ignorance towards the thing they so persistantly criticise.

Grand Theft Auto violent??? HA and another more emphatic HA. Compared to other games GTA looks like something Disney would produce to make themselves look "edgy and cool to the young people." Just more adults in government thinking they know what best for everybody

As a Canadian, I'm currently obligated to at least tolerate them.

Seriously, what's is wrong with single parents? I mean, the video game thing is just another straw in the haystack, but I really hate it when people attack certain family structures. It's like saying gay people can't raise kids. Asshole. And for the record, GTA has yet to have an affect on my life in any way other than entertain me for a few hours at a time.

It's true that a bit too many people, namely parents, really don't care about what the rating label says and have no problem with buying their kids M rated games. To be fair, this is one of the more level headed criticisms against games, compared to others that have been made.

This is spreading, first Australia and now England will have a potentially anti-videogame politician, hopefully England has something simmilar to the good ol' first amendmant, which basically says its illegal to ban anything.
