PS3 Officially the Heaviest Console Ever
"Huge like Xbox" is a thing of the past: The original PS3 has been officially named the most massive videogame console ever released.
Compared to Nintendo's portable little GameCube and Sony's reasonably-sized PS2, Microsoft's massive original Xbox (and its massive original controllers) became the butt of many jokes last generation, like this one for Gundam fans [http://img146.imageshack.us/i/xboxdrop.jpg/]. But now these jokes may have good reason to come to an end: The Xbox is no longer the biggest bear in the market.
Famitsu Weekly has officially named the PS3 - that is, the original PS3 that launched in 2006 - as the heaviest videogame console ever released, clocking in at slightly over 11 lbs (5 kg). This makes the original Xbox seem relatively tiny, weighing in at a mere 8.6 lbs. However, the Xbox is still in second place ahead of the Xbox 360 (7.9 lbs) and the new, lighter PS3 Slim (7.05 lbs).
The lightest console ever made, on the other hand, was Nintendo's Game Boy Micro, which checked in at a mere 2.82 ounces (80 grams). This means, of course, that it would take 62.4 GB Micros to equal the weight of just a single release-day PS3. Talk about throwing your weight around!
So the next time you drop your PS3 while taking it off a shelf to review White Knight Chronicles, remember that you could have just dropped 11 pounds on your feet, so you should be thankful (even if doing so broke the machine).
Alas, it seems that Famitsu Weekly has ignored my prototype console, the PlayStation Lead. Maybe it's for the best.
