Now I know that I'll get quite a bit of flak for this but I believe that Starcraft is a near carbon copy of Warhammer 40k. Just take a look.

Terrans and Space Marines
Tyranids and Zerg
Eldar and Protoss
Yeah, I know that this has been brought up a lot but it really bothers me, and yes I am a Warhammer fanboy but I respect both parties and this is a neutral arguement in the way I'm presenting it.

SC is a completely different game.

With an extremely similar, near-carbon copy, but much more poorly developed, lore.

Blizzard writers have always been atrocious. It's their mastery of Skinner's box that sells their RPGs, and it's their balance that sells their RTSs. Not their writing.

Well, it isnt new. IIRC the starcraft team started working on a warhammer game before they split (for XYZ reason). Now even if they kinda look alike on the surface, they are both very much different both in lore and gameplay.

I love both. Warhammer 40k is a rich setting ( i use a ultramarine army, pretty solid) and the tabletop game is FUN. Starcraft is fun too and i like the storyline.

Well it depends, are you comparing Starcraft to the tabletop game or to the "video" games. Because from a video game perspective Starcraft was first to appear.

I think the internet is well aware of this connection and has been for quite some time.

On a random note I think the Ultramarines are a little too over-used, not that they don't look cool or anything, don't get me wrong, it's just that they should use the Dark Angels or Imperial Fists, Space Wolves, Soul Drinkers, etc. Just to give a little more diversity instead of using one chapter of hundreds.

Doesn't really matter. I still like Starcraft. The thing that makes 40K interesting is the NECRONS.

Nothing new here. This observation was made years ago... back when starcraft was initially released actually.

Many a conspiracy over this.

Starcraft is the reason GW high-ups are still slamming their heads into the wall. As mentioned before, SC was supposed to be a 40k game but GW got scared and pulled the plug at the last moment. Blizzard changed enough to avoid copyright issues, released it anyway, and ended up with possibly the most popular RTS franchise there is.
I never really saw the Eldar = Protoss connection though. Protoss are way tougher than flimsy space elves.

Starcraft started as a 40k game, then Games Workshop canned the project. Blizzard didn't want to ditch their work so they slightly modified the assets and came up with a new lore for it, and then we got StarCraft.

Edit: Also, I hate you and your Ultrasmurfs. Black Templars 4 lyfe.

I think Starcraft was originally a Warhammer game which got canned and repurposed. Too bad for the 40k guys.
This

Starcraft started as a warhammer 40k game.

As for Starcraft vs Warhammer 40k today, well one actually strives to have a balanced multiplayer and competitive play *cough*terran's OP *cough* while warhammer 40k rts like Dawn of war are as far from having any kind of balance.

Fun fact! The Tyranids looked reptilian until after SC came out. They didn't get insecticoid until sometime in the 2000s. They both ripped off Heinlein anyway.

I fail to see why this is an issue. Sci-fi and Fantasy both use pretty much the same set pieces. It's not like there's much difference between the concept of the Space Marine and the Stormtrooper for example.

Fact is, Starcraft took the idea of tabletop games and turned it into a much more user-friendly and cheaper concept, and it took off.

The thing is... the Warhammer universe is betterrr (my opinion of course.)

On topic: Starcraft was originally meant to be WH 40K, like Warcraft was practically Warhammer fantasy.

I think Protoss are more like the Tau but otherwise your spot on.
There is alot of similarity, because of reasons mentioned by others in the thread.
Its also the same reason why Warhammer and warcraft are so similair.
