Netflix Arrives on the Wii

Nintendo [http://www.netflix.com/] have announced that the Netflix streaming video service is now available to owners of the Nintendo Wii.

Streaming to the console will be provided at no extra cost to Wii owners who have a broadband connection and an $8.99 monthly Netflix membership. An "instant streaming disc" which must be inserted into the Wii console in order to launch the service is also required and is available from Netflix at no charge. Unlike the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, however, the technical limitations of the Wii mean it won't be able to display movies in hi-def.

"Launching Netflix on the Wii home console marks a significant advance in the evolution of our service," said Netflix co-founder and CEO Reed Hastings. "Wii has created immense consumer excitement and has meaningfully altered the consumer electronics landscape. Bringing Netflix to Wii catapults us toward our goal of being ubiquitous on the connected devices most popular with consumers."

The company is rapidly approaching "mission accomplished" status in that regard: According to Netflix, the Wii "now reaches more consumers than any other device that currently supports streaming movies from Netflix." For more information or to order a Netflix streaming disc for the Wii, check out netflix.com/wii [http://www.netflix.com/wii].

I suspect that my wireless connection of 3 Mbps with a ping of 95 ms isn't gonna be enough to stream movies.

This actually seems a bit more complicated than the 360 version... I'll just stick with my Xbox and the computer for Netflix, thank you. I mean, it's a cool concept and it might get people playing their Wii more, but I would rather have it for the DS...

Actually I've had the Netflix disc for awhile, It hasn't stopped to buffer once and runs incredibly smoothly.

I got the pop-up that the discs were available for order last night. If you don't already have something NetFlix enabled hooked to your TV and own a Wii, this should be great news for you.

Welcome to the club. :)

Actually, I run my NetFlix over wireless exclusively. It's fine. There's a buffer and the only thing that I've seen interrupt the stream is interrupted service. Not much NetFlix can do about that. :)

To be honest, not being available in HD is a bit of a screwup, isn't it? It would pull a lot more people if it was very high quality if you ask me.

Not much of video on Netflix is capable of being HD anyway I don't think many people care about HD than they let on. The videos are still at least DVD quality.

1.You need Gold to have Netflix access there.
2.Microsoft still has a contract for intergrated Netflix and the disc is to get around that.

1mbit is all you need. 2-3mbit for HD content, but since that won't be available on the Wii, you're fine.

Yes, NetFlix will get right on re-engineering the Nintendo Wii from the ground up.

Am I the only one who can't see the image?

But this doesn't look that interesting, since I already have it on my PS3. Eh, my Wii's in a more convinient place, so I guess this is a nice idea.
