Fallout MMOG Could Enter Beta in 2012

Interplay has signed a definitive agreement with Masthead Studios to continue development of its post-apocalyptic MMOG, codenamed Project: V13, planning to reach the public beta phase by 2012.

Despite the legal battle swirling between Interplay and Bethesda on the rights to the IP of the Fallout universe, Interplay is continuing the development of its post-apocalyptic MMOG. Depending on how the judge rules, the MMOG may bear the Fallout name when it is released. Project: V13 has been in development at Interplay since 2007 by some of the designers who worked on the original Fallout back in 1997. Masthead Studios joined the production team in 2009, and will bring its experience creating the sci-fi MMOG, Earthrise, to bear on Project: V13.

"Masthead's technology is impressive and perfect for our Project: V13. Its team is passionate to bring our vision and game play to the market," said Herve Caen, CEO of Interplay. "This MMOG will have many unique features that we will disclose before launch of the public Beta in 2012."

The based on the Elder Scrolls IP [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/97415-Interplay-v-Bethesda-Court-Transcript-Revealed]. Does this announcement mean to show the judge that Interplay is more committed to bringing a Fallout MMOG to the market than Bethesda is?

It sure couldn't hurt.

Anyone got a quote from Bethesda about this? Maybe along the lines of "Not if we have anything to do with it".

Maybe Bethesda were hoping to do with the Fallout MMO what they did with Fallout 3: Reskin a pre-existing Elder Scrolls and call it new.

CANNOT WAIT!!!! This is the only other MMO i'll ever put any time into, ever. Original fallout devs definitely have me psyched.

Development started in 2007 and it'll continue until at least 2012? The game is likely going to show its age, and do so quite badly...

I see a huge chance for epic win in this project but I'm willing to bet this is going to turn into the Fallout version of Duke Nuken Forever.

"in development" is a very vague term, and could just mean there was an approved proposal on someone's desk.

Nah, most MMO's development stages last just a couple years shorter of this. This one, however, has been hit with a lot of roadblocks. I'm willing to bet they've just now started hard coding the game itself, and finally passed the concept and design phase.

Hmm... I would be more interested in this..
except..
1. the feeling of loneliness will inevitably be destroyed by the chat box being filled up with duel and party join requests.
2. They haven't given any info on subscription fees. I wish more MMOs would take on the Guild Wars model.

I think Post-Apocalyptia would be the perfect setting for a MMO.
I look forward to seeing if they finish it.

You mean the "Makes you really bitterly wish you hadn't just wasted money on this shite" approach?

I hope I latch onto it more than I have other MMO's in the past. Which is not at all.

And I hope they respect the canon.

THE CANON MUST BE RESPECTED!!
Or we will fire you out of a cannon!!

It is kind of hard to be too much of a canon-stickler when the IP in question is Fallout, since the beloved originals were themselves prone to pop-culture jokes and breaking the 4th wall at times, but so help me I will see the continuity intact or nerd rage will be upon us!

I was talking about a subscription fee model, not game design.

I hope it keeps faithful and it dosnt ruin it all...

Lookign forward to more news!

This. The power of Fallout is being alone. Imagine Fallout 3 with 50 other people running in fighting with you....no....I will happily try this game, but expect it to be not quite right.
